Title: Paul Newman Post by jon019 on Aug 6th, 2008 at 10:59pm
Hi all,
Feeling really low right now and realizing it aint getting me anywhere. So, I'm sharing something which always brings a smile to my face. My Pop and Ma used to live in Ashford, CT. Teeny, tiny town in midstate. Really beautiful. And, they had the best "dump" I've ever seen (that's another story). Anyway, Paul Newman chose it for one of his "Hole-In-The-Wall Gang" camps (if ya wondering where the name came from, see "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid"). It's for terminal or life threatened kids. Can't afford it, no problem. Canoes, horses, hiking, EXPERT medical care, whatever... On opening, Paul attended, invited the whole town too ('bout 400). Pop said, "he's really a down to earth guy", Ma said, "his eyes really are that blue". Classy guy, he greeted everyone. Then, he told 'em, "I know this is a non-profit, but please, tax me like a business". THEN, he bought the town a fire engine or aid car (I forget which). Damn, a great actor, but an even better human being. It's still there, and lots of others all across the country. I was always a fan, but this goes beyond paying it back. Hollywood, rich, famous...like Pop said, "a regular guy", just with the money to do something about what needs to be done and willing to do it. Shout out for Reggie, Luke, Butch, Hud, Paul, whatever...class will out. Regards, Jon |

It sure will Jon. Paul Newman and wife Joanne...are one of the last left in Hollywood with it. Out of all the "stars" I cannot remember ever hearing a disparaging word about him or any bad press/gossip. I'll lift a toast to you Jon , as well as to Butch, and cool-hand Luke. ;) |

That's a great story jon. Always liked those blue eyes. It's nice to hear when someone don't forget their raising. Be nice if more people would remember that.

AND, all profits from his salad dressings and such goes to charity. He's had his own brand for many years.

Paul Newman is a remarkable man, and a class act. Thanks for the story to brighten our day, Jon. :)
