If one doesn't want some people to know where one lives, why would one put their hometown on one's myspace page?

Go ahead and call me old fashioned, computer illetrate.  No prob.

All I know is that I just had this computer rebuilt adding mega gigs to both drive and rams.

My puter technogeek, when transferring my data to the new drives, had to clean off three virus worms, and 27 spyware.  Now, my original system had AVG virus protection program set to the max, and also had SpyBot set to the max.  Apparently, neither of these programs protected my system.

Many of you have posted links to MySpace, UTube, Facebook, etc and others as links.  Some I have clicked on, others I have not.

Based on what my technogeek told me and has done for me, never again will I click on any of these links.

So, if you all want to post your personal information on these websites, just know that not only are you posting private information that is now available to the entire internet world, but should your family and friends access your website, we now are vunerable to viruses and spyware.

To my Ch family, whom I love dearly, I apologize, I will not be visiting your MySpace, facebooks, nor will I be clicking on your links to UTube or the like.

Call it my loss...OK.  It's better than subjecting my computer to a virus and to the umteen zillion spyware folks.

Sandy

As for the whole world knowing my info... I have my myspace profile set to private.  Anyone that wants to view my profile has to be accepted by me, before they can view my info.

As for viruses and spybots and such, I'm not having a prob with it.  And so far so good (((knock on wood)))

Sandy you are not alone.  I for the same reasons dont click on the links posted.  I have not gotten any viruses etc but dont want them either.  Just a question, were you updating your AVG software daily or weekly or not at all.  I update my avg software daily to make sure I have all the latest virus warnings on there.  Just an idea.

There is no privacy on the social engineering sites like Facebook and MySpace. And the phishing tools available, and the methods the bot herders have for zombing MS lusers machines from sites like Youtube and liveleak. Are more than the AV companies can keep up with.
Comcast has 1.25 Million zombied machines on its network last time I checked 4 months ago. The lazy jerks won't even do a thing about it, as long as they get their money each month.
If you feel you must be on the net, with a presence. Get a domain. Only cost you about $10 a year at most. You can have it hosted for the same price or less. And even get an e-mail account to boot.
Two places I can think of right off the top of my head are godaddy.com and register4less.com. I have no affiliation with either of these companies. They just come to mind is all. Shop around.
If you need a primer (free) on how to make web pages and stuff. There is a place I found that is pretty handy for beginners called, htmlgoodies.com. Even BD could learn to write a web page in 6 hours, useing Note Pad there.
Having your own domain is a lot cooler than being lumped with all the sheeple anyway. Buncha lame assed targets. You can pick them off like grapes on the vine. Not that I would, mind you. That would just lump me in with all the ankle biters already doing it. The largest Bot herder caught was 16 years old. Aren't you glad that Hackers don't bother doing this stuff.
Off my soapbox already. Get yerself a Domain, its fun, its easy and its a lot safer.

If you don't want the whole world to know about it - don't put it on the internet. Period.

I just recently got a MySpace account and so far I'm having a lot of fun with it. If a friend of mine adds pictures of her vacation or another friend wants to anounce something, I can easily go in and look and see what everyone is up to. I've also reconnected with a friend I haven't seen since high school.

My link is at the bottom of my posts. It's set to private - but I'm happy to add my CH friends.

HERE-HERE!  Tuck.  I couldn't have said it any better than you just did.

The people I care about,  I e-mail, write a letter to,  or call,  and they e-mail or call me,  to keep in touch.  A lot safer and a hell of a lot more personal and way more fun.

Here in the Netherlands, kids don't play so much with Myspace.
The huge thing around here is Hyves.nl, which has a staggering 5 million people on it. Remember, the Netherlands are a very small country with just a 16,5 million population, so that would mean nearly one in three is on it.
Not sure about other European countries, but I do know for a fact the Belgians have Hyves as well, maybe coz they speak Dutch too.

On my account there I put a CH clip I got from Youtube just to educate people on the condition we have, and all who've seen it say it scares the bejeezers outta them. Praise the internet for this.

Anyway, if you wanna see our funny little language in the flesh and maybe have a laugh about it, here's me:

OK Kris, I'll try this one more time. Your privacy isn't. Yes I know several ways around it.  But I wouldn't, its a matter of ethics. You don't have to post your info to the web. You hooked your PC up to it for all the network to see. And all the scrip kiddies to read and take over. You gave it up when you joined a social engineering site. You weren't very safe before. But you had security through obscurity. You no longer have that.
Your privacy settings mean nothing to a script kiddy ankle biter bot herder with a piece warez and 15 seconds on his hands. To frame it in terms from your part of the world. You would be a drive by shooting.
Please read my post about getting a domain. Then take a look at Artonio7 (Tony's) and jonny's websites. Tony is a very talented man and has a very nice website. You can even download a CH calender there to track your attacks. Jonny's isn't bad. But he doesn't know much about computers, and still has problems with finding the power switch. ;).
If I haven't made my point about your security. Fine, it is your machine, and your data.

I recently took 27 trojans off one of my computers, after I opened the games console. This is an HP machine, and anyone who has an HP that is less than 3 years old has this HP games console. I hardly ever open it up, so when I did last week, it did an auto-update, HP updates the games available, and upgrades existing games and installs new ones. I played one game until the trial period was up. I then clicked on another game to see what it was like, and got a warning from AVAST (my free anti-virus program) that there was a trojan in it, while it was loading. Before I could stop it, it opened, and there it was... a Neptunia trojan (which just came out last month btw). I quarantined it to the "Virus Chest" and did a boot scan. I had AVAST scan every single file in every folder on my machine. The first time, it found 17 trojans, all of them were from the games console, inside games. All of them were downloaded by HP, yes Hewlett Packard. I put them in the virus chest. I then did a little investigating.

WildTangent is the games distributor for many of these games for HP, although HP does the installation and upgrades. I found some games were wildtangent, and some were from HP Media center.

I then did another boot scan right away. There were 10 more trojans, most of them the Win32 with various versions. 7 of them were in my "D" drive, which is the back up for my system, and they were contained in the media games center. The other ones had migrated to other files.

These all came from an update to my computer from HP's website. They weren't there before, as I haven't used this machine in awhile, and had it off and not connected. Plus, I ran a boot scan when I brought it back up, and found nothing. Now, I have several files that are corrupted that I've been deleting and running more scans to see what comes up next.

I sent an email to HP support about this, and they never responded, although they did want me to take a customer care questionnaire.

Thing is, this machine is networked to the other machines in the house, and only one other one runs XP. That laptop didn't have any problems at all. The other machines are either 64 bit systems, or they are running Linux, so they didn't pick up the trojans. I'm just amazed that HP is installing updates, not only to the games, but to the computer itself, and with them, installing virii and trojans.

That is neither ethical, nor practicing due diligence. Think a letter to "The Register" is in order. Think they may like to know.

Kris,
Kirk doesn't care if you have a MySpace account. The point he is trying to make is that even though you have your account set to private, it's not really private. Meaning that anyone with a little know how can get into your account, and get your info. Also, he was trying to make the point that just having the account on MySpace opens you up to whatever is on the web, even though you have your account set to private.

Just being online opens you up to a lot of things, people are constantly scanning computers, and waiting for a response from them, to break in. Ours are scanned constantly, with people trying to break in. We can see it on our screen with a program we run.

I think the point is, there is no privacy on the internet. Even if your accounts are set to private. It means something to the user, but not to the hacker.

Oh what a storm in a teacup!

Just posting here has solicited junk mail for me, using hotmail, ebay, all sorts.

I do shop online when it suits me and I'm aware of the risks involved. I'm also aware of the dangers of having your card cloned in a restaurant.

I like myspace, its fun. I know I can get screwed there but it's a chance I'm willing to take. I do however appreciate being warned of the dangers. I also run across the road at times knowing if I trip I'm going to be squished like a bug.

Not everything I do is sensible, it is however my choice and for the most part, a considered choice.

God gave us free will - its our inalienable right to use it.

My point is, we have the right to make our own choices. Whether others find them stupid or not, they are our right to make. Making them without being aware of potential dangers and weighing up the pro's and con's is foolhardy though so I appreciate the advice contained in this thread and the protection from harm that is the intention of those offering advice. This family RULES!!

Informed choice is the key.

It's why we don't let little kids run across the road - they have no clue what it means to be squished like a bug.

First of all. Why do I care? Well I don't like to see members of the CH family being taken for suckers. And every now and then, I'm foolish enough to say something I hope will help them. I'm sorry that my ability to communicate the principles, and protocols involved to you failed. Please find an adult to read my posts, and have them explain them to you in simple enough terms for you to understand. I'm very sorry that I failed to do so.
Second: You wouldn't be able to tell if your machine has been Zombied. Neither your A/V, nor your security suite would detect it. You're just a user, you have no way to tell if you have been compromised. As for the example of your house, and the real estate vultures. You're comparing Apples and Oranges. The one has no relationship with the other.
Third: Great, Tony is a wonderful soul. His pacemaker even runs on Linux. Which I find very........heartwarming. He is a very talented, warm person. Anyone would be delighted to be counted as one of his friends. But the fact that he is on your MySpace friends list, has nothing to do with the discussion.
Anyway thats the last I have to say on the matter. Please be well.

Sometimes I wonder what planet we all come from...that something as simple as someone stating that they have a MY Space can get members all crazy... Don't any of you know that this message board is as guilty as anyother site for adding cookies and giving ya junk... Hasn't anyone ever noticed that when you type something the page is geared towards your interests... ie... mine has a thing on the bottom about the troops.  Mine also has several ads about migraine etc.  It knows I have kids in the service.  It knows I have migraine... did you think it was a coincidence that the ads on these pages are all about your interests.  The owners get a cut (sometimes pennies but money none the less) every time someone clicks off and spends money.  That is what makes the internet go around.

I think its funny that I haven't been here for a while and come back to see the family still arguing about trivial stuff... sheesh...its the internet.  Its Big Brother whether you have privacy settings or not whether you delete or not.  Texts IM's PM's are not private either... they can be resurrected with a court order...

Ree whose going back to her corner where she should have stayed.
Be good out there and you won't have anything to worry about.

I had 4 my space accounts for about 4 years. I was the school resource officer for our community and I learned kids aren't so bright. They'd plan their stupid crimes on my space, then post pics of their rave parties, their tagging and various assorted vandalisms. Made convictions SOOO much easier! I was a skater boy on 3 of them, and perish the thought, a 15 year old girl on one. My kids helped me....a lot!  ;D ;D

A very BUTCH 15 year old girl, but a 15 year old girl nonetheless.

Did you honestly think this was ever going to change? Hasn't arguing about trivial stuff been around since, oh, I don't know, the pleistocene era?

LMAO! That is such a funny idea, a fully grown man who's supposed to be a skater boy.... two thumbs up from the Netherlands.

Maybe I should set up a Myspace account as someone else, just for laughs. I always wanted to be an obese Chinese, who has a hamster named Helmut and enjoys polka's on a windy beach.

BTW.... what are rep boxes?

Pascal.

To the left, under your screen name. Others can give you plus or minus points, and the aggregate creates an online reputation for you.

Oh that, the reputation  thingy. Sorry, just didn't understand the short version was rep, lol. It's a language thing I guess, or an age thing. I just don't get the slang you youngsters speak today!

Another dumb question? What's a payola?

You're barking up the wrong tree, Ree. You should click on the "Alert Moderator" button to the upper right. If enough people....

I'm tellin' ya, that's how you get a note to DJ quickly - click on the alert moderator button. Or you can just send him a PM. Let him know how you feel about the reputation feature. I'm not all that crazy about it myself.

Woof, woof. ;)
