Title: Please help me find info!?
Post by tessistired on Aug 7th, 2008 at 9:14pm
Hi all!

I need some help finding information on the net about migraine headaches in children...bonus if I could find info of that in special needs kids with pre-existing neuro issues.

I am almost positive that my son Josh gets migraines.. I have an appt with our fam dr for next week.  And am waiting for his neurologist to call me back...BUT...

In the meantime I want to do some research online..  I have already googled and so many different sites came up and I have gone thru some of them but didnt find much.  If anyone knows of a good site to go to please let me know.

And also please pray that he sleeps his "migraine" away tonight...he has had it all day and has always had the classic signs and symptoms of a migraine.  But I am not sure if they are any different than from adults.

So any help would be much appreciated!!

Thank you all and I love oyu all!

Tess

Tess.

Try this site.  It's in the UK but that shouldn't matter if all you're looking for right now is info.

Here's a few sites:

eMedicine is generally pretty reliable: START PRINTPAGEMultimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or RegisterEND PRINTPAGE

From the Cleveland Clinic: START PRINTPAGEMultimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or RegisterEND PRINTPAGE

This site from the American Headache Society discusses Migraine Variants in Children, which are aspects of migraine that vary from the norm: START PRINTPAGEMultimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or RegisterEND PRINTPAGE

Whilst this article is from 2003, the Cochrane Reviews is a very reliable set of medical information, and this is one brief article on migraine medication in children:  START PRINTPAGEMultimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or RegisterEND PRINTPAGE

There are a variety of more sites, depending on exactly what you are looking for.  I didn't specifically look up resources on children with special needs and pre-existing neuro conditions.  Not sure if you want to elaborate on what sort of pre-existing condition in order to get more info?  If not, that is completely fine - don't want you to feel pushed to give confidential info!

If you wait a few years, you can come see me!  I'm getting my masters to become a Pediatric Acute/Chronic Nurse Practitioner and plan to work in pediatric neurology (or perhaps neurosurgery), and specialize in headache as well as general peds neuro and rehab.  I'm a neonatal nurse, so I have a special interest in following children with special neurologic needs.  But that's neither here nor there at this point!

There is an excellent Pediatric headache center in Cincinatti, which I know is very highly recommended.

Hugz,
Carrie :)

Thank you ladies for your response and site recommendations.  They are very helpful!

Unfortunately Josh did not sleep his migraine away.  It is much woirse today.

Went to the fam dr this morn and he confirmed it a migraine and gave him midrin and finnigren for nausea(i think thats what its called).  So far no relief.

Also made an appt with his pediatric neurologist for 2 weeks from yesterday the 21st.  So hopefully no more migraines after toay and all goes well at the appt.

I was right  along side Josh crying with him because I felt so bad he was in so much pain and I couldnt comfort him.  The last time I saw him in this much pain he was 2 months old right after a brain biopsy surgery.

Oh Boy I need strength!...But Josh needs it more!!!

Thanks again

Tess

Thoughts and prayers for you and Josh.  I'm so sorry that he is going through all of this pain.  Hy heart goes out to you as well for a mother feels her child's pain right along with him.

Hugs for you and your little boy,

Jeannie
