World-champion cyclist Kristin Armstrong of Boise took an Olympic gold medal yesterday in time trials.

This is pretty exciting stuff for us, locally--I actually know Armstrong slightly--mostly just to say "hi".  (Boise's a small town.)

I'd imagine that the next time we see her here, she'll have plenty to talk about.   :)

Best,

George

Very cool.

But how does one get a gold medal in time trials?

Sounds like saying you're the smartest kid in the dummy class. :o

If that is exciting, imagine when your local boy is Michael Phelps! Lisa swam at many of the same meets until he started doing international meets. He is a week younger than her. When he was young my friend said anyone swimming this fast this young is going to burn out. Boy is she eating her words now!

Congratulations to your local lady too George!

I LOVE the Olympics! I am soo into watching Michael Phelps!
HOWEVER
The very first gold medal went to an Oregonian in the very first event , and that was in fencing. I don't know her name or nuthin..not really into fencing, but was proud, nonetheless!
I am particularly fond of that commercial(odd).which says, simply, "GO WORLD!".........I know there are blemishes and all, but, on a whole, this is a wonderful way to watch the world come together, doing their best...that said......GO WORLD,
GO CHINA, GO ATHELETES FROM ALL OVER!

But, since it is a part of my past............GOOOOO, SYNCHRONIZED SWIMMERS!!!!    I absolutely cannot wait for the 20th, when my work will be done and I can sit and savor the synchro girls....with my nose clip on for effect!

We will be attending some of the events in BC......if you EVER have a chance to attend an event-ANY EVENT.....do not hesitate! We still enjoy our pin-trading we did at the LA'88 Olympics. Gil was a liason for Pacific Bell, and so we were able to get tickets to several events. It amazed me....the smog somehow parted, the traffic settled(many companies created staggered schedules to keep the fwys from their usual gridlock).like a special magic settled over the venues..and we traded pins with so many foreigners and met some delightful people!

Anywhoo, I'm home, in front of the TV as much as I can be, coz I LOVE the Olympics!

George - It was a serious question. How does one medal in time trials?

Brew,

A time trial is when a cyclist is racing alone on a course for the best time.  It is not the same as a 'race' where every starts at the same time and tries to cross the finish line first.

Ah - I envisioned each racer going x laps, with the best time getting the pole position to start. Thanks.

George - Nevermind.
