Title: I found a good energy drink
Post by marfanoidus on Aug 14th, 2008 at 11:04am
I know this topic has popped up every so often, but hopefully this will save some of you some serious $$$.

There are powdered energy drink mixes available that have the 1000mg Taurine that people look for. I found one called Power Edge - 10 packs for about $2.50 (25 cents a drink is pretty darn cheap), and it tastes fine.

It wasn't with the other energy drinks, it was more with the powdered Gatorade, and Crystal Light products.

Hope this saves some of you some cash.

Can anyone tell me how much Taurine Red Bull has in it? I have looked everywhere and I cannot find.  I found a Rock Star which also has a 1000mg of Taurine but I cannot remember how much Caffine.  It was cheaper than RB.  Others I have found which were cheaper such as Amp had only like 300 mg of Taurine and 160 mg of Caffine.

Amp is just glorified mountain dew.

You are correct, sir. It has a bit more caffeine, but the small amount of taurine makes it, in my book, a non player in the energy drink game.

I've been drinking a new evergy/coffee drink by Starbucks.  It has 1000 mg of taurine and I'm sure is also loaded with lots of caffeine.  I prefer the vanilla flavor.  It's the same price as Monster and it is yummy!  I've found it at certian convience stores and some gas stations.  Not many places carry it.

I found an energy , an off brand but it has all the taurine and caffiene as rock star but only cost 3/1.00. I buy several cases of 24. above all it works well too.

Big Lots has been having them on sale every week or so. I have been buying them by the case. Rockstar Juiced 24 for $10. or their store brand for 3 for $2. But they taste like sweet tarts. Narsty! Rockstar Roasted Latte FTW!!!

Hi All,

I read the wiki on taurine, but I'm still unclear about what it does for CH pain, exactly.  There was mention of it reducing blood pressure, so maybe there is action on the blood vessels in a similar way as Verapamil?  Caffeine has a fairly instantaneous effect, so I'm assuming taurine does too, but is that true and what would that effect feel like if  you were to have it alone, not masked by the jolt of the caffeine.  Just curious...

Also curious, is taurine found naturally in any food?  It seems to be an enzyme synthesized by our own bodies and animals, but do we normally find taurine in our daily menus?  Meat, perhaps (since I read vegetarians have lower amounts in their system)?

So, then I wonder, does CH respond to diet in regards to high-protein (meats) vs vegetarianism?

I guess I'm rambling, but I got to wondering....

Cynthia

It's just the opposite for me, the Starbucks stuff is everywhere and I've got to hunt for the monster.  But here the monster is about .50 cheaper per can.

Well, so far (probably because I'm so tired) this is what I found... START PRINTPAGEMultimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or RegisterEND PRINTPAGE It explains meats that it comes from.

And it looks like cooking destroys the taurine content in food, too. O_o

It has been postulated that taurine is only beneficial to CH'ers when combined with caffeine, the theory being that taurine accelerates the rate of absorption of the caffeine.

Others have found success simply by taking taurine supplements.

The taurine used today is synthesized. It was first found in rotting bull carcasses, hence the name taurine.

GROSS!!!   I could have gone my whole life not knowing that!

Oh, Well... I guess I'd eat a rotting bull carcass if it got rid of a hit!

True about the price.  Went to Target last night and picked up two cans of the Starbucks stuff.....$2.58 each!!  yikes!!  I'll look for the Monster Java.

Well Jeanie you probably did not see my post on another thread about generic imitrex, but to try and shorten the story, I could not refill my imitrex and got on line and found where I could get some sumatriptan with RX.  I was in bad cycle so I ordered.  The stuff worked unbelieveably well.  Julie found it plus found out it came from India. Julie watches all these dumb TV Show (60 Minutes, Date Line and those other communist programs) and this was about the time the publicity came out about ordering drugs from Canada and those not being tested etc. and you not knowing what youwer really getting. So her comment was I was probably spraying Yak Dung up my nose. So to that end to abort my hits or rid myself of shadows I sometimes drink bull carcassess and to aid in aborting 8kip or above hits I have sprayed Yak Dung up my nose.  Only God knows what I will do next.   ;) :D ;D  Wishbone

There needs to be a "sticky" for a thread like this so people can keep up on what others are finding for affordable energy drinks in their area.

Right now I am back to Red Bull as the generic version aorund here I was using vanished, so that means my wallet is bleeding........

That's funny - all that bit about the bull carcasses and yak dung...Oh my!

At my local food store, I swear the Red Bull and Rock Star cost the same - unless one was on sale and made them look to be the same price.  I'm terrible in that to save my sanity, I try not to look at the price of the Red Bull when I buy it, so that was really the first time I paid close attention.  I'm afraid to stray from the Red Bull path because I like the taste (and it comes in that smaller can, which really works just fine for me!), and I'm afraid I won't like other kinds.

But to put it honestly, I'd never tried Red Bull before I went to England because I was afraid I wouldn't like that and didn't need all the caffeine and calories.  I had one at Helen's and it helped tremendously!  So I should be  more open-minded about the other types!

Our local store has Red Bull, Rock Star, and Monster.  What say all of you on the taste?  I actually LIKE red bull.  Haven't tried the sugar free yet, but I need to so that I cut back on the calories!

My mom did find that a 12 pack of Red Bull was the same price as buying 2 4-packs.  She bought it for me recently when we went on a family vacation.  I offered to pay her back for it, but she said not to worry.  That was nice!

I'll have to try some of these other brands, if they are, in fact, cheaper.  I also want to compare calories...  If I recall, everyone said the sugar free worked just as well, right?

PF wishes,
Carrie :)

I find that RedBull works better for me than most other drinks, or should I say it works more reliably than the others.

Car - I like either the blue or green Monster for taste. I think it is the blue. The newer bigger cans here have a cap that you can put back on so that is a plus, otherwise I do not like such large cans - another reason to stick with Red Bull. I hate to waste the stuff but I don't need nor do I want to down three servings of the stuff at once.

So it remains the same - I am bing held up by the Red Bull bandit.

Oh, I and must clarify a statement - I DO love large cans, just not large cans of energy drinks..... :D

;D

Seriously though - thanks for the info!!  Honestly, one can of red bull makes me wired enough - two cans of red bull keeps me up half the night.  So I don't need one of those giant cans of the other energy drinks!  Good to know they make a cap for the Monster!  I will have to look for the blue or green to try it out!  Thanks! :)

Theres not much I can add to this thread because I have never tried energy drinks for CH.

But, after dealing with this for 34 years (31 chronic) I can say that for no reason it got so much better for me. I have no idea why I just have had a handful of HA's in the last two years,. I have been off all the meds I have been taking for over a decade, but I still keep an arsenal of meds just in case.

Its just as if someone found the volume control for my head and turned it down.

I guess what Im trying to say is, NEVER EVER GIVE UP! [smiley=bigguns.gif]

You Statesiders obviously have a wide range of big-name energy drinks.

Over here, our choice is a little more limited, but I've still found a variety of supermarket brands which don't taste too bad.

Honestly, the taste thing becomes irrelevant when you're stumbling towards the fridge at 3am in the morning with a monster CH.

I'd happily eat rotting bull carcases, drink neat yak's blood and lick the paste off the wallpaper to get rid of the pain.

Ian

Love my Monster Loca Moca, but discovered Monster Lo-Bal with half the cals that kicks butt on my CHs.
I was chugging one at lunch tloday when I got the "eye twitch" going pretty good. Thought for sure at least a shadow would hit. An hour later the other eye started twitching but never got so much as a shadow.
Monster Energy is imported so it should be cheaper in Europe. It runs $2.49 in the grocery stores and $3.00 in the convenience stores over here.
