Well, every last one of my rose bushes has died.  There must be something in my neighborhood that is killing them.  Several of my neighbors have also lost theirs.  I lost 15 total.

I want to replace them but don't know if I should plant in the Fall or wait till Spring.  I'm also wondering if whatever killed these will still be around and kill anything new that I plant.

I wonder if there is some weird little aphid, beetle or grub that is chowing down on them.

jonny once told me that aphids can be eliminated with a 12 guage shot gun.  Gives the house a nice tectured affect as well.

I wish I had thought of this earlier.  There is a type of nematode that is in the soil and it can kill large stands of roses.  And it won't make a bit of difference what type of rose you plant, unless it is bred to be nematode resistance.

Mine aren't doing to spiffy, but we transplanted them late, so they've had it rough.  Oh well, there's always a new tea rose that I'd love to have  ;)

Jean, before they died off, what did the leaves look like? Were the flowers looking like they were kinda chewed around the edges before they opened? What did you use for mulch? Did you have aphids, or notice any other small insects on the bottoms of the leaves?

I have roses at my other house, and I came across a fungus in the mulch I used. They made it through, but were damaged and I had to cut them back as far as I dared.  My neighbor had it too. This went on for two years.

You can plant new ones by the end of this month, or very beginning of Sept. They will have time to establish before they go dormant for the winter. Keep them watered well. Before you do, you may want to take a sample of your soil and mulch to the county extension office and have them tested. If it's a problem with the soil, there's no point in replanting until the problem is fixed.

Oh, how I miss my roses... I had a small but lovely and very fragrant rose garden.

Yep, the flowers looked exactly as if they had been chewed!  Their color even faded.    I know that I had Japanese beetles but didn't see any other pests on them.  It started off last year with just one plant then this year it has spread to every one.

I figured out what is killing them...... Rose Rosette also known as Witches Broom.  I'll have to dig up every plant and the surrounding soil if I want to replant.  There is no known cure to the disease.
