I am of no value in this. I use whatever the corporation puts on my lap.

Link #2, hands down.
#1 has AMD 64 bit, which is cool if you're a gamer, but not any big deal for everything else. #2 has dual core Pentium, very nice. #3 has a Pentium M. Those are OK on power consumption, but slow. -Shawn |

You're welcome sis. Glad I could be there for you when you're in need. That's what brothers do do. Mine is a Dell Latitude D610, my Treo is a 755P, I use a tracker ball, my shorts are white, shirt size is 17 - 34/35, pants 34x31, and progressive bifocals. Favorite color is sky blue pink. Love ya, Mark |

Pick the gray one, the color should go with anything.

#2 sounds like a good piece of hardware, but read the warranty well before buying it. I would ask if you could "downgrade" to windows XP instead of Vista.
Best of luck to you! Ray |

I am not a fan of "refurbished" laptops. Desktops maybe, laptops not so much.......

Those built-in web cams can be a problem... recently there was a guy arrested who had installed a program that would secretly take pictures on his ex-girlfriend's computer and send them to his email account. Bad boy. There are virii out there that can detect your camera and do the same thing. Best to tape over it and 'open' it when you want to use it. Sadly, the same virii also can turn on your mic without you knowing it, making your computer the perfect bugging device that sends audio to the bad guys without you ever knowing it. It's a scary world these days. I'm not saying this happens every day, just that it happens.

Oh, sorry Andrew, it's not in the initial list of 3 I posted, instead it's the one that Bill found for me. It's a Gateway M-Series :) FU- now you got me paranoid! :( Guess I'll have to find a piece of window cling, cut it and stick it on there... |

I would have picked No. 1 for other reasons. But it looks like you got a perfectly servicable machine anyway. Make sure you turn off your Mic and Webcam in your hardware Manager, unless you're using them. To keep the creeps out. After all you have Microsoft and no security.

Thanks Kirk. I disabled the webcam in the Device Manager but I don't know what to look for to disable the mic?

Mel,
Did you get a set of restore disc's with your new Gateway? Their biggest problem in the past has been no back up disc came with their systems and if your computer gets a virus or crashes you have to pay several hundred dollars for a set of restore disc's. For a windows based system, they are as good as any, should have gone with a Mac! They are bullet proof and come with everything you will ever need right out of the box, they never get viruses, ever! No John, I did not get a set of restore discs. I usually don't keep lots of files on my puter anyway, I am too busy burning my pictures and home movies to do so, plus I always back up my hubbys files to disc after he gets a new side job. Anyway, little late to get a Mac, besides, I cannot afford one. Thanks for everyones help! |

Sorry to burst your bubble John. But a Mac is a second class clone of the BSD Unix OS. And yes it gets Virii and Trojans. Two new ones this month. And they still haven't patched the DNS exploit. Or the Appletalk expliots. As well as the Apple Script exploit problems that have come up recently.
Remember Apple is a hardware company. Not a software company. they just took FreeBSD, stripped some stuff out to suit themselves and put the Mac GUI on the front of it. Mac users have been mesmerized by Steve Jobs and his walled lotus eating garden for years. Remember Microsoft Mel, I think you can Mute your mic using the volumn controls. There should be an icon for it on the lower right of your screen. If not, hunt it down like the dog that it is. [smiley=smokin.gif] |
