I was commenting to Helen yesterday that the Geese are already on the wing here and I had a feeling this winter was going to be a bad one.

I had already planned to stoke up on extra fire wood.  A face c. used to be $15, last year was $50.  Cheaper than many places still and WAY cheaper than oil.

I don't know, Paul. The geese around here never leave anymore. They just stay all year long and crap all over everything.

I can't wait. If it weren't for the price of heating, we could use another Blizzard Of 77. It keeps us on our frozen toes.

It's been a mild summer here, and for the last 2 weeks or so, with the exception of the last 3 days, the temps have been in the mid to upper 70's, the norm is in the mid to upper 80's. The last 2 times that happened, fall came early. I remember having to wear a jacket in the evening in early September. I think it hit 90 once this summer, very unusual.

I haven't seen any geese yet. I guess we will see. I can handle the cold, but I can do without the snow. I guess we'll see what happens.

well,, while out fishing the other day, my youngest noticed a hornets nest WAY up in a tree,, about 30 feet, that USUALLY means a rough winter. I'll have to wait to make judgement until i can examine a persimmon. My grandfather used to swear by this, and I have found its USUALLY accurate. You take the seed of a persimmon and slice it in half ,( takes a VERY sharp knife) if the inside resembles a knife, ,, its going to be dry, but cold (cold winds "cut" right through you), if it resembles a shovel, theres going to be LOTS of snow.  I have also noticed the squirrels are doing ALOT of cutting ,(shelling nuts with their teeth) and that USUALLLY means a rough winter also. Yea, Yea, I hear ya,, sounds like bullsh!t, but most of what the weathermen say is bullsh!t also!!!!!!!!  and I just gave it to you WITHOUT interupting the olympics!!!!!!       P.S. Not that any of this sh!t matters, if its warm and dry,, I'll be here in illinois, and if its cold and snowy, I'll be here in Illinois                         Tuck  

The other thing I noticed was this year there was an enormous amount of blossoms on trees.  Seed production was prolific!  

Weird thatI had a dream last night about snow.  I went out back and looked up and a storm deposited a drift that was way above the roof of the house.  Hope it wasn't an omen of the winter to come.  GULP!

Charlie, how about we agree that you can have all the snow you want as long as it it kept west of Rocheser? ::)  Yup, I like snow too as long as I don't have to drive through it every day. ;D

It has been years since we had any type of real winter. It doesn't get cold here till January. In is in the 90's here but last year at this time it was 105. Its hard to tell. I do wish we would have a cold winter, like to kill off some bugs.
But because we are planing a trip to FL the end of September it will get colder than a witches tit after labor day !

I predict a HARD winter just because my combined gas/electric bill went up $68 a MONTH!

Dunno kids. Yesterday it was 47 degrees when I got up and put on my sweater. We just don't get weather like that up here in August. 70 is more like it in the morning. Yesterday was rare in that we didn't rain. It's been soggy up here too.

I'll trust Farmers Almanac weather predictions over the local weather forecasters anyday.  The meterologists here have been making a habit of apologizing to the viewing public lately, for not only being wrong, but not even close to what they forecasted.

I say it's gonna be a cold one.  Can't tell by the geese, they never leave.

I've noticed that when I have lots of acorns to clean up in my yard, we have a colder winter.  They haven't started falling yet....we'll see.  I like a couple of months of good cold weather and snow.  I love to sled with the kids and we don't get to much.  We don't get snow like we did when I was a kid.

When I was a kid, I listened to a radio station in Cleveland, WKYC to be exact, whose weather forecasters had us believing that the Wooly Bear Catipillar could be used for predicting the severity of the coming winter.

All the kids on the block would hunt these things and report the findings back to our teachers.  It was great fun and very entertaining.  I don't remember if we proved or disproved this theory, but I know I believed it for a long time.  :D

Here's what a lot of people believed, way back when...........I wonder if they still believe this myth up North.

I had the same tale with the woolybears too as a kid.  Can't remember how it went with the stripe.  Funnyhow many of the tales actually have some merrit.  With seed production you figure with a few mild winters it gives the plant more stores to produce seeds and after a few mild winters the chances of a harsh one increase.

Noticed we are at the solar minimum for sunspots so the next few years ought to be on the cold side until solar activity returns.  If we had an extended minimum like in the later 1600's we are all in deep sheep!

Heating oil is going to be a killer for a lot of folks this winter!!!  Burn wood, stay warm! ;)

I have to giggle about this mainly due to my Grandpop's strange ways of forecasting the weather via his bunions, the cows in the fields and the leaves on the trees.

If his bunions hurt, the cows in the fields were laying down and the wind was blowing the leaves on the trees showing the back of the leaves, it was going to rain.....and he was always correct.

My previous Doberman, Jamie was my Accu-Weather Dobie.  She would start acting skittish and hyper about 24 hours before a thunder storm or snow storm.

Guess the barometric pressure gets to all living things one way or another, eh?

I am hoping for some nice big snow storms this winter since we haven't had one around this way for quite a while.

Im here to tell you around these parts... the squirrells tails are skinny as Hell... that means MILD WINTER.  Thats my story and I'm sticking to it no bad Winter for people that had a Summer that was rainy and horrendous... My son who lives in Hawaii visited and turned on the heat in my house in July... whats that tellin ya.

I love the snow and cold.  Bring it on!!  The only thing is that I dont want alot of it because then it tends to flood in the spring.  It has been a bit cooler here this month as well.  In the low 70s to mid 80's for Aug when it is usually upper 80s to upper 90's.  I will take the cooler temps over the squeltering heat any day around here.

Global warming is ice caps for the most part and it isn't necessarily reflected in temperatures elsewhere......for now.

OK, I saw some geese today. It is very early for them to be flying. Some trees are starting to change, there are always a few each year that are early, but this year, there are more.

And Pat, our utility company just reported that rates are going up by 20 to 30 %. Great. At least gas is still cheaper than electricity in these parts.

And it's turned cool here. Humid, but cool. That makes the A/C at work seem much cooler, so I wear my fleece jacket.

Time to get out the cold weather clothes.  :-/

Man, I can't wait to move to a more temperate climate. I hate winter.
