Title: Job update
Post by fubar on Aug 27th, 2008 at 11:50pm
OK, so I've been at the new job for almost 2 months now, and I figured it was time to give an update.

So, in our last episode, fubar turned down the big money at a big company (Cisco) to take a job for a lower-than-market salary at a start-up.  He foolishly believed that the risk was worth the potential reward if the start-up turned out to be the next Google. He realized that happiness was not so much in the paycheck, but in the work and the achievements, and decided to give it a try.

Since then, I have been working 10-12 hours per day, living away from my pregnant wife for 4 nights a week, and basically working my ass off.  I live in a converted garage in San Jose during the week, sleeping in a twin sized bed that is older then I am.  I eat frozen pizza if I am at home since I can't even get delivery (I don't have a real address, really).  I live directly under the path airplanes use when landing at the San Jose International Airport.  The exhaust from their engines creates a fine black dust on everything I have in the 'unit'.  My washing machine is in my kitchen (instead of a dishwasher, I guess).

Did I mention, I'm having the best time of my entire career?  I swear, this is the coolest project I have ever been honored to be part of.  I know I made the right decision, and I know that no matter how this turns out, I am doing the best work I have ever done.  I can't wait to show this off, and when we launch, I'll be able to tell all of you about it.  This will be bigger than Google, much bigger.  It will change the way you think about TV and movies.  I would never have believed this until I saw it with my own eyes, but this is truly different than anything you have seen before.

It's not very informative, but it kind of gives you a clue what we are doing.  More info will be available soon.  I promise to keep you updated.

Yes, I am excited.  I'm building things that have never been attempted, and that's the best thing I can imagine doing.  I love it when people tell me 'that's not even possible'.  It only makes me want to prove them wrong.  This is one of those things.   The good news is, they can learn.

So, with all of the excitement and long hours and hard work, CH is still with me, but it's not as bad.  For some reason, the more I keep my mind spinning with trying to solve these technological riddles, the less I have Kip-5+ attacks.  I don't know why, but I only have 1-3 per day now instead of 5-8, so that ain't bad.  And most of the time, if I get hit at work I am in a datacenter by myself, so no big deal.

So, there's the update.

More info soon

Shawn

Twins by the new year and then this baby.  Busy, busy, busy.  Great the CH is taking a back seat.   :)

Reminds me of a time back in 1968.  A friend showed me what his dad was working on.  You could actually record TV shows and watch them when you wanted.  We talked about it's usefulness, if things like videos would catch on.  It was hard to imagine.

Sounds great, Shawn!

My father told me and I tried to pass it on to my kids, find a job you LOVE, and the money will surely follow. You're love and enthusiasm come through loud and clear, praying the payoff is as rewarding at the end for you, congrats! [smiley=thumb.gif]

Let me know if the project ends up needing a Marketing/Advertising person.   ;)

Not many people get to do what they truly like. I'm more than happy for you. Not sure what it is but I know it's gonna be good.

That is so awesome Fu.  I know how you feel about really enjoying what it is that you are doing. The paycheck is not always enough.

I looked at the site and it looks very cool.

PF Wishes, I hope that you keep getting fewer and fewer hits.  Maybe all the technical stuff is confusing the Beast  ;)

What a week... This was my last official week as an employee of the startup I was working with in Boston.  So, the extra paychecks will end as of tomorrow.  BUT... I just found out today that they are paying me my vacation pay too, so it's like getting another bonus.  Sweet.  They must like me... they also let me keep my MacBook Air, and a huge Dell monitor.  And my stock.  It's like Christmas.  Maybe someday the stock will be worth something.

One year ago, I was out of work, bills crushing me to death, grief-stricken over the loss of my twins.  Now, I have the coolest job ever, twins on the way, and have been getting paid by two companies all summer, plus bonuses and vacation.

It always looks darkest before the dawn.  Sure is nice to see that sun come up, finally.

Shawn, Your last post echoed  precisely what I was thinking. I know how horrid it was, with the loss of the twins and the job....this whole thread has been soo wonderful to read. yes, it WAS dark, but now it isn't-the world is your oyster man.
Very happy to hear of your happiness. please keep us all posted!!
