Title: This is me blowing up!!!!!!
Post by BarbaraD on Sep 3rd, 2008 at 10:58am
My son just called. He's one of these people who NEVER gets upset about much of anything (kinda like his mother ;) ). But he was yelling about the EVACUEES and their ATTITUDES toward the people who are HELPING them.

Seems these people in Shreveport (and the "shelters" are FULL) are complaining that Shreveport aren't doing ENOUGH for them.

The people of Shreveport have DONATED thousands of dollars worth of clothes, sundries, food, and who knows what else. The city has DONATED thousands of dollars in SHELTERS, electricity, food, manhours, etc to see these people have shelter, food, and are out of harm's way. The people of Shreveport are bending over backwards to HELP them and they WANT MORE!!!

One example -- The city set up an old Sam's building as a shelter. They put up "temporary" showers and bathrooms outside (there weren't facilities inside the building). Now keep in mind - they only had a few days to do this... But this is UNACCEPTABLE according to the evacuees and they want something better.

I'm sorry and maybe I'm missing something here, but there was a hurricaine that hit the coast (the last one that hit KILLED a lot of people). These people were evacuated to SAVE their lives and towns accepted them with open arms and have done everything in their power to HELP them cope until they can return to their homes to start rebuilding what was lost. Nobody OWES them anything - everyone is doing what they're doing because it's the RIGHT thing to do in any emergency, but everyone is doing what they can. Were it me I'd be GRATEFUL to be alive and for any help I got.

I'm sure these are the minority that are doing the loudest complaining, and most are glad to be alive and happy for what people are doing to help them, but it just irks me to think that people can be so ungrateful in a time like this.

My son said he had some things to take to one of the shelters but after he saw that he's gonna wait till the leave and give it to someone in Shreveport who needs it. He used some language that I sure didn't teach him (well not most of it anyhow) to express his opinion of what he thought about the whole situation.

Ok, off soapbox for now....

Hugs BD

Jeez.
I would be happy enough with just a slab of concrete to lay on as long as it wasnt raining.
It's called an emergency.

Tell them to call FEMA ,and see what they get. Some from Katrina feel they need help still. Sueing they are. For a free ride from others. How grateful is that?
Have you checked your BP Barb? Please remain calm dear.
Try to remember stupid is as stupid does. My wife says I have to forgive these people. That's kinda tough with my hammer in my hand.
all the best

Thank them for their input and tell them you're sure something better lies just over the next crest. Simple as that.

Tell them to walk 5 miles up the road and check into the Shut Up Motel

Unfortunatly this does not surpise me.  There are way too many morons walking this planet.  Maybe they can ride it out next time and stay put

This sounds a lot like the frustrations of Robert Heinlien too; that it's useless to expect people's gratitude for much of anything.

Ya know, I haven't heard squat from the midwest flood and tornado victims.  Seems they just deal with it an get on with business.  Must be a local thing.

You're right Bob (can't believe I actually said that) - most people DO take care of it and just go on.

Last year when we had the "backlash" of a tornado here, one of our elderly neighbor's trees fell in her backyard (missed her house thank goodness). My son went down there with a chainsaw and cut the darn thing up and another neighbor loaded it up and took it home for firewood. We burned the rest. The neighbor baked pies for us. Everyone came out ahead.

I'll help anyone in trouble, but when they start DEMANDING that's when I pull back. My Mama always said, "The Good Lord helps them what helps themselves!"

Hey boob!  What's up!?  I think it is more than a "local" or "regional" thing.  Look at them, then look at the Iowans that went through the flooding and tell me what you see?

Hell Barb,
We got you beat, hands down!  Here's a story about the shelter in Bastrop LA.

This one statement really stands out and proves the ignorance of the refugees, " According to Julukee, some people came with absolutely nothing, and he does not feel the shelter is doing enough to meet everyone’s personal needs".

Now, these people have ample time to get/pack what they needed to being with the.  There is NO excuse for them not to have had/packed everything they needed.

Ever since Friday, I've watched Jimbo come in from work, absolutely exhausted (last night he got in at 1:00 am, last Saturday, he left the house at 7:00 am and didn't get back home until 4:30 am Sunday morning).  I know the people that work with Jimbo are doing their dead level best to provide what is *needed* (he's over the Special needs shelter here and has helped with the Critical Needs Shelter~Special needs are not necessarily severe medical problems where Critical needs is).  I'm flippin' tired of these people whining and bitching about what is *not* provided for them.  Why can't they be thankful that they are (1) out of harms way, (2)in a building with 4 walls, a roof AND beds and (3)being fed on a regular basis.

IMHO, let the bastids ride it out the next time and see how they like it.  Oh wait, that happened with Katrina didn't it?

Don't let me come face to face with a bitching refugee, or y'all might have to help bail me out of jail.

Sigh.

I agree and saw it first hand in a recent crisis my family and I were in.  We were extremely grateful (distressed of course) but many others sharing similar situations were greedy and very ungrateful.

I saw the same attitudes and commentary of those in shelters shown on the news.  It really is a disgrace.  I know I'm in a caring profession, but nothing makes me more mad than working my arse off and having people just sit around and do nothing and expect and DEMAND to get everything handed to them.  People should be grateful for their lives and for the shelter, food, emergency care, and security being provided for them.  It is an emergency situation - this isn't the time to be expecting the Ritz.  If that's what you expect, then save your own hard-earned dollars (?!) and get a hotel room next time.

Sheesh...

Didn't you hear The One in his speech?  YOU are your brother's keeper.  It's your responsibility.  You are a heartless, mean-spirited waste of a human if you don't sacrifice your personal happiness for the greater good.

This only goes to show the extreme failure of the current administration to take enough from everybody and give it to the 'less fortunate'.  After all, it's not their fault they left home without the things they needed.  And, in order to be prepared for emergencies like this, they need to take more *now* so we can all be better keepers of our brothers.

If you have a pot to piss in, shame on you.  Somebody who isn't doing anything to provide for themselves needs it, and you worked for it.  You got the satisfaction of working for it, but that unfortunate soul over there didn't even get *that*, so cough it up.

Maybe they would be of better attitude if they spent a week on the roof waiting for the coast guard to rescue them. When I was in the army, we always had indoor plumbing in our tents, and a hot tub in the truck. This total lack of hospitality is outrageous.

I would just tell them that we could arrange for them to stay at the Hanoi Hilton if they don’t like their current accommodations!

After reading this thread, my blood pressure is through the roof!!  Once entitled, always entitled.......the thought of providing for themselves or even doing something, anything, to change/improve the situation they find themselves in never crossed their minds.

and it gets better.  I was listening to the Moon Griffon show this morning on talk radio and one lady called in to tell about the one woman, who had a baby, and was bitchin' and moaning about not having formula or diapers.  Now, I don't know about you, but if I had a kid, I would make sure that I got out with what I needed to take care of them.

Poor, poor refugees, so badly mistreated (oh, did I mention that Rapides parish was still 90 % in the dark?).  At least they are in air conditioned buildings and getting 3 squares a day.  Hell, they are having to truck in food and water to St. Martin Parish!  I saw a lot of flooding on the way down here.  Lord only knows what will happen if we get any more rain.  Did I mention that we got 8 1/2 inches of rain in a little over 3 days?  And that was on top of the 6 or more inches that we got in the beginning of last week!

I'm in Natchez tonight and unfortunately for me, it seems like I'm on the side ot the hotel with the refugees (would they please just stfu or at least turn down the volume?).

For your reading pleasure.

I like the following comments left on a forum that I belong to.

"Replying to:

at least someone somewhere is thinking right. come to DFW and bring your crackheads back home. on last nights news (DFW local) they were interviewing some LA refugees asking when they were going to return, got to respect the honesty here, "when we gets our last free meal"  the next one interviewed stated they werent leaving till they " get my check, dont know if its fema, red cross, or a wal mart gas card but im not leaving without it"hard to garner much sympathy from the national stage when this is the public face of the problems in louisiana with the storm.

I say tell 'em everybody not on a bus by Thursday is going to be left.  Anyone in a shelter is going to be kickout.  Anyone on the streets that can't show appropriate ID is going to Angola.  We'll mail you a check down there."

Remember folks, your tax dollars and your conributions to the Red Cross are subsidizing this farce.

Sad isn't it?

My kinfolks in Houma are returning today. From the reports they've gotten, three of their houses just got roof damage. The forth got a tree in the middle of it. Guess Randy's gonna be rebuilding his house, but he'll do it. At least he's not sitting at DFW waiting on his "check"  :). The last I heard he was planning to get his mom's house fixed up and move in with her until he could get his repaired. So there are some folks who still 'help' themselves...   they just don't put them on TV.

Amen to that Barb; you hit the nail on the head

The media wants SHIT stories from dumb ass people that don't give a crap about anyone but themselves and what freebies they can get

Meanwhile, let us remember, WE/I are not all like that in LA

My daughter came home with all too familiar stories from the Red Cross shelter where she spent a week volunteering. With hardly any sleep; she watched over children whose mothers were too lazy to care; heard complaints from evacuees that honey buns were no kind of breakfast to provide; even found one prostitute wanting to do her business while in the shelter.

Needless to say; her dad is furious and refuses for her to go back to "volunteer".

What have we become?

just know that there is still goodness here from most of our people down in south Louisiana called cajun country; Lafourche parish; family loving and helping one another whether it's blood related or just friends and neighbors needing a hand and expecting nothing more

thanks,

EDNA

Edna, you got it right.  A lot of the folk in southern LA are decent hard working family people who help others, but the vast majority of the evacuees complaining are the same ones who complained about the "guvment" and FEMA not doing enough for them after Katrina.  I remember pulling trailers down there for them to live in (free, might I add), and it wasn't enough.  That is the reason I quit pulling to LA and only went to MS and AL where all I got was appreciation from all I encountered.  Instead of being berated by people for not taking them directly to THEIR places I was THANKED by people for doing what I was doing even though they had lost everything they owned other than what they had carried out in their cars when they left.  Not trying to be political, but there is a fundamental difference in outlook between those who are working to improve themselves, and thosw who are sitting around waiting for someone else to take care of and think for them.

IMHO
Jerry
