Title: Do you ever get bored with your job? Post by jimmers on Sep 9th, 2008 at 4:18pm
I'm not saying I'm not busy, but I sometimes wish I could do something else here. I've been doing this kind of work for 22 years and sometimes I think I can do it in my sleep. I can look at a blueprint and pretty much figure it out within a couple of hundred dollars on 50K-100K bids.
My boss who is 25 years old thinks I'm a hero because I can do this, but I have pretty much seen it all in this business. I have inquired about some other positions within the company and have had some good feedback. The thing is, I don't want to leave my boss hanging out to dry if I was to move on to another dept. because he is trying desperately to build this department. I also don't want to get stuck in the position that I am in because I am good at it, and have them not let me move on. I have seen this happen before to some people that I know. My Wife was one of them. I think I would like to move on to the dept. that builds cell towers and be a project manager. I have done some of this work before and it is interesting to me. I'm not sure why I'm fretting about this but maybe some of by brothers and sisters here can shed some light on how i am feeling. Thanks for listening. P.S. I must be bored, I'm typing this at work! ;) Jimmers |

Sure I do. In fact, it seems as though I get the "7-year itch" as far as my job goes. Since I started here in 1988, I got a new job with a new department in 1995 and 2002.
Even though it can get a little ho-hum at times, I still really like it as it consistently offers new challenges from time to time, and it gives me an opportunity to exercise the grey matter. As jobs go, it's a pretty darned good one. There's a reason they call it work - if it was all fun and games, they'd call it vacation. |

you only get 1 life...go for it! As far as leaving your boss high and dry, he must be pretty good to have his position at 25 years old, so I think he will do OK. Time to think of yourself

Or maybe it's time to continue thinking about the others in your life who are dependant on you for food, shelter, clothing, medical care, etc., etc....
Kev - there are some things that are more important than ourselves. |

Don't let loyalty get in the way of career growth Jim. If the new position offers the same job stability / compensation and challenges you think you'll be successful at, by all means explore it.
I wouldn't let my current boss' need for my skills allow me to stagnate in a position I didn't like or see a future in. -Dennis- |

Bored at times - yes indeed. As in right at this very moment. It will go away.
My director boss who is 14 years my junior recently asked my career asperations. Told him I'm running hard to the finish line or retirement, not coasting but running. He asked if I was interested in the next level promotion to director. I answered with "Not anymore, I'm 54 and that bus departed about 12 years ago. I'll ride out my career as group manager and make whomever I work for look good in the process". He just looked at me like I'd lost my promotional mind. No way I'd want to work those 60 - 70 hour weeks anymore. |

I do get a little bored sometimes, but then I think about how cool it is to be able to be so flexible with my time.
I am the auditor, so I am referred to as Mr Nemhauser, Sir. Thats a plus. I spend a lot of time alone in my car, which is a nice luxury ride. I can think of worse places to spend a lot of time. I meet several different people every day. Never meet the same person more than twice per year. That's a plus. I can go to the store and buy 5 of the exact same shirt and wear it every day, cause I never see the same people. Thats kind of cool. I cant think of a cooler situation. Unless you are talking about the Hawaiian Tropic Bikini Team. ;) B$ |

Brew.........nothing wrong with thinking of yourself sometimes. When was the last time you did something for yourself. I'm sure it was fairly recent but again there is nothing wrong with that. Jim seems like he needs a little more out of his career and the man should do it if it makes him happy.
Now if he has 20 kids and is taking a job with no benefits and less pay, now thats just stupid. Sounds like a smart guying who is weighing the pros and cons to me. peace out |

No but I get bored with yours! ;)
Seriously, Jim, the "too good of a soldier to be a Captain thing" happens a lot. Good side - job security bad side - lack of growth In today's economy it is a tough, tough call to mentally seperate myself from my job - it is the first step to moving on adn quite often the employer sees it before the employee and the pink slip comes. I wish I had some insight for you but career-wise I still have no idea what I want to do when I grow up and I am too chicken-shit to try to figure it out..... If you figure something out let me know would ya? |

Never, ever. I have had so many opportunities to change the world through my work, it truly keeps me excited. I helped build the Internet (connected 80 countries to it, for example), I designed and implemented AT&T Worldnet (won a big award for that one), and even got to help create some protocols that keep routing from melting down on the Internet. Now, I am going to build the next generation of television, all from almost nothing. I have so many 'impossible' things to do on my plate that it can't possibly ever get boring.
I am lucky. Sorry to brag, but I am really lucky. The funniest part is I never even graduated high school. |

I hear what you're saying, Kev. But I would never tell a guy to chuck it all to go fishin' if he couldn't afford it. Especially if there are little mouths to feed. But I can see that isn't what you were saying. Yes, you do have to do things for yourself sometimes. A happy provider is a good provider. |

Well dude, ya gotta follow your gut, man. In my line of work,(refinery), boredom is a GOOD thing. If there is excitement, that means something is getting ready to explode!!!! I recall years ago the boss of my boss speaking to me and saying something about ,"my career". I told him that I was sorry if this made him angry, but, this refinery is NOT my career. I told him there was a cute blonde, and two toe-headed teens living in my house and THAT was my career. This refinery is just the place I come to to get fun-tickets! (money!) I explained that "I take my job serious, and work to the best of my ability, but my priorities are different than yours." He liked my honesty. Now, if i was 23 and childless,,, things might be different. But I am 42, married with two teenagers. Thats where my priorities lay. Each man, or woman, must search thier soul and base their choice on THEIR OWN situation. Then live with the consequences of their actions. Good luck . I feel pretty confident that your descion will be a winner!!! Tuck

Title: Re: Do you ever get bored with your job? Post by fubar on Sep 10th, 2008 at 2:45am
You want to know irony? I can't even get decent high speed here in my cottage in San Jose (Silicon Valley). I live in a converted garage at the back of a property where I can't get my own DSL or cable, and the owner here won't trench or get it wired for me.
Jimmers, my best advice is do what makes you happy. This life ain't a dress rehearsal, and it goes by fast. If you aren't loving what you're doing, you're wasting time. For some, loving it means having just enough of a job to collect a paycheck, and that's great too. I would rather be underpaid and happy than overpaid and bored. |

I get bored with aspects of my "job." Laundry bores me, coming up with interesting meals every day bores me, dusting and vacuuming bores the teeth out of my head!
But I've gotten to watch (at very close range) my son grow into a fine young man, made Brew look good at work by having a haven to come home to after work, and now I even have time in my day to do things for myself. Overall, a little boredom is normal. Maybe you need a hobby? |

I've held quite a few occupations. I've gotten bored with every single one of them, quit and moved onto something else. Now my job being a wife & mother for the past 14 years has yet to disappoint me with boredom. I could really use a vacation once a month now! LOL
Go with your gut Jimmers. :) |

I may be other things but I am not bored with my job. Every year I get 700 students minimum, some from previous years others brand new, each a special package ready to show me something. I would never move up to administration although my husband has asked me for years why not. I am very challenged with my art classes and my little people, thank you! Oh and did I mention, summer vacations can be alot of perks?! :)
