No need to post to this, just need you folks to up the vibes for tomorrow. Mom will be having the kidney out tomorrow, the tumor is now growing outside the kidney which means a fast out.
I told her today that all of us here had her back, you know what she said word for word?...... "They have had my back every time for the last ten years" :'( I cant say im not scared, but she has a strong heart and great blood pressure....the docs say no problem, they better be right! Thanks folks! |

Jonny - I will be thinking of your mom and you as much as I can tomorrow. I, too, am having surgery tomorrow, so you'll forgive me if I don't actively keep you in mind while I'm out of it. But it will be comforting to me to know that we both did the same thing on the same day.
Give her our best. |

Title: Re: Here we go again. Post by Jonny on Sep 10th, 2008 at 7:36pm
Mom is in the recovery room as I type and will be going to her room soon. The doc said things went slow (4 1/2 hours) but very good and they got it all. He said that is was slow because he wanted to do it laprascopicly (SP?) which means he only had to make a couple small cuts instead of one big one. Mom was groggy when I saw her but she was so relieved that they were able to do it that way and so were her boys.
Now, to make 100% sure it was not cancer they have to sent it to the lab. Not sure how long that will take. Shes not in a room yet so I dont have a complete address for those that want to send cards, but I will post it when I do. Does anyone have any info on how Brew is doing?....Sure would be nice to know that he made out ok! Mom asked me to thank you all, so THANK YOU! :-* You all ROCK!!!! [smiley=headbanger.gif] |

Jonny,
So cool to hear that your Mom is doing well. Just a suggestion, if you don't mind. Mom's laparoscopy incisions are gonna smart when she tries to move around so if you have a pillow or a folded towel, she can use them to hold against the incisions when she tries to get up, move around or cough. Splinting the incisions helps to lessen the pain a bit. She will surely have some owies for a while but I hope she is feeling better A.S.A.P. |

Brew's home and as fine as he can be doped up on pain meds and sleeping.
So glad to here Edith's surgery was done laparoscopically - less recovery time than with big incisions. Give her a squeeze (gently) from us and then post that address PDQ. Hospital gift shops have the BEST get well cards! Hugs to you and yours, Jonny - and thanks for the well wishes for Brew. |

Title: Re: Here we go again. (UPDATED) Post by Brew on Sep 11th, 2008 at 6:33am
Thanks for all your kind and healing wishes, clusterville! I am on the mend and enjoying the effects of schedule 2 narcotics.
Since I'm a little loopy, I don't feel as inhibited about sharing a few more details of my procedure (you'll see why it might be just a little embarrassing). I had some large areas of skin removed from my inner, upper thighs and crotch due to the long-term effects of something called hidradenitis suppurativa - a skin disease where the apocrine glands have a genetic defect and aren't able to flow properly. They get plugged up from underneath and then become infected, turning into big, painful abscesses. It's something my grandmother suffered from, and hopefully I will now get some more long-term relief. My crotch is a big mass of gauze and staples. I'm in pain, but I'm also going to be fine. My thoughts and prayers now turn to Edith Grasselli, who I'm sure will have a longer road to recovery than I. Jonny, your mom, you, and your entire family are getting everything I've got. Take good care of her (as I know you will), and let her know that she's got all the vibes I can muster through this drug-induced haze. I love you guys. Bill |

Ok, our two "sick uns" are doing good -- and NO Chuckles Has NOT checked in. Two down One to go....
Glad everything came out ok. Now get some rest - Give 'em both a big hug (easy tho) from me (hugs always make sick folks feel better - trust me on that one). PS Jonnny Cyn's suggestion is really a good one -- the tops of "tummy control" panty hose works good too to put a little pressure there (an old nurse's trick - we used to use "girdles" but I doubt you'd find one of those these days). Hugs BD |

Title: Re: Here we go again. (UPDATED) Post by Jonny on Sep 11th, 2008 at 6:39pm
Ok, now im pissed!. I got to the hospital today and Mom was sitting in a chair out of breath, she told me that the doc had her walk down the hallway. Am I wrong to think its fucking idiodic to ask a five foot five, 270 pound, 72 year old woman to walk a hallway less than 24 hours after having a kidney out?.....Am I?
I blasted this fuck when he came back, and then he has the balls to say that Mom may be able to go home tomorrow........Lets just say they called security to escort me from the building by the time I was done with him. My older brother Anthony (the maniac of the family) is fit to be tied and will be there tomorrow to make sure that dont happen, I have feeling that I will be arrested if I show back up. >:( Mom is much better than she was in the recovery room, but no way good enough to go home that soon. Some of you asked for an address and seeing that this shit is happening, if you PM me I will send you her home address. Thank you all for caring! |
Title: Re: Here we go again. (UPDATED) Post by Mosaicwench on Sep 11th, 2008 at 7:50pm
I'm not a doctor, nor do I play one on the internet. I have no idea what the standard recovery/hospital time is for a kidney removal.
That said, and at the risk of pissing you off Jonny, I think it's a good thing that she's well enough to move around so soon after surgery. A lot of what lengthens recovery time is large incisions and secondary infections and since her incisions are of the smaller variety, it's probably good she's moving as much as she is. The longer one is inactive, the weaker one can become. I've always felt hospitals are no place to get rest. They are places to be watched for additional or unusual symptoms (usually at the expense of rest). Home is for rest. I'll bet she does well at home getting the rest she needs. But remember, I'm not a doctor and just know what I've observed, rather than learned in Med School. And yes please, PM me her home address so I can send a card. :) Deep breaths dear - she'll come through this fine. |
Title: Re: Here we go again. (UPDATED) Post by cynjeep89 on Sep 11th, 2008 at 7:55pm
Jonny,
First of all, try your best to calm down. I know it's tough to see your Mom sick and there is a lot of stress and anxiety for everyone when a family member goes through a surgery as your Mom did. Most physicians feel that the sooner a post surgical patient can get out of bed and walk, the better they will recover. When I had my appendectomy, the nurses had me out of bed the night of my surgery...less than 6 hours post-op. I am in no way comparing my little appendectomy to your Mom's nephrectomy. She surely had a far more complicated surgery than I did. Moving around post-op can help to prevent bloot clots in the legs and lungs and also helps with many other areas of the body systems. If your Mom stays in bed or stays dormant, she is at risk for complications. It's hard to see someone we love in pain but please try to stay calm. Getting upset is only going to upset your Mom and she doesn't need that right now. She needs you to be there to help her. Please try to stay calm and if we can help in any way, just give a holler, k? |
Title: Re: Here we go again. (UPDATED) Post by DonnaH_again on Sep 11th, 2008 at 8:01pm
The reason they try to get patients up so soon is to ward off blood
clots that travel to the heart, brain and lungs. It is pretty hard to get up so soon after surgery, but they really push everyone to do it. I have no idea why they would send her home so soon tho. |
Title: Re: Here we go again. (UPDATED) Post by Jonny on Sep 11th, 2008 at 8:35pm
Thanks ladies, im much calmer now after reading what you wrote.
Just hate seeing Mom being pushed like that, had no idea that it could help in any way. I will call off Anthony...LOL Thank you! :-* :-* :-* |

Title: Re: Here we go again. (UPDATED) Post by Brew on Sep 11th, 2008 at 9:40pm
Not much to update. All things considered, I'm doing okay. Counted the staples in my gooch - 44. Okay, the wench counted 'em cuz I can't see down there very well.
Folded most of a load of laundry, had Chinese for dinner (Hunan shrimp and moo shoo pork), appetite is fine, enjoyed about a 2-hour nap this afternoon. Sitting on an icepack right now watching the Brewers lose to the Phillies. Did I mention that percocet is a wonder drug? Thanks for your concern. P.S. - Jonny, I got that big kiss from you via the wench. It was a good one. :-* |

Yowza, Bres. 44 staples? Owie for sure!!!
As for the Percocet.....doc prescribed it for me after a couple of surgeries and even though the literature provided by the pharmacist stated "May cause drowsiness", I was hyped up as all heck. It's tough when your mind says, "Go, go, go" but the body can't cooperate. Glad to hear you and your "gooch" are on the mend. ;D ;D ;D Pat, you are indeed a Saint!! |
