Title: Relocation experience?
Post by Em on Sep 11th, 2008 at 2:22pm
My OH has had 2 job offers, but both involve moving to the Channel Islands (so away from home and moving the whole house).

Is there anyone out there with experience of relocating? I just wondered if anyone knows any pitfalls/tips that might make this easier for us if he decides to accept.

Thanks,
Em

Hi Em

no advice to offer on relocation, but lots of people from here in Louisiana have burn out from storms and are looking to relocate; so I think any information will be appreciated by many

good luck,

EDNA

I don't have much experience with it. We bought this house in 1963 and I'm hoping to be able to stay here until I can no longer shovel snow.

Isn't one of them closer to France than England? Yikes.

Thanks Andrew! If we go, part of the reason is for lifestyle. I love Wales, but we wouldn't be coming back here. My folks are in Canada so it's always been in the plan to move back there - and of course there's the added benefit of staying on the same continent as Helen!  ;)

Charlie - Jersey is only 14 miles from France (mummymac - correct me if I'm wrong!) and Guernsey is a little closer to the UK, but not by much.

One of the companies is so interested in OH, they are offering to interview me too and find me a job so relocation is easier for all. Wish me luck!

Edited for spelling

How long is the job in Guernsey for Em? I know we hadn't discussed a whole time frame for you eventually moving back to Canada but on opening this thread I thought it was going to be about that? (Okay I hoped!)

That's so sweet! It's all still in the plan. Originally we were thinking about moving to Canada in Oct/Nov next year, but these jobs have come up and seem like a good opportunity. They are only 2 year contracts though, so we'd head straight to Canada after that. I won't be far behind you neighbour!  ;)

I don't know how I managed to post that twice - I had actually written out a different post! I told you this bloody puter was kiboshed!

You'd better not be far behind me, I'm planning on loads of get togethers etc! What's the time frame for moving if it goes ahead as we still need to arrange a meet and greet before then HERE!!! LOL

Em, is it Jersey or Guernsey for the Job offer, it can't be Guernsey its so crappy there we have the sun set it on fire everynight.

If you here come it it will give you the chance to get rid of all the crap before you emigrate, so that will make that move easier.

Shame it couldn't have been in the  summer, we look so much better in the sun.

Hoping to meet you soon ;)

It's one offer in each actually Tanya! We just don't know what to do. He's had an offer in Bristol too, which would mean we wouldn't have to move house, but I like the idea of upping sticks. I'm a little nomadic like that.

Is Guernsey really horrible?  :-?

Congratulations to your OH, its nice to get so many job offers and be wanted.

Some people like Guernsey, I am not keen on it. Jersey beaches are better and we have more open countryside. We did spend a few days there a few years ago, never ever felt the need to go back.

The pubs used to be closed in Guernsey on a Sunday, not sure if they still are.(not that I use a pub so it don't matter)

They also do not have the Jersey Cow, Jersey Royal Potatoes or have Sir Walter Raligh build a castle there (I do not think with his own hands) aslso  as they are further away not sure they can see France.

But the very worst is they followed Cromwell all those years ago, Jersey staid loyal to the crown hence the fact that they were given a large tract of land in the USA by King Charles in the 1600's hense the name New Jersey before it was sold off to the Dutch.

But Guernsey is ok for some I guess.

Not that you're biased at all of course...  ;)

The company he's had an interview with in Jersey seem like a nicer company, so at the moment we are swaying that way. It just depends what the full package is. We find out on Monday - salary, benefits etc. We will possibly be flying out there in the next few weeks. They want to show us around Jersey so we can see what it's like.

I'll keep you updated!

Em
