Title: Irc channel?
Post by Ungweliante on Sep 18th, 2008 at 3:52pm
Hey everyone!

I use irc quite a lot, so I was thinking here if there's a dedicated irc-channel somewhere already for this stuff.

And if not, how about it? Would be nice to talk to you guys in real time too :)

- Best regards and PFDAN,
Rosa

Not sure what irc is,  but there's always our chat room here:

START PRINTPAGEMultimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or RegisterEND PRINTPAGE

or MSN messenger.

(every time I see a post of yours, I think I posted something that I forgot about, due our same avatars.  lol)

Most times when people want to chat, they'll post on the general board (here) "chat" as subject and before ya know it, you'll be yappin' away!

IRC=Internet Relay Chat. Its where we used to hang out and chat in the old days. A lot of us old geeks still do. Most users don't know how to get to the USENET though. A good thing, it is sort of like the wild west there. A noob can be pwnd in a hurry there.

...so there IS an irc channel?

I think IRC is superior to many other forms of real-time chatting. It's easy to just log in and out, stay there for a long while and also see the history of the discussion. Other good things too, like styling the chat windows, having many of them open to separate channels, so on.

Linda, I have the same effect, although you have been here far longer than me :)

I believe pwnd comes from the online gamer community when someone misspelled owned as pwned.

It also became a part of Hacker jargon, and the scriptkiddie, cracker, warez world.

In this case it means what you describe your computer is in another thread, owned by someone else.

Now that you are totally confused.....

pwned means 'owned'

'owned' goes a bit beyond just having your computer being taken over... it means having it done without any awareness on your part.  In that regard, you are 'owned' because you don't even know you're being victimized.  The hacker owns you.

I thought I just said that, LOL. I guess I'm not one to talk to users anymore.

It surprised me that you used the media's bastardization of the term Hacker. At least you didn't capitalize it.
