Well, we made it to 23 weeks.  Jen was admitted to the hospital yesterday because her cervix is 100% funneled, and the only thing holding the babies in now is her stitch (cerclage).  They have her on terbutaline to stop the contractions.

She is going to be there for the duration.  She is at the same hospital, in the same room (I think) where we lost the twins last time.  Life is full of nice little ironic surprises like that.

So, Jen isn't in a really social mood, so I wouldn't recommend calling her, but maybe a card would be nice.  It helps to know people are thinking about you. :)

Here's the address if anybody wants to send a card.  If you do send a card, please don't mention the loss of our first set of twins.  Positive thoughts and energy... that's what works.

  Aw Shawn...I feel so badly for you.   But then again this just may be Gods way of making the both of you be taken care of.  If you're in the hospital, you can't be running around crazy, working and then trying to get back to the hospital to see the wife.  Now you're in the same place when you can sneak down the hall and give your wife a kiss....go back to your room and have a scrumptious meal prepared by someone else...read the paper...watch a movie...and just give up the idea of always having to do everything.  This is probably YOUR chance to rest.

Happenstance is a pretty odd thing. When my mother in law was hospitalized, my brother in law vand his wife came down to see her. She was quite ill at the time, and it seemed important they see her. Mom got a double room, but it was all hers till my brother in law and his wife arrived. As they were visiting with Mom, a new patient was brought in. A very ill woman, herself, we didn't think much of it.........till my siter in law looked at some flowers that had arrived. It was my sister in law's mother! They had been estranged for many years, but after all this time and distance, these 2 women ended up in the very same hospital room. Eventually, both women died within hours of each other....but that didn't happen till my sister in law made AMENDS WITH HER OWN MOM.......Chance, or divine interference?

I'm constantly reminded miracles come in some very unique packages..........

Now, babies.........please hang on!

Shawn......you must feel helpless.  I'm so sorry to hear of this latest development.  You've just got to turn it all over to God and get some rest.  This is a terribly hard time for you both and we all wish so that we could help in some way.

Get well, get as much rest as possible and give your wife lots of hugs.  You'll get them back at the same time.

They finally let me go last night, but I have to go back in to the cardiologist this morning for some stress tests.  Yesterday, while I was in Jen's room, my heart just started doing the funky chicken.  I've felt that before, like I was getting an extra beat in the middle of the normal beats.  Usually it doesn't hurt, but this built up to where my heart simply wasn't pumping blood to my brain any more, and I started to pass out.  I got a really cool picture of the strange heart rhythm from the nurse, I'll try to post it later.

So, we are back to having just Jen there.  They have tried to treat her with terbutaline, which made her sick, then they gave her phenergan (I have no idea if I spell those right) which is supposed to help nausea, but it made her violently ill.  Thankfully, now she is calm and not as sick.  My little adventure yesterday didn't help much.

Once again, thanks for everything.

Today we got to sit and talk with one of the NICU doctors.  Everyday we get closer to viability, but for now we get to discuss the 'what if' plans with the docs.  I thought I was nervous *before*.  Good grief.

It's pretty easy to spot the abnormal beats.  That squirrelly section is  a picture of one missed heart beat. When I went in, that was happening for about 80% of my heart beats.  I have more tests scheduled for Thursday.  Currently I get about 2-3 of those per minute.  Time to cut down on the caffeine I guess.

I'm sure your Doctors are all over this but... Are you taking Verapamil or Kudzu or any other type of calcium channel blocker?  This stuff can result in heart rythm problems.

Also beware the Red Bull...if you use that.  I'm glad that you're getting good care.  My dad actually had a very similar rhythm and his managed to resolve spontaneously somehow, so I hope that yours does too!  Lord knows you don't need to be going through more issues!  My dad's actually happened during a time of extreme stress, but I believe resolved without medication.  He is on heart medications, but not for rhythm - but for blood pressure and so on.

As far as the babies - you know I've been praying for you nonstop for years, and I escalate those prayers even higher every time I read one of your updates.  So the NICU talk - I know the talk.  It can be very scary.  And it's obviously even more scary when you've got TWO babies!  They are officially viable by dates, as I'm sure they told you - but multiple births mean they are technically younger than they really are.  Although not all twins turn out that way by any means!!

And those problems they probably listed?  Just have to take it one day at a time.  If they do come early and are admitted to the NICU as micropreemie twins, then the ONLY thing you can do is take it one day at a time.  I can tell you that there are times when it all seems awful, times when it all seems great, then times when it all seems awful again, then a good day, then 2 bad days, then 5 good days, a week of bad days, and 2 weeks of good days.  Or sometimes an hour of good, hour of bad, hour of good and so on.  What is ultimately most important is the big picture.  To have them move in a forward direction OVERALL.  Not every baby hits every problem, but they still have to forewarn you of all the possibilities.

I know I'm not telling you anything they didn't already tell you, but you just can't let their talk totally blow your mind off.  Obviously you have choices, depending on when the babies come and how things go at delivery.  How you proceed throughout ANY of these things (birth, initial minutes/hours/days/weeks/months) and the choices you make are your choices - and you must trust that you are always making the best decision you can, with the information you have AT THAT TIME.

Let the doctors and nurses worry about everything - and you and Jen just continue to hope and pray for the best, and we will all do the same with you.  It really does help the babies when the parents try to remain calm (sometimes an impossible request) and are present and interacting - if they do end up in the NICU at an early gestation.  All of this is a major "WHAT IF".

The docs don't want to scare you, but they have to give you all your options and the full picture of what you may be getting into.  It isn't fair to your or Jen not to present you with all the possibilities, even though it will make you feel horrible and scare the living daylights out of you.  It allows you to make informed decisions and to decide what direction you want things to go.  Once the babies are born, all you can do is hold on to every single positive thing that happens and hang tight during the tough times.

This is the best I can do from my end to add to the preparation speech without going to much more into it.  (And I know you didn't ask for my NICU input, but just always know you have a trusted NICU nurse friend and CH buddy in me!!)  But you and Jen are very strong - and you have all of us behind you every step of the way, no matter what.

I am praying BIG TIME for the babies to just hold tight in there each day a little longer!!  Have they talked about giving steroids before delivery to help with lung maturity if they do start to come?

I cannot begin to tell you how many miracles I have seen out of the NICU.  NOTHING is predictable.  Each day they stay inside mom is another day for them to get stronger and for their lungs and vital organs to develop just a little bit more.

OK... 24 weeks as of today.  That's GREAT!   :)

Jen is hanging in there, and she was very pleased to get some flowers and 2 cards already from the gang (Thanks Jackie and Guiseppe!).  The cards were very thoughtful, and in fact she cried a bit.  She is going a bit stir crazy though, and you would think she'd enjoy company, right?  Nope.  She got a roommate yesterday and the chick is driving her insane.... Jen even asked the doc if she could go home because she thought she'd be less stressed out, but he basically laughed at her.

She is having a cervix scan every two days, and tonight the doc says she is holding steady, exactly where she was when she came in one week ago.  That's good news.

Every single day matters now, because the boys are right on the edge of being viable.  If we can make it to 28 weeks, we should be golden, but I'm thankful for every day we get between now and then.  For all I know, Jen will be there for the next 12 weeks.

Today I was pumped full of radioactive juice and did a stress test on the treadmill.  My resting heart rate was 54, but 15 minutes on the treadmill got me cranked up to 150.  They took some cool pictures of my very healthy heart and sent me home.  I have to have a cholesterol check but everything else is normal.  Doc says the PVCs (extra heart beats) are pretty normal and that maybe I should lay off the caffeine.  I think they are right about anxiety.  You can't really tell it's getting to you until you get smacked down.  I don't think the fact that I've been spending these days in the very same room where I had my last set of twins die in my hands helps much, but poor Jen has to spend every night there.  I just have to keep my head screwed on straight and help her deal with this.

So, all-in-all, not a bad day.  Thanks for all of the prayers and vibes.

Yes, they talked about the steroids.  Doc says he's going to give the steroids when/if things start to change, but that right now he'd like to hold off.

You're right, those guys scare the crap out of me.  I'm pretty sure that's why I'm having PVCs constantly, but there doesn't seem to be much to do about it except taking a beta-blocker to slow things down.  Unfortunately, my resting heart rate is a little too low for that.  Every day we get right now helps though.  To be honest, I'm more nervous right now than ever because we are so close, and if they are born we'll have to make one of those really, really hard decisions.  Keep them alive and miserable, or let them die.  That's a toughie.  Please God, don't make me have to decide.  I haven't been given that kind of wisdom yet.

What about speaking to the docs and asking for a room change?  I would imagine that they would want to provide the best possible conditions for Jen.  The stress of being in a room that holds such sad memories cannot be good for anyone! ( not to mention that a room change would also mean a roommate change!)

Room change ain't gonna happen.  All the other rooms have labor and delivery beds.  The other rooms with good beds are filled up.  It's just one of those things you gotta deal with.

I am praying for you guys constantly, and am thrilled to hear that 25 weeks have passed!!  Don't think of it as choosing a lifetime of pain or the alternative....nobody can say the course of a preemie!  Is it easy if they came early? No, but only GOD knows what is in store for them.  I have told many a person in the NICU that you have to make the best decisions you can with the information you have AT THAT TIME.  Trust always that you are making decisions with only love and their best interests at heart - because you are.  If you know that, you will not make a wrong decision - no matter what the outcome.

I am praying for you, BIG TIME!!!!

It is past midnight... so, we are officially at 26 weeks  That's really good.  The babies have a good chance of making it, and every day we get inside the womb is worth 3 days in the NICU (so they tell me).  I think we are actually going to make it to the finish line.

Jen has gotten so many cards and letters, thank you everyone.  It does help.  We both appreciate it.

We are at 27 weeks (yesterday) and everything is looking really good.  Jen is still in the hospital, of course.

We had a growth scan yesterday, and the boys are looking totally normal.  They currently weigh just over 2 pounds (2 lb  3 oz, and 2 lb 4 oz).  Jen is still having a rough go, but hanging in there.

It is a relief to finally be within striking distance... chances are good now that we will have live babies with a pretty good outlook.  All of the scans show normal growth, and we're at a level 3 neo-natal ICU, so I think the biggest worry about delivering too early is almost behind us.  28 weeks is the magical number... 5 days to go!

Between trying to get my job in San Jose done and being at the hospital, I think I would go nuts if I couldn't divert my attention here every now and then to crank up the political debate... hehe.  That's almost as good as a Red Bull for the heart pumping action.  Dr. Fu to the rescue.

I hope you understand you're going to be sharing parenting rights to these two once they're born! We've all assumed parental rights having gone through the pregnancy with you. Great news, keep that stuff coming!

Our church had you listed in our prayer bulletin for our prayer service tonight.  The staff and school faculty have had you all on their lists for the last several weeks, but they decided to put it out to the entire church tonight.  That is usually kept for things within the church, but since you are friends of mine they stretched it.  Course, there is a lot of interest within the staff.  I get asked a couple of times a week if there is any new news.  Hang in there!

From the father of a 1lb. 9oz. preemie, I know what you guys are going through. Its a tough long road, but everything will be fine. Hang tough. I learned more in the two months when he was in the NICU than I have the rest of my life.

Well, tomorrow is 29 weeks... holy crap we're actually going to have babies!  I'm a little askeered now.   :o

Jen is doing much better.  She hasn't thrown up in a week.  The diet they have her on and the stomach medicine seem to be doing the job.  I even got to wheel her down to the hospital courtyard for her first real sunshine in 5 weeks, so that was cool.  Even so, she is going stir crazy.  I think she is probably going to start online shopping for baby stuff, I am so screwed.

They are talking about lletting her go home (possibly) around the 32 week mark.  Let's hope they need to consider *that*.

No real updates, things seem OK.  The Doc is finally figuring out that Jen has some stupidly-rare condition that I can't even describe yet, and they're trying to figure out the best course of action, which might even be to do nothing about it.  Worst case, they might try to induce her early, but that's fine now.  On Thursday we are at 30 weeks.

Never a dull moment though.

Okay, babies.  Listen up!!

Your parents love you and we love you.  Mom and Dad need some rest so when you finally make your entrance into the world, please be the best babies that you can be, okay?

Soon you will enter the world of strange people called Clusterheads and although we are a bit strange, we are good people.

You will be receiving loads of love, presents and tons of Aunts and Uncles.....you have no choice in this matter so get used to it. :)

Continue to grow, stay healthy and know that tons of people have been are continuing to send prayers, good thoughts and lots of love your way. :-*

Hi Everybody,

Our twins were brought into this world at 8:40pm tonight at 31 weeks, 5 days.  Peter and Ethan are doing GREAT, but they'll be spending the next couple of weeks in the NICU.

Peter weighed in at 3lbs 11oz, and Ethan weighed in at 4 lbs.

Once again, thank you all for your prayers and wishes.  It looks like we pulled off a small miracle.

Update:  Peter is doing great.  Ethan has had a couple setbacks and is back on the canula.  His little heart stops about 3-4 times an hour.  Nothing they don't see every day at the NICU, so we're not freaking out about it.  I'm glad he's in a good place!

Update:  Peter is doing great.  Ethan has had a couple setbacks and is back on the canula.  His little heart stops about 3-4 times an hour.  Nothing they don't see every day at the NICU, so we're not freaking out about it.  I'm glad he's in a good place! -Shawn

The boys are prescious little tykes!!

The NICU nurses are truly angels, and the boys are in the best of places for now.

My Judy had preemie twins at 26 weeks so I can relate to some of the things that you all are going thru.  If you or Jen need an understanding shoulder, call on me.

Put your worries on the back burner and take it one day at a time.  Before you know it, they'll be on the football team at school.

F, I cannot tell you how thrilled I am and so thankful to God for your little ones.  This has a been a long road for you both, but look at the result.  Two beautiful, and healthy babies.  It put a smile on my face looking at the pictures.  It made my day.

Sorry I've been very busy trying to keep up with everything...

The boys are in the step down unit of the NICU.  They eat every 3 hours, they're up to about 4 feedings per day by breast or bottle, the rest is by lavage (tube).  We spend about 3 hours per day there.  We get to change diapers, give baths, bottles or Jen can breast feed.  They'll let them come home as soon as the babies prove they can sustain their weight on the bottles.  They look pretty healthy, and have both just hit the 5lb mark.  With any luck, we'll have them home by New Years.

We have the house all ready... just want those cute buggers home.

I could write pages and pages about Peter and Ethan, they are so completely different.  Right now, I'm in San Jose to work until Thursday.  This is my week.  At least I'm employed.

As usual, I'm in San Jose working, so I don't get to see the boys until Thursday.  They are getting 1/2 of their feeding by bottles or breast now, so things are looking really good to possibly have them home before Christmas.

Now that would be a nice Christmas!

Hi All,

Peter had his feeding tube removed tonight, and Ethan had his removed a few days ago.  They are both at 5 lb 12 oz.  It looks like we'll get Ethan home on Wednesday, and possibly Peter on Saturday or Sunday.

Wow Shawn....Just Wow!!!!!

Congratulations to you and Jen!!!! The boys look wonderful!!!  I'm jealous as heck that they got to be in Giraffe Isolettes as big as they were!!  We only have 2 for our 40 bed NICU, so we can only put the teeniest ones in there!  I wish we had 40 of them!! hehe

The boys look so great, and I'm thrilled that they were home for Christmas!!!!!  That's just terrific!!!!  So glad that they worked it for you to take them home together!!!

I've been taking care of a twin lately in the NICU, and obviously I cannot share any details, but I've become ridiculously attatched.  The baby looked sooooooo cute for Christmas!!
