DENVER - House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Wednesday that a $150 billion economic stimulus plan is needed now because of the faltering economy and she may call the House into session after the election to pass it.

Pelosi told reporters that the stock market meltdown, which has caused an estimated $2 trillion loss from pension funds, was a factor in her recommendation for a second stimulus bill. The first relief plan sent out $600-$1,200 tax rebate checks to most individuals and couples this year.

The House did pass a $61 billion economic aid proposal last month before lawmakers left Capitol Hill ahead of the Nov. 4 election. But a similar plan failed to pass the Senate. President Bush had promised a veto anyway.

If Democratic nominee Barack Obama wins the White House and if Capitol Hill Democrats make gains in the elections as well, it might be easier to pass a stimulus measure over dispirited Republicans, especially if the economy remains in big trouble.

The Senate is expected to be back at work after Election Day to complete a public lands bill and perhaps deal with other matters, such as a measure to extend unemployment benefits. The House also could return to consider a stimulus plan and additional issues in a lame-duck session before the newly elected Congress takes over in January.

"We may have to go back into session before the next Congress," Pelosi said.

Pelosi said a stimulus package would create jobs by investing in public works, increasing food stamps benefits and extending unemployment insurance for the long-term jobless. She said lawmakers need to "hunker down" and look closely at the federal budget for possible savings, and reconsider whether the U.S. can afford to fight "a war without end" in Iraq.

"We have some very harsh decisions to make and some of them can't wait until January," said Pelosi, D-Calif.

"What we can't wait for is a stimulus package," Pelosi added. "We may have to go back into session before the next Congress."

Ok...

so the first one didn't spur the economy as they thought it would.  What is another 150 B going to do?  So I'd get another 900 bucks, and now that I have no job, that will go straight to paying the rent for 2 months in advance to tide me through.  Yeah that will help the economy.  Some other person will pay off their credit card bill from putting their gas purchases on it.  Others still will bank it for the higher cost of heating fuel this winter.

It's just another infected bandaid idea.

I can't stand it any longer.......B$, that move will create plenty of jobs......People will have to be hired by the government to administer all the programs, plus there will be a need for more workers at the polls to handle the increase in voters showing their gratitude by voting for those responsible for this grand plan.

Any more questions?

WASHINGTON (AFP) — The Fed said that an 85-billion-dollar loan facility made available to AIG last month had been used up and that the new cash would be transferred from the New York Fed, which would take securities from AIG and inject cash in return.

"The New York Fed will borrow up to 37.8 billion dollars in investment-grade, fixed-income securities from AIG in return for cash collateral," a statement from the Federal Reserve said.

Hate to say it Pegg, but I think we're beyond that already.  Me thinks the monetary system is imploding and we're going to bottom out (courtesy of our congress/senate) before things start to stabilize again.

The worst part of the Pelosi legacy is that she will continue to wield her power to insure that absolutely positively nothing of any importance will ever be accomplished as long as she is allowed to have the absolute control over legislation.

With Emperor Nancy and Darth Reid running the galaxy we are for sure truly doomed to political and economic failure.

Then on the news today the story of how the AIG executives go to a resort and complement themselves to a $440,000.00 vacation resort with $23,380 in spa treatments.

Hmmmmm....

from BBC News

Quote:
US warns of further bank failures
The US treasury secretary has warned some banks will still fail despite the $700bn government rescue package to shore up the financial system.

Henry Paulson called for the plan's swift implementation, but said the financial crisis would not end soon.

Seven central banks on Wednesday cut interest rates in an effort to steady the faltering global economy.

But the moves failed to cheer world stock markets, and Thursday saw sluggish sales on Asia's main indexes.

Japan's benchmark Nikkei index was volatile on Thursday, having suffered its biggest one-day drop in 21 years the previous day shedding nearly 10% of its value.

By lunchtime, it had regained early losses, 1.25% up. The Bank of Japan announced it had injected two trillion yen ($20.1bn) into the money markets in an effort to calm fears.

In Sydney, Australia's financial market lost ground in early trading.

South Korea's stock market also eased slightly after posting an initial gain, and the central bank announced a cut of 0.25% in its key interest rate, taking it to 5%.

Global action

In his bleak assessment, Mr Paulson warned the ongoing financial chaos had "seriously impacted" the economy.

"Even with the new treasury authorities, some financial institutions will fail," he added.

There was an equally stark warning from the International Monetary fund, which said global financial markets were facing their most dangerous shock since the 1930s.

In an unprecedented co-ordinated move on Wednesday, rates were cut by the Bank of England (to 4.5%), the US Federal Reserve (to 1.5%), and the European Central Bank (ECB) (to 3.75%), with similar cuts from the central banks of Canada, Sweden and Switzerland.

Although it did not cut its own rate - which is just 0.5% - the Bank of Japan expressed its "strong support" of the policy. In a separate move, China cut its own interest rate by 0.27%.

While European and US markets initially reacted well to the news, they later lost ground as investors were unconvinced the rate cuts were enough to solve the financial crisis.

In New York, the main Dow Jones stock index lost ground for its sixth consecutive session, ending 2% down.

The heads of the IMF and the World Bank are due to discuss the world's ongoing financial turmoil in Washington later, and finance ministers from the G7 group of industrialised nations are meeting later this week.

More work to do

The IMF's chief economist, Oliveri Blanchard, said the orchestrated rate-cuts could not solve the world's financial crisis on their own but "were clearly a step in the right direction".

[quote]The fact that the central banks have had to take such extreme measures underlines how bad market conditions have become
Julian Jessop
Capital Economics

But he warned "there will be tough economic times ahead".

Chief international economist at Capital Economics, Julian Jessop, said the rate cut would provide a "temporary boost to confidence", but warned there was still a lot more work to do.

"The fact that the central banks have had to take such extreme measures underlines how bad market conditions have become," said Mr Jessop.

On Wednesday, the UK government unveiled a £400bn ($692bn) package of measures aimed at rescuing its banking system.

Italy also unveiled details of a banking rescue plan that could involve the government taking stakes in failing banks.

The US Federal Reserve, meanwhile, agreed to provide insurance giant American International Group with a $37.8bn loan on top of the $85bn loan given to the troubled firm last month.

Someone on the morning news just quoted JFK: "Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country."

He then went on to say -- start taking care of yourself and quit depending on the damn government. Start saving and quit spending. Take a page out of grandmaw's book - plan for tomorrow and quit worrying about what the government is doing today.

If everyone "saved"' 10% of their income - they've have to do without - oh heaven forbid - what would we do -- what did grandmaw do - she did without - made do.  But she got thru the depression...

We've never had to do without because we've never seen times get really bad (oh we thought they were, but we've never seen really really bad times like are a coming). We've always had to have the "best" for our kids -- well, ya know - our kids can do without "everything" - one toy at Christmas will work (did for me when I was a kid, but I was deprived). Beans have about as much protien as steak does. Turing off lights isn't a sin. Kids don't have to be in "everything" at school. Planning meals a week ahead cuts down on food buying.

There's lots of ways to cut down. May not be what you'd like to hear, but when times get bad - ya just gotta give up a few things and look out for yourself. IT's known as survival.

Now why can't the politicians just tell us that?

Hugs BD

If we are depending on them to tell us how to live, we are too idiotic to vote.  We shouldn't be looking to Washington for everyting.  That's part of the problem here.  And another part of the problem is the government is NOT leading by example.  They are spending our money at an incredibly fast pace with no responsibility and accountability.  Both sides are doing this, yet people are still questioning McCain or Obama....... If you vote for either of those guys, YOU'RE part of the problem, not the solution.
