It's in the bank of channels called "Socialist/Communist Dictators and Wannabes." |

Isn't there some sort of rules about channels, media outlets, having equal access for each candidate? (The Fairness Doctrine?)
If so, does Mccain have the right to have ad time on the Obama channel?? Honestly, this seems like foul play. (not that I expect it really matters). |

Don't forget, tomorrow night will be a 30 min. Obama infommercial on NBC, FOX & CBS at 8pm est time.

Do you think they'll run the Obamercial on the Obama channel? Or even more importantly, will they run something different on the Obama channel while the Obamercial runs? And perhaps most importantly, who will be watching the Obama channel while the Obamercial is running?
And by the way, the commish of baseball agreed to postpone the start of the game tomorrow night to accommodate The One. That's the bullshit I can't believe. |

As a thank you to ABC, Ill be watching Pushing Daisies tomorrow at 8pm EST. I have never seen the show nor do I know anything about it, but I honestly cant imagine wanting to watch 30 minutes of a guy telling us what he knows he wont be able to get accomplished.
If you want to know what Obama is going to do... dont read his website, dont listen to him...... read the Democratic platform. Pelosi et al will be running this country. |

But Obama himself acknowledges that he was drawn to socialists and even Marxists as a college student. He continued to associate with Marxists later in life, even choosing to launch his political career in the living room of a self-described Marxist, William Ayers, in 1995, when Obama was 34.

If McCain came out with an objective definition of socialism, he would be one - and Palin has long been for leeching your money for Alaskans: Quote:
It's not clear to me how the State of Alaska 'owns' oil on federal lands - the US people own that oil. But Alaska does a good job of taxing our oil and redistributing the profits to their people. I guess that the American consumer won't miss a few billion dollars. Quote:

You have to remember it is easier for a lot of folks to give up their freedom in exchange for some one to "take care" of them. The federal government has done a good job of culling the ability to think and provide for ourselves right out of the population. It's over people.

The First Amendment was written to protect speech, particularly political speech. Politicians have always used advertising and the media to get their message out - the only thing that is slightly different is that there are new media that are selling advertising opportunities that were not available ten or twenty years ago. If anything, having a half hour talk (or debates, or other longer formats) addresses that common concern that most political commercials are superficial, while the media focuses on clever sound bites. Maybe McCain should do the same and buy half-hour blocks of time to present his case to the voters?? |

The 'fairness doctrine' was repealed in 1987. While we can discuss whether broadcast media that uses the airwaves (radio and non-cable TV) should give equal time to each candidate, there is no such law or regulation. Conservatives in particular tend to find that idea objectionable and they worked effectively to have it eliminated.
Let me amend my statement: should any candidate that wishes to make his (or her) case directly to the voters be prohibited from buying airtime to do so? Melissa wrote on Oct 29th, 2008 at 11:24am:
Yes, that. But not just that - the right to propose new policies, the right to advocate for different candidates, even the right to promote shampoo and chewing gum. |

Propaganda is any communication that attempts to persuade. Many people equate propaganda with false statements, but that is not accurate - propaganda may be true or false, or it may involve values that cannot be proven either true or false. Speeches like the annual State of the Union and the Gettysburg Address are inherently propaganda, and not necessarily lies or evil. People should be able to hear such 'propaganda' from candidates and decide for themselves. To put it in other terms, of course the candidates are going to toot their own horn. It's a job interview, and the job of the selection committee (us) is to vet their claims. To answer my own question, no. I think that to have a functioning political system, candidates need to be able actually make claims and promote ideas. This may be as low-level as a bumper sticker or yard sign, speeches (which may require renting an auditorium or broadcasting the speech) or however the candidate chooses to communicate with and convince the voters. |
Title: Re: Is this for real? Post by fubar on Oct 29th, 2008 at 12:50pm
It's not much of a job interview if the interview is only listenting and not allowed to ask any tough questions. It's not much of a job interview if the interviewer gets BANNED for asking tough questions. What a joke.
I have yet to hear Obama answer even one question directly. Not that it matters, Clinton never did either. Gee, both were lawyers.... what a shock. |
Title: Re: Is this for real? Post by Charlie on Oct 29th, 2008 at 5:02pm
I'm not worried about socialist attacks on Obama. Warren Buffett isn't worried either. Republicans and other right wing parties resort to calling opponents socialist or Marxist if they feel a bit shakey. Younger voters aren't so susceptible to this. They have found what looks like someone a little more interested in at least a few things they like or need; he's different. Youngsters like different.
They only thing Republicans have to fear is that fear....like wrapping oneself in the flag...doing so this time isn't working because that group has already made up its mind..... isn't doing well this time. To young voters, it's overkill. It works on guys my age maybe, but not them. Should Obama win, the GOP has only one person to blame and of course it's Bush. It's stunning just how much damage one man and his neo-con pals have done to the GOP. Charlie........who still has doubts about the Obama show. Maybe I'm too old to appreciate the idea. |

We all know that it's the Rush Limbaugh side that makes the most noise. Still, some of the stuff here comes right out of Dennis Miller's end of the spectrum.

Title: Re: Is this for real? Post by fubar on Oct 30th, 2008 at 1:04pm
Charlie,
Those of us who have the luxury of viewing the videos that are found and posted of past Obama speeches or other factual data probably have a more learned perspective on Obama than those who can't. In my opinion, this is one of the factors that the Obama camp is counting on... the class warfare bullshit only works well on those who can't find out the real facts on Obama. Since their media isn't telling the truth and they don't have access to the other sources that will publish it (like LiveLeak), they are easier to manipulate than the more critical thinkers who do have access to that information. I don't listen to Rush, but sometimes I read about what he has recently said, and it makes me do my own research. Same deal for NPR (which my car radio tends to gravitate towards mostly because I can't stand commercials). I can listen to those left wing nut jobs and still form my own opinion just as well as I can listen to right wing nut jobs and form my own opinion. Obama is not qualified to be president (subjective statement, don't throw technical BS into it, I'm saying I don't believe he is presidential material), he has too many questionable relationships, and I fundamentally disagree on his policies. He represents everything that is wrong with the left. That is my own opinion, not Rush, not Hannity, not yours. Mine. I don't agree with everything that McCain says, and I think he is an a-hole for voting yes on the bailout, but the only way for me to not effectively vote for Obama is to vote for McCain, and I can live with that. |
Title: Re: Is this for real? Post by Charlie on Oct 30th, 2008 at 6:37pm
I just began with NPR. I'm not a regular. I never listen to radio during the day other than news. I never have my sound on here for that matter. I susupect it has something to do with my seizures. My father had them too and he was the same way. I just don't like the competition I guess. 8-)
Anyway, you guys have worn me out. Trying to watch Buffalo news broadcasts during the election is barely worth it. I've never seen anything this bad. I'm referring to State elections. This is the first time in many years that the NYS Senate may switch from GOP to Democrat and it's a bloodbath. Our State politics makes the national look like a cub scout meeting. Geeze.
