I am overcome with emotion.
This has so much meaning, more than economy, eliminating in VOLUMES the fear that everyone has put out there - even at work today, I had to deal with verbal diarrhea - how do you tell your employee who not to vote for - this is America!! And there are always the few rotten apples that spoil a perfectly good barrel, that's nature. The WORLD is celebrating. Know it, believe it!! Congratulations to all of you who know where I'm coming from - and to the new President- elect, BARACK OBAMA. [smiley=vrolijk_26.gif] GOD BLESS AMERICA!!! |

There is no doubt about that Patty. No doubt at all. It was a long fight, and the Nation has spoken.
It's a historic Moment, and the World as we knew it will be different, and bettered in many ways. I voted the issues, and it was for neither Barack or John. But I do believe that of the 2 major parties the best man won. (Sorry Fu, but but that is what I believe.) |

Don't be sorry, be proud of America. I too believe this is historic, just maybe not in the same way. We are different people who believe different things, but don't fret for me. I'm going to be fine. Obama is the one who has to deliver now. If you hadn't elected him, you wouldn't get the chance to see what he can do. I sincerely want to see Obama succeed now because I have no choice. God help us all.

Amidst all the celebrations tonight, I think John McCain should be acknowledged for his gracious and inspiring concession speech.
He remains a class act, an honorable man, and a true American hero. I wish him well. Best wishes, George |

McCain gave a wonderful speech.
It's a shame about him as he deserved to be President 8 years ago. We would have been better off. I like them both. Charlie |

Well New beginings for the country with a real chance for change, and
Brother Svenn starts his new life out of detox today also, I consider this a real bumper day. For the first time in many elections I don't feel as if I threw away my vote on a unachievable goal! BRAVO America!!! Bravo Svenn!! John |

First of all: congratulations to all my American friends here and in other places. I'm quite sure mr. Obama will try to be as good a president he can, and the people have spoken for a big change.
I have wondered a lot lately whom I would've voted if I were American. But all in all my choice is mr. Obama as well. In some ways he's too left for me, but what took me over is that he wants better healthcare for everyone, and topics like pro-choice. Not a big fan however from retreating the troops. I fear it will further Iraq into deeper trouble, and more threat from there to the West. When I see all those celebrating people right now at CNN and the likes, it just warms my heart. Nice to see a neopagan here! I've always suspected it from the pentagram, but now I'm sure. All the best, Pascal. |

I can't even describe the feeling I had when the election was called last night. It was truly a moment in history.
When I graduated from high school, this man, who is now going to be our 44th president, could NOT have had lunch with me at Joe's Grill because of his color. For those who never witnessed segregation - you can't even begin to know how monentous this is. It goes back to what we were taught in grade school - no matter who you are - any kid can grow up to be President of the United States. I never believed that until last night. I had a phone called shortly after the election was called (a wrong number) from a guy named Sonny. When he found out it was a wrong number, he said he didn't care, he just needed to talk to someone. We talked for about 20 minutes. He was yelling and crying and just talking. It was unreal. McCain made a great speech and I admire him for it. Now it's time we forget our differences and become the "United" States of America. Hugs BD |

Right on George. He has show class and dignity. Too bad he wasn't this way all through the process or it might have been closer. I felt sad for this guy. Or at least the guy he was in 2000 - I can't tell who he is anymore as he's shifted a few times on me. I think he changed to line up with Bush to get the nomination and endorsments and in these times that is hard to ignore. Bottom line is there was no way he was going to dig himself out of the historically deep hole GW Bush dug for him. And then the Palin thing. Ouch. He never had a chance. I am hopefull that by him running and being so gracious that Obama WILL keep the promises Bush never kept about reaching across the isle. The USA needs to get over the "who is winning" deal and unite to fix the horrible mess the previous greed filled idiots left us in. |

Yes, congratulations to our first bi-racial President. It is a step in the right direction for our Country.
As he said in his speech last night, welcome to the era of "service and sacrafice". I'll reserve judgement until I see if that's voluntary or mandatory service and sacrafice. The journey continues. |

From another thread:

BarbaraD wrote on Nov 5th, 2008 at 7:04am:
One way differences were settled in the old days. After service on the western frontier, Seminole Wars, and as Mexican War hero, "Old Rough and Ready" Zack Taylor was president and was highly noted for informal dress, never in proper uniform and continued the same dress as president as he had when commanding armies in the field. The lands acquired from the Mexican War, California, New Mexico, and Utah (Deseret) were controversial in Congress, Texas wanted the land as far West as Santa Fe and sent a swashbuckling delegation to confront Old Zack with a threat of secession. Accounts of the meeting of course can vary but despite friend and former son-in-law being Jefferson Davis until his daughter's young death, if there is a dream of a Ted Nugent type, here was one popular account from "Zack Taylor," American History Illustrated 5: ...when a group of southern Congressmen came to the White House and threatened secession unless they got their way on New Mexico and the fugitive slave law, he replied angrily that "if it becomes necessary I'll take command of the army myself and if you are taken in rebellion against the Union I will hang you will less reluctance than I hanged deserters and spies in Mexico." I believe Santa Fe is in New Mexico now. ;) |

I just finally got a chance to watch John Mccain's concession speech. In it he displayed the real John McCain, a man of honor, class, dignity, and love for this country. I hope our President-Elect will prove to be close to the servant for this country that John McCain has over the last 50 or so years. The real McCain disappeared over the last 12 months and that is a shame, but it was good to see him back last night. I hope he will be able to join our President elect and find ways to better this country that fly in the face of partisan politics.
Congrats to my President-elect. He and his campaign staff did everything they could to win this race and they were amazingly productive and effective. My hope is that he can be the same way in the Oval Office. Finally, i hope this will be a time for all of us here to move away from the political antagonism that has caused such friction on the board. I respect everyone's opinions and I hope that we all can walk away respecting one another. In the end we all were showing passion for what we think was best for our great nation. Thank you for your support, God Bless America and PF days ahead for you all. |

You are right about the concession speech. It was the real John McCain. Not many around with the kind of grace and class he has.

Well Now!
I rarely voice this kind of an opinion, being a Viet Nam Veteran and having that connection with John McCain almost made me feel guilty about not supporting him in his bid for President But you have to look beneath the surface at the facts! Did we really need a Playboy who finished at the very bottom of his class in school, a Philanderer, who was notorious for chasing women and obtained a marriage license to wed his new wife, while still married to the first, covered up his new wife’s drug addiction and all the other documented problems with ethic's he has running our country? Kind of looked like Nixon all over again! At least that’s my slant on it, everything is documented in fact if you just look for it! I saw enough to sway my vote! Hoping for the change that we have been promised! We all know its hollow without the support of the other branches of the legislature! Only words without ACTION AND ACCOUNTABILITY, Hopefully congress and the senate will cooperate with him and make the changes we need to stabilize this country! I believe its even documented in his book that he said, "I don't want to change this country, I only want to be president" John who is proud to be an American today! |

President Elect Obama has the opportunity to be one of the greatest Presidents in American history. He has promised much. Now we'll see if he can deliver. I hope that all of the hype doesn't lead to disappointment to those that believe so strongly in him. Whether one voted for him or not, he will soon lead our country. I pray that he lives up to the expectations of those that put him where he is.

Whilst not claiming to know any thing about American politics, the general concensus at work to day was the better man won. I offer my congratulations to those who are happy with the outcome and hope the others will come around in time.
It is felt that he will be good for your country and be able to change the view that Europe/World has of America for the better., golly gosh he even has a passport and has used it, that has got to be a good thing. I also want to wish him the best of luck, he cannot be worse than some and may be much better than many, but what ever happens this is a major event in Americas history and the world is watching it all, you all are at the centre of the universe at this moment so enjoy. ;) |

Here is a guy that won the election and chose one of my favorite Democrats for a running mate. I'd have voted for Biden any day. Give this guy a chance. When he looks cross-eyed at one of you, have your fun.
Never has it been so well demonstated that you have the right to vote the bums out. You'll also find that Obama will be more centrist that expected. Charlie |

You should look into what is really going on in these other countries because a lot of those were out of context. Our government and our media don't report what all we do to these countries and if they do, they twist it around so everyone else is the bad bad guys. Not saying they're always innocent, but people need to look more into what is really going on. |

Title: Re: A Powerful Moment Post by Audre on Nov 5th, 2008 at 10:06pm
I know, our media didn't report on a lot of things on both sides. But I'm not talking just elections, I'm talking our foreign relationship and why these countries seem to be so pissed off at us. Since we don't get the full story, many are quick to say these countries are terrorists or possible threats, while we're over there egging them on, trying to get them pissed at us.
|
Title: Re: A Powerful Moment Post by Charlie on Nov 5th, 2008 at 10:24pm
We aren't that bad......geeze. 8-) I spent some time tonight watching C-SPAN foreign newscasts....two of them state-controlled....reacting to the election and also about our relationships. Aside from Russia and Venezuela, we're pretty well thought of but Europe and some others will be happy when they don't have to deal with Bush. He did blow a historic chance for international good will and cooperation after 9-11.
One thing though is that while they are telling us how great it is that we pleased them with the election; they aren't looking at themselves. None of these large western countries has done anything close to what we did on Tuesday. We're doing just fine. Charlie |

Melo.. thank you for posting this - this is a great characterization of what is being felt in hearts and minds of so many. This city is pulsating here. My child, many years after myself as a child, finds the meaning resonates with her, here and now. Here is the full text of the real and eloquent Maya Angelou. Still I Rise You may write me down in history With your bitter, twisted lies, You may trod me in the very dirt But still, like dust, I'll rise. Does my sassiness upset you? Why are you beset with gloom? 'Cause I walk like I've got oil wells Pumping in my living room. Just like moons and like suns, With the certainty of tides, Just like hopes springing high, Still I'll rise. Did you want to see me broken? Bowed head and lowered eyes? Shoulders falling down like teardrops. Weakened by my soulful cries. Does my haughtiness offend you? Don't you take it awful hard 'Cause I laugh like I've got gold mines Diggin' in my own back yard. You may shoot me with your words, You may cut me with your eyes, You may kill me with your hatefulness, But still, like air, I'll rise. Does my sexiness upset you? Does it come as a surprise That I dance like I've got diamonds At the meeting of my thighs? Out of the huts of history's shame I rise Up from a past that's rooted in pain I rise I'm a black ocean, leaping and wide, Welling and swelling I bear in the tide. Leaving behind nights of terror and fear I rise Into a daybreak that's wondrously clear I rise Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave, I am the dream and the hope of the slave. I rise I rise I rise. Maya Angelou |

I think you're delusional if you think Obama was the only one that they didn't report on. As for CH-Hell.....you should actually read what I said. Did I once say anything about Iraq or anyone serving? No, I didn't. I have lots of friends and family that are or have served there, and I have a lot of respect for them and am not about to "shit on them". We are, in fact, labeling countries as terrorists. It has nothing to do with Afghanistan or Iraq, whatever your views are on those. It has to do with our government playing up the scare card; our media reporting only one side, and twisting it to make us look like the good guys, when we aren't always. Example: Russia - they're pissed at us because we're putting missiles up in Poland, which can hit them and Iran. They're pissed at us for the way we reacted towards them and the Georgia invasion. We condemn Russia for supposedly invading, when they did not, and we even put an embargo on them for it. Not to mention, we were the ones that trained and equipped the Georgian army. Read more about Venezuela and the supposed dictator, about the coup that kidnapped him and American's reaction to that and our reaction to him leading up to that. "Our concern with Venezuela is they're the third largest supplier of petroleum and Chavez does not have the interests of the United States at heart." .... There's so much more going on in the Middle East, that doesn't have to do with our military and it's pretty ignorant to link what I said to shitting on them. Read more about what's going on. That's why so many countries are excited about Obama being President. They feel he's more calm and diplomatic and not a hawk like McCain or Bush. They're hoping he'll reach his hand out to them in a way we haven't done for a very long time. |

I did not vote for Obama. That being said it was exciting to see history being made the other night. I was (a little) conciously proud to be an American for the first time since I cannot remember.
I am optimisitc and hope that this will help put our country in a better direction that it has been going. I think Obama is capable of being great. He seems decent enough, tough enough, and resolved enough, and the stage is set. In one aspect, it is good for Obama. Things have not been this bad in a long time. Should be easy to do somethings correct and make some progress. Bad news is the same as the good. It hasn't been this bad in a long time, so while getting it going the right direction should be easy (how can it get any worse than what Bush left it?) getting big time results will take lots of work, and time. I wish him all the best. A lot of people are depending on him now. |
