Title: I know it's a lot to ask...
Post by Melissa on Nov 26th, 2008 at 10:43am
But if you have the time, could you send my brother-in-law Matt a Christmas/holiday card?  He's in Iraq right now out in the middle of nowhere and very, very home sick.

Here's his address:

Corporal Matthew Filtz
1/4 Engineer Plt
Unit 40250
FPO AP 96426-0250

Thank you SO much!!! :-*

p.s.  He is the most family oriented person I know and after talking with him on the phone 15 min. ago, you could just hear how depressed and distraught he is at not being home.  I know it's selfish of me to ask when there are so many others in the same situation, but I just can't help it. :'(

Mel,
It would be an honor to send him a card.
I bet he'll get flooded with them from clusterville.
Thanks for letting us know...it's certainly not asking to much!

Much Love,
Jackie

Oh the irony of saying "I know it's a lot to ask" when asking to do a small thing for a Serviceperson overseas.

Anyone else find it ironic?

Helen, I just emailed Matt to find out.  I sorta wanted this to be a surprise for him, so hopefully he doesn't catch onto anything.

You guys are AWESOME!!!  Thank you again! [smiley=biggrin.gif]

btw, FramCire, I think the reason why I put the title the way I did, is because there are so many here who have problems of their own I really hate to bother anyone about it, but did so in the hopes that a couple would take me up on it.  And I'm just thrilled that people are!!!

Count me in too Mel.  I would imagine that the sooner we send them, the better due to the distance and then of course all the red tape in processing mail for soldiers.   Am I correct?

Yes.  You could wait a week or two at the MOST, but it's best to get them in the mail as soon as you can.  For example, a USPS Priority mail box takes 8 days to get to him from Wisconsin.

1st, call me Eric.

2nd, I hope you take didn't take my post as questioning you in any way.  I just was trying to suggest that this kind of thing isnt a lot to ask for people who give so much.

TY again everyone.  And Eric, I understand now, thanks.

If anyone is wanting to send a card from overseas, perhaps the easiest thing to do would be to send them to me first, and then I'll forward them to him.  If you'd like to do it this way instead, PM me for my address.

Oh he's going to be so surprised!! :)

Mel,

You are not being selfish!  You cannot ask for others, unless you happen to know their particulars, but you can as for one who needs it that you know so well.  I know how much it meant to us when some of you all sent stuff to Rob while he was over there.

Mine will go out first of the week, as soon as I get a chance after getting home.

Jerry

Quite frankly, it sounds MORE than ironic - it sounds crazy!

OF COURSE!

It'll be on the way next week.  Can we send home-made food, like brownies or something?  Or is that a problem?

Eric, I just fired him off an email and will post soon. :) :) :)

Thank you Melissa.  My family is going to make this an annual thing on Thanksgiving.  We always have troops overseas and when we arent at war we often forget that.

We are heading to Nana's house with construction paper.  If you want to email/PM a few other names of guys in his platoon, we will address them to multiple people.

Thanks for checking with him.  Could they use playing cards??

Then brownies it is, because that's what I'm good at.  :)  I'll put 'em in a Christmas tin (otherwise they're not very Christmas-y).

I'm embarrassed to say - we have a number of friends with kids in Iraq, and it didn't occur to me before to send anything.   [smiley=bag.gif]  Thanks to you, Mel, I'm going to correct that this year!

Ok, just heard from Matt!!!  He wrote:

"I would like some christmas lights, just a little set. I also like more of the nonfiction books on human philosophy, and psychology."

Who woulda thunk??  lol  Actually, I think I may have influenced him a bit when I sent with him , after he got out of boot camp just before he went to Japan, a copy of "The Tao of Pooh". :-/

Anyway, I am 100% positive he will be grateful for anything anyone sends him. :)

Mel - get him to set up a wish list at Amazon so we don't double up on books

Actually get him to do two. One for him and one for his platoon. Please. That's MY Christmas wish. Tell him it would be unlucky not to grant it LOL (cos I know where you live!!)

Helen- he hasn't gotten back to me yet on the guys he's with.  I believe that it is a small group of them, they're in one of the city's that was bombed to oblivion and are moving a ton of earth.  When he gets back to me on that, then I'll see if he has time to set up anything at Amazon.

Before I sent him his last package, I asked him if he needed any personal care items, and he said no, that they can get them there.  What he did want, was to receive items that meant something to us, not him.  Like what reminds you of winter, Christmas or whatever it is you celebrate.  What makes you happy?  That is what interests him.  Well, that and any home made goodies. ;)

Thank you all!! :)  I've started on his Christmas package already and can't wait to send it when it's finished.

In that case, a card and a little package of treats will be winging it's way to Matt and his buddies tomorrow afternoon. I'm gonna wrap up a shoebox with some Christmas paper tonight.

Does the box have to have anything special on it?

A little advice on mailing packages to the sand box…

CP72 customs declaration and dispatch note box 17 return to sender check box.

We have in the past checked (Treat as Abandoned) because (Return to Sender) notes you are responsible for return postage. This only applies to priority mail and was not printed on the form. If it is regular mail they will return it free of charge…

Mine went in the post yesterday.

Here, the forces get a BFPO when they are serving, which (I think) is the same as the FPO you gave Mel. I hope so anyway, because all BFPO packages are free to send from the UK.

This means I'm a little worried that it won't make it, but it should do, right? BFPO/FPO... It's all the same surely???
