Title: CH and Latrality/ Handedness Post by Ade on Nov 26th, 2008 at 7:29pm
Hi All,
Does anyone know if there is a correlation between handedness/ laterality and CH? I for one am a left-hander. Would be interesting to see this incorporated into the cluster quiz... Ade. |

Interesting, for me it's the opposite!
From what I understand, functional brain asymmetry is less pronounced in us sinister (left-handed) types. I was wondering if there was a greater incidence of CH in left handers... Anyone else have this? (handedness opposite to pain) Ade. |

I can write with both hands, but I tend to use my Right more.
My CH is left sided. I've started to understand why the left side is 'sinister'. Mine certainly is. |

I don't think it is related, but I am right handed, chronic on right side, episodi on left.

Go to the link to the survey on the main page, then click the button that shows you the results without you having to put any answers in. Once I found out it was on the site, I figured that out. :D |

I conducted a survey amongst sufferers of CH in the UK in 2004 which, amongst other things, addressed the issue of handedness and hit side.
Amongst the episodic sample (N=175) 22 were left-handed, 175 were right-handed and the remainder (8) claimed to be ambidextrous. This appears to reflect the national average, although figures do vary in this respect. The bases are probably too low to look carefully at lefties and the others but nothing obvious sticks out amongst these. In terms of the right-handers, their hit sides were reported as follows: Right sided only (43%) Left sided only (34%) Mainly right/sometimes left (11%) Mainly left/sometimes right (8%) Both sides equally (3%) So, a higher proportion of right sided hits, but nothing significant really. I haven't looked at the CCH sufferers as yet (N=66) but will do so if anyone is interested. -Lee |

Where's the edit button gone?
The total base for ECH should read 205 not 175 in total ::) -Lee |
