It's still making it up to around 40○ here in the afternoon.   You all are making me jealous with that beautiful snow.  We don't get too much of that around here anymore.   I swear we had more snowy winters when I was a kid.  I LOVE it!  Of course, I get to work from my home so I don't have to drive in it.  WARNING!!!! People in St. Louis CANNOT drive when ANYTHING falls from the sky.

House question for you snow dwellers (since I will be one in the not too distant future).  If your house is on a raised foundation, how do you keep the pipes from freezing?  Is it just a matter of good insulation on the pipes or does the crawl space warm up once the snow covers the foundation vents?

Title: Re: baby it's cold outside...
Post by jimmers on Dec 4th, 2008 at 9:48am
Bob,

Most of the houses in the larger cities have full basements and the furnace usually keeps it warm enough to keep the pipes from freezing. As for crawl spaces, an electrical "heat tape" can be used to keep the pipes from freezing. Vacation homes up North are usually winterized by blowing out the pipes and putting antifreeze in the toilets.

Did anyone ever notice a lot of babies up here are born in Sept/Oct?

That's another way to stay warm ;) Both my boys are September babies ::)

Mine is going to be a year round living house.  It will just have a crawl space underneath.  I am planning on a hydronic radiant heated floor, under hardwood, so maybe if I keep the pipes (here they use PEX) up tight against the underside of the heated floor and then the insulation between the floor joist covering the tubing it will be ok.

No snow at my lot yet but the nights are in the low 20's.

Where are you moving to, Bob?

Title: Re: baby it's cold outside...
Post by BMoneeTheMoneeMan on Dec 4th, 2008 at 11:08am
That is not a very effective source of heat, Bob.  Radiant floor heat with a heat pump for heat and an insulated tank to hold water is probably the most efficient way to heat........however, wood is not a very good conductor of heat.

In fact, wood is actually a good insulator because it does such a poor job of conducting heat.

I am SO glad you folks are talking degrees Celsius.  I would not want someone to think it is actually cold here.

Phew, I need to put a "T" shirt on this balmy weather is making me sweat. ::)

Actually B$, particle board transfers heat quite well. The new composite wood floors work ok in the IFH applications I have seen here in Minnesota. ;)

I'm using this:

and a Takagi tankless water heater that is 94% efficient.  I'm backing it up with a "Fireplace Extrordinaire" that can pump out 80K Btuh.

In cold weather heat pumps suck unless you're putting in geothermal ground loops for heat transfer.

I'm building in Clio, Calif., in the northern Sierra, about 45 miles northwest of the Trukee/Tahoe area.

My main concern was my domestic cold water lines but I think doing what I said above will work.  Guess I should just ask the neighbors what they're doing.

<pondering>..........

Weird.

Tankless, huh?
Does water circulate all the time or does the water only circulate when the thermostat falls below temp?
What temp will the water in the pipes be at delivery?
No tank at all??

And then you have another tankless for the faucets?

Hmmmmm.........

Title: Re: baby it's cold outside...

Here's the heater:
START PRINTPAGEMultimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or RegisterEND PRINTPAGE

You can do it 2 ways:
Direct - where the heating water circulates in the floor loops (only when the thermostat calls and starts a circ pump) and the domestic hot is Tee'd off of this, through a tempering valve and then to the faucets.

Indirect - where the heating loop is closed and heated by the domestic hot water via a heat exchanger.

As for temperature - you can reset the temp based on outside air temp, the colder it is outside the hotter the water gets.  They generally run fairly low temp, 110-140 degrees and the circ pumps are only fractional horsepower.  Also easy to make different heating zones within the house.  I'm planning on one zone for the master suite, one for the living area and one for the guest rooms upstairs.

I noticed that you didn't get all the snow off the deck.  There's a few small clumps to the right and left of the guage. There's alittle on the rail as well.  Just here to help.

I'm going to go out and rake leaves in my t-shirt now.

I'm not qualified to talk about other forms of heating. Almost everybody in my city of 32,000 uses a forced air gas furnace. The first gas well was located not far from here.

My pipes are comfy in my basement. I don't bother to heat it but while the furnace and blower make the rest of my abode a paradise, it keeps the cellar about 50 degrees. Just FYI Linda, that photo is from last year when we had 120 inches of snow (not all at once, needless to say).  Right now we only have 7 inches on the ground but it's just as pretty (and there's more on the way tonight).

And that's my neighbor's house.  It's my patio on which I'm standing, looking out over my backyard.  We used to have to shovel pathways for our short legged dog to go do his business in the yard.  He's gone now, so no more tunnels.

Don't worry Linda.  The snow lasts a day or 3.  Trouble is that the area is so far back in the stone age, they don't have plows or salt.  One inch of snow shuts the towns down till it melts.  Here in Wisconsin 1 inch isn't even plowed.   ;D

But it's true, we don't handle snow near as well down here as you guys do up there.

When I was in S. Ill, Carbondale area Christmas 2001, there were roses blooming on the bushes on Christmas day.

2002 Christmas was an ice storm that shut the town down for a week.  I was dedicated as the one to drive everywhere that winter because I was the only one who knew how to manouver a car in that weather.

Linda, it's better to live in an area where winters are relitively mild, than live up here if you are unsure of navigating crazy frozen roads.

On a different note, It's never gotten so freaken hot up here that sections of highway have exploded due to the expansion of the rebar under the asphalt...that was wicked nasty shit.

I spent 2 yrs. in Spokane, Washington where winters were pretty harsh and it seemed to me that it no longer melted off and it would snow again for days on end.  Had to put snow tires on my Merc.  and had to learn how to drive in that white stuff.

Mastiff who lives on the Western side of Washington, near Seattle called me a wuss.  Or was that a wimp.  I forget now.  But I did learn how to navigate and live in the stuff, so I should be all right in KY

I had frost on my windshield one morning and I looked at it for a second.  Tried to figure out what it was.

Then I went in the car, turned the defroster on high, and five seconds later it was gone.

Whew.  Almost had to get the credit card scraper out.  That's scary.

No ice and snow for me, thanks.

I still want to know who designed the highways down there that they can melt and explode in the heat?

Right damn in front of a driver...(I don't WANT to know what would happen if it went UNDER a car)

The summer 2002 there was 18 highway asphalt explosions between Carbondale and Marion Il in 2 weeks.

Who builds these roads anyway?
