Title: I need a new router Post by Rolomatic on Dec 10th, 2008 at 12:03pm
Any suggestions / advice for a good deal on a router?
I don’t need an access point because I already have one and the router is in a different location. VPN single tunnel would be nice but not necessary. Built in switch / hub not necessary. Thx, Roland. 8-) |

If you want an easy VPN and a really secure firewall protecting your home, the CheckPoint Safe@Office device is awesome. I have been using one for a long time now, and it works flawlessly. Slightly pricey ($200)

I have a Netgear FVS328 router, and yes this comes with a Q..
RIP direction = both RIP Version = 2B (or 2M) I am on Comcast Cable 15mb service. Just wondering if RIP matters cuz ah, I don’t know da answer… I have problems that go away on router reboot. CH.com mostly, and 25% of the crap my wife wants to go to. All of the kids sites work fine until they click yes to MM Flash player update, and then it’s time for the flash uninstaller program again…All of the game TCP/UDP port forwards work fine. It happens on all 7 computers on my network HW / WL - seperate W/L AP. Renewing the lease clears the problem also. Suggestions appreciated (unless it’s related to wood working) ;D Roland. :) notseinfeld wrote on Dec 10th, 2008 at 3:20pm:
I may take you up on it if I cant figure out why this one keeps acting up. The web pages lock up for 5 min sometimes but POP works fine as do all the other dumb pages like Yahoo and Google…Thx notseinfeld 8-) |

I just had a problem like that, every computer was effected. I discovered that ping times to the router were really weird. I was sure it was the router. I unplugged cables until ping times were normal, that fixed the connection of the other boxes. The problem turned out to be the cable between a switch and my desktop. That one cable effected web browsing on all the computers. Other protocols were not effected. It was strange, and I expected the cable change to be temporary, but it has never come back. There is a virus (Trojan, technically) running around claiming to be a flash update... maybe your problems aren't related to the router?

Shawn, would the virus be undetectable? I keep thinking it’s the dam router because it clears immediately on reboot or lease renew. Hell, I don’t know. I changed the RIP to multicast and it does seem better. It hasn’t done it since I changed the RIP version. It may also be McAfee but the Comcast version does not have a way to suspend without shutting down the processes in task manager. If it happened again, I am going to uninstall McAfee to see if that could be the culprit. I may take David up on his offer. I wish I had a spare to swap for a diagnostic check.
Thx guys, Roland. ;) |

Any reason why you use RIP at all?

I have problems with logging into my W/L access point with RIP off. I found the problem. Da, it's the IE7 cookie blocker for the Skype buttons and Pay-Pal cookies. Roland. [smiley=ohjez.gif] [smiley=damncomputer.gif] |
