Title: What does your CH pain "look" like? Post by Jeannie on Dec 17th, 2008 at 4:38pm
Sorry I have been starting so many threads lately. I just have a lot of thoughts rolling around in my usually empty head! This'll be the last one for a while... I promise!
Ever since I was a little girl, I have kind of visualized what my pain would look like to others if it could be physically seen. I would have a spike coming out of the top of my head...just to the right a little bit. It would go all the way down past my eye and to my cheek, right at my sinus. There would be an ice pick stuck up my nose and in my ear. There would be nails nailed into my teeth on the right side of my mouth. I am just curious what your pain would look like? Jeannie |

During the shadow phase? A gigantic shadow. It doesn't really have a form in my mind. Right before an attack, it's a little shadow-man sitting on my shoulder, pressing his hands on my left side of my face...
When the attack starts, he turns into a gigantic monster, his teeth tearing down, through my eye, or from the top of my head down. His mouth is wrapped around the left side of my head. He's squeezing my neck and shoulder with one hand, and I dance to try to fling him off. |

Along those lines, they say "God only gives you what you can handle". Well, not trying to brag, but if anyone else in my family had CH for even a week, never mind 20 years, I truly believe they would not be able to "handle" it. But why anyone at all has to get it, that part I don't know.

That picture of the devil with his fist in the sufferers eye was drawn by one of our members by the name of Fletcher (sp?) It is copywritten.
Dr. Goadsby has confirmed that the hypothalamus of a ch sufferer is larger than those who don't have ch. Please use the menu to the left to find articles and archieved threads in regard to it's action and importance in the cause of cluster headache. My headaches started with a blow torch which got hotter and hotter until it melted my skull on the headache side including my eye, the bone surrounding my eye and nose. |

Title: Re: What does your CH pain "look" like? Post by starlight on Dec 19th, 2008 at 2:31pm
Oliver,
I too believe it is a valid theory. However, I am curious just what one should infer from this knowledge (abnormal cells in hypothalamus). How does this specifically cause the cluster headaches? In my opinion, and it has become quite a humble one :) after being here (probably a good thing) I think that CH bears many unexplored similarities to bipolar illness, for which, to the best of my knowledge that illness is not blamed on abnormal brain structure. A primary thing that needs to be looked at (again in my very humble opinion) is why the illness is seasonal (so to speak) and in between the person returns to normal functioning (in the majority of cases--believe me I know not all do)--but to uncover what is causing CH that "phenomenon" needs to be looked at VERY carefully. |
Title: Re: What does your CH pain "look" like? Post by gizmo on Dec 19th, 2008 at 2:48pm
In my opinion clusters are the result of different circumstances one of them being a messed up hypothalamus (leading to wrong timing of hormone disposal and the like).
The hypothalamus would at least explain the seasoning for the episodics. I'm chronic myself and even in my episodic past I never had clusters bound to seasons - well at least not obvious ones (season in this case isn't necessarily in an annual context). Side note: I also believe that Cluster Headache as a diagnose itself isn't the whole truth. There are far too many different forms of clusters (which respond or don't respond to different treatments) to be a singular, well defined and distinguished disease. Oliver |

Title: Re: What does your CH pain "look" like? Post by Jeannie on Dec 19th, 2008 at 3:15pm
I wish I could remember where I read this... most likely here somewhere, but I have read that some feel that CH is more like a seizure disorder than a HA disorder. In our cases we experience pain rather than convulsions. I thought that this was an interesting concept.
I personally believe that if my seretonin weren't all messed up, I'd be in good shape. It seems that most of my medical issues have to do with hormones. I have had CH since I was ten... have had issues with depression since I was a teen.... as an adult I was Dxed with Fibromyalgia. If we could just fix my seretonin... I'd be perfect! ;) Jeannie |

Hey Donna, Thank you for the the info. I have read SO many times here, that people with CH are not light and sound sensitive. I was glad to read differently! I am actually afraid sometimes to admit some of my symptoms for fear of others here thinking that I don't really have CH. I am so sensitive to sound during a hit that the sound of my husband softly breathing while he sleeps even bothers me. During a cycle, driving in a car when the sun flickers from behind trees that I am passing will trigger a hit.
I was talking with Jackie and she mentioned that Blake has shadows even when not in cycle. I do too. I'm just glad to know that I'm not alone in all my symptoms that don't conform to " classic" CH. Thanks again. BTW, I don't doubt the theories. I'm so glad that someone out there is taking the time to come up with some! Someday they'll lead to a cure! Jeannie |

anybody ever seen the movie "american warewolf in london" when hes in that nurses appartment and all the sudden his face gets all streched out and his fingers grow and he rips off his clothes and within a few short minutes hes a beast. one minute your sitting there watching tv relaxing and 2 or 3 minutes later your a completely different animal. then after your hair shrinks back to normal and your claws turn back to fingernails, you wake up naked in a zoo and kids are poking you with a stick. ;D
something else i've thought about is those peta videos when they skin a live animal, then throw him down in the dirt with all his nerves exposed and he just lies there confused and terrified. |

I agree with all of that that there are similarities with SAD, seizure disorder, and there is definitely something not right with the serotonin!
It IS like you are waking up and having some kind of seizure except it is pain. Maybe some kind of brain seizure? Or at least something that feels like one. |

This was back when I was having them, so...about 8-10 years ago. Dunno if it still holds true or not. My Mom has mentioned tht watching me go through the attack, and after, reminds her of when I had seizures. She said I get the same 'blank' look when the attack starts, and afterwards, I sometimes look dazed and confused. She thought at first it was my seizures resurging after all this time without them. I don't know if it's because they're connected somehow, or what. I do know, both drain you mentally and physically. Neither is easy to recover from. It could just be due to the fact that the brain is having it's own issues that they seem similar. |
