Title: Whatcha reading?
Post by Nyteguardyan on Dec 17th, 2008 at 9:49pm
Just wondering what book everyone has open right now.

I currently have 2 open.

Hood, by Stephen R. Lawhead-a different take on Robin Hood and Celtic mythology.

Lord of the Rings, J.R.R. Tolkien-I probably don't need to elaborate.

"Don't Sleep, There Are Snakes", Daniel L Everett.  (A linguist who lived with the Piraha in the Amazon.)

"The Whistling Season" Ivan Doig.

Best,

George

(Good--another book fiend.)

"Rose Madder" by Stephen King. Abusived woman escapes her cop husband to start over in a new city but knows that her past is not behind her. Of course with Stephen King's own odd little twists. I've read it several times but it's my very favorite book so I can read it over and over again. Also in the middle of writing several exciting ones so of course there's reading and rewriting involved with them too.

Hope you feel better soon, Mosaic.

I'm reading, "Love Is A Mix Tape," at the moment, with "The Dirt" (about Motley Crue), up next.

"Exiles" (best erotic scene ever--better than "Lady Chatterley's Lover.") by Philip Caputo, author of "A Rumor of War".  But the best of my generation--including Hemingway--was Erich Maria Remarque, author of "All Quiet on the Western Front." As for Remarque—well, he knew pretty much all that was worth knowing. He also married Paulette Goddard. Many of you will have to google all three names; it will be worth your time.

I read "All Quiet on the Western Front"- a remarkable book if you are a Brit who read "Goodbye to all that" by Robert Graves first. They are kind of two books by two very similar people facing each other across the Trenches????

Stephen King wrote my favorite book of all time, The Eyes of the Dragon. I honestly couldn't tell you how many times I've read it. It's completely different than the rest of his books. And in using a "timeline," it's your first introduction to Flagg. Hmmm...

I haven't read Rose Madder, but I'll put it on the list.

And next up to bat is: Black House, by Stephen King and Peter Straub

Learning Perl (Randal L Schwartz, Tom Phoenix & brian d foy)

This book is much too exciting to describe.  It has a pretty Llama on the cover, and that's just where the fun begins.

In that case I suggest
"Programming Perl" from Larry Wall, Tom Christiansen and Jon Orwant
and
"Perl Best Practices" from Damien Conway
for the follow-up reading

Mel - what's Zicam?

I've just read The Duchess and No 1 Ladies Detective Agency. Currently having a break from reading to do my Christmas cross stitch.

Next on my list will probably be the next 7 in the series of the latter. I'm such a girl when it comes to books. I want to be transported to a fictional world where I can become completely absorbed in a story. Chick lit all the way!

I've read "The Eyes of The Dragon." It was good. Have also read "Misery" and "Cell", which was a very good one. I really do have to read some more of his. Then of course there's all the Anne Rice(vampires, witches, and Taltos oh my!), James Patterson's Maximum Ride series(another one I absolutely love about kids with wings), and then many random authors. I spend a lot of time reading in the summer and during break. It helps me write better I think. Not to mention it expands my word choice for when I'm stuck or don't like the way something I've wrote is written.

Smart girl - VERY smart.  Most well-spoken people (or well written in this case) read a wide variety of literature . . .and it shows!

Am in a "Book Club". Have just finished and argued vehemently about an autobiography by a bi-polar gay actor Stephen Fry who is very well known here but not over there- you would know his partner in comedy Hugh Laurie better I think from House.

BUT

next Book Club book is "Beloved" by Toni Morrison.

I am told that some people view her as "the conscience of America" (a rather intriguing prospect whatever it means) and Barack Obama referred to her writings as influencing aspects of his life.

Will I like this book?

Wendy....I bought "Beloved" @ a garage sale this summer, but have not read it yet.  I did read "The Bluest Eye" , also by Toni Morrison, in a college Literature class about 10 years ago, and loved it!  Let me know how you like Beloved!

I have just started a book by one of my favorite authors, Harlan Coben , "The Woods".

Happy reading all!

Hey Jeepers we need to revive our book conversations - we swapped some of the best books I've ever read and I miss your input on my reading list ALOT!

I'm re reading one of my favourite books, it just blows me away how unique it is and I can't recommend it enough. George and Felicia, I think you two in particular would love this book

The Athenian Murders by Jose Carlos Somoza
There is a twist in the tale that you won't see coming no matter what and it just.. I''ve never read anything like it. Utterly incredible book for me.

KJ - If you liked Marley and Me, try Walking Ollie (I think by Stephen Foster). It's another great one which I enjoyed - partly because the dog is the same breed as mine (greyhound cross) and it all felt so familiar. But it is still another good one for dog owners!

The novel by Kilgore Trout?   ;)  No, I've never read it, although I know of it.

Later printings I've seen list Farmer as the author.  I understand the joke fell a little flat with Vonnegut.

Finished "Rose Madder" today so Becky gave an early Christmas present: #4 of the Maximum Ride series by James Patterson which is one of my favorite! So now I'm re-reading the first three to catch myself up. After starting at about 3ish today I'm almost finished with  the second one. Merry Christmas to me! :)

Read them all. The last one took me about a day. I was sadly disappointed with the movies but I guess that was to be expected. In my opinion, Maximum Ride is much better. More action, kids with wings trying to litterally save the world. Great stuff.

Well supposedly, Farmer got Vonnegut's permission for the gag, but then Vonnegut had second thoughts.  Seems Farmer had suffered a downturn in his popularity right about that time, and Vonnegut thought that Farmer was trying to ride his coattails, so to speak.

Anyway, the book's a hoot.  It's been years since I read it, but now you've got me thinking about it, I'm going to have to try & scare up a copy & read it again!

Best regards, and have a great Christmas!
