Title: Anyone else have an MRI of neck reveal a SYRINX
Post by Iddy on Dec 22nd, 2008 at 8:47am

Hi everyone. I was just curious. When I had an MRI done of my neck to try and find out what ails me the Doc found an 8 cm SYRINX.
It is a capsule type of thing near the spinal cord and it is filled with the fluid that covers the brain and spinal column.
I'm told that it does not pose a danger to me as people can be born with it.
Wondering how common it might be. Seeing how many of us have had MRI's of the neck what better place to ask. Anything?

No.  Although I've had MRI's done, no one has ever mentioned it.

I'd never heard the term "syrinx" in this context.  I had to look it up.

The same term is used for a bird's vocal apparatus, and that's the structure that came to mind when I saw your post.  Needless to say, my first reaction was "what the heck..."   ;)

Hi Iddy.

I have never had this appear in any MRI or other CH testing I've
had done over the years.
Here is some information, hope this helps.
:)

A syrinx is a fluid-filled cavity within the spinal cord (syringomyelia) or brain stem (syringobulbia). Predisposing factors include craniocervical junction abnormalities, spinal cord trauma, and spinal cord tumors. Symptoms include flaccid weakness of the hands and arms and deficits in pain and temperature sensation in a capelike distribution over the back and neck; light touch and position and vibration sensation are not affected. Diagnosis is by MRI. Treatment includes correction of the cause and surgical procedures to drain the syrinx or otherwise open CSF flow.

Syrinxes usually result from lesions that partially obstruct CSF flow. At least ½ of syrinxes occur in patients with congenital abnormalities of the craniocervical junction (eg, herniation of cerebellar tissue into the spinal canal, called Chiari malformation), brain (eg, encephalocele), or spinal cord (eg, myelomeningocele—see Congenital Neurologic Anomalies: Brain Anomalies). For unknown reasons, these congenital abnormalities often expand during the teen or young adult years. A syrinx can also develop in patients who have a spinal cord tumor, scarring due to previous spinal trauma, or no known predisposing factors. About 30% of people with a spinal cord tumor eventually develop a syrinx.

I'm hoping to hear the result of my MRI today after the radiologist reads it. I an eager to know if C6-7 fusion is necessary I want this foreboding feeling will go away.

Thanks for the the responses everyone.
The thought of being microchipped had crossed my mind as I have been told many times I'm not of this world!
Great info King of Pain Thanx.I'm going to get a second opinion from another nuro about this thing.

Thanks Iddy,

They called on Tuesday and said I have arthritic vertebra degeneration in my entire neck.

I have to do a solumedrol taper to see if it improves the partially ruptured C6-7 disk.

I know that its coming time for fusion, but I guess like Ray, I will put it off until I cant take it any more. Problem is, I have such a high tolerance to pain that I may wait too long. I will have to have a serious sit down with the Nero and get some honest answers to better help me decide my best course of action.

Best,

Roland. ;)
