Title: Ellen's Shrinky-Dink Experiments

More experiments.  Ellen's using Shrinky-Dink to create miniatures.

She says:

"The hole on this was too small and the jaw split off. It's been put back together, although the pieces kind of swam apart while it was drying.

Horse skull and neck vertebrae study.

The top is sealed with Sculpey gloss glaze.

Bright white shrinky dinks paper (?), sharpie, gloss."

She says:

"I'm experimenting with Shrinky Dinks, which is a lot of fun to use.

Unfortunately, I got the wrong kind to use my prismacolors on, so I decided to practice with just ink illustrations.

This is the upper and mid-section of a horse foreleg, based on an illustration in the "Cyclopedia Anatomicae".

Its intended use is a pendant, although I can see other uses for it.

Sharpie, bright white 'Shrinky Dinks'. "

Best,

George

Shrinky-dinks.  Not just for Christmas ornaments anymore.  LOL

People with creative/artistic minds just blow me away.  My son is a great photographer for instance...He takes a close-up pic of my M-tank and the result is a beautiful texured weird background that I wouldn't mind using for wallpaper for my screen.

That daughter of yours is going to continue to amaze you as she gets older.   ;)

Ooooooooh - anatomical studies.  I remember those from college lo these many many years ago.

Nothing will serve her better in drawing than being familiar with the structure under the skin.  Wait until you find nude models in your home . . . . oh wait . . that's best left to the school studio, I s'pose.

The first time I saw our resident school nude model outside the studio (fully clothed) I couldn't figure out who he was.  The face was so unfamiliar . . . . ;D

Edited to add: If I recall correctly, the lids of deli containers (in which you'd get your pasta or potato salad) are just the right thickness and material for clear shrinky-dinks (which btw, were invented in the community next door to us!).

I've been working with shrinky dinks for a while...if you sand the white kind with very fine grit sandpaper, then you can use prismacolor pencils on it- it just needs the surface roughened up a bit to accept the pencil mark.

Also, they make a kind that can be run through your ink-jet printer- but you have to set it to "draft" and turn the saturation waaaayyy down or it will look too dark when it shrinks.

And another neat trick is acetone transfers; take a xeroxed or laser-printed B&W drawing or photo, lay it ink-side down on the shrinkydink, and in small areas at a time brush on a little acetone, then rub it quickly with a burnisher or the edge of a coin; the acetone melts the plastic of the ink and transfers it to the shrinkydink, which looks really nice when shrunk down.  It takes some practice to get it just right, but it's a nice effect.  :)

Charlie and Jonny - you were so deprived during childhood if you didn't have shrinky-dinks!!  This was one of the best things to do on a snowy day, along with "creepy-crawlies."  'Member those?

And Jonny - you've never swum in Lake Michigan on New Year's Day, have you??  That would explain the lack of "shrinky dink."

They didn't have Shrinky Dinks' when Charlie was youngster.  In fact, I was in my mid-teens when they were developed.

The very first SHRINKY DINKS were sold on October 17, 1973 at Brookfield Square Shopping Mall in Brookfield Wisconsin. Since that time there has been over 250 different Toy Activity and Craft Kits created and marketed.

SHRINKY DINKS SHRINK to approximately 1/3rd their original size and actually become 9 times thicker. Simply place the SHRINKY DINKS piece you created into a Home Oven or Toaster Oven for 2 magic minutes. Watch as your creation gets smaller and smaller.
It's "MAGICAL" and it's so quick and easy to do!

Can't say I had Creepy Crawlers.

I had Jarts though. Now they would have a tough time at the Comsumer Safety Commission. Neat!
