Title: method of O2 delivery
Post by robert riegelsperger on Jan 5th, 2009 at 4:44pm
From reading this board, it sounds like most people using oxygen are using it directly from a tank via a mask. I was prescribed an oxygen concentrator delivered through a nosepiece at 7 litres/min. I can crank it up to between 8-9 litres/min. It does not seem to be as efficient as getting it directly through a mask though. From what I have read here, 14litres/min is more like what you need. I use what I have and it helps if I catch it early but it does not seem to work as well this cycle. Does anyone else use one of these concentrators as opposed to a tank and mask?
Thanks, Robert

Concentrators are not really good for Ch. Not enough flow rate and we need 100% 02 not 96%. I tried them and results were 50 50.
Get a tank and a optimask. 15 lpm min.

I believe most use 02 delivered at 15 lpm to 25 lpm now.  It is also imperative to use a non-rebreather mask:  the "oxygen info" button on the left will take you to a site where you can purchase a great mask to help abort the CH attack (a 3 litre bag is more effective than the smaller ones usually provided with the NRB masks provided by med supply companies).

I do not think the concentrators can produce a high enough flow rate to quickly/effectively abort a CH attack, but others more knowledgeable will respond, I'm sure.

Someone posted a while back about monster oxygen concentrators that can produce enough 02 to flow up to 15 LPM. More importantly is the delivery system. For 02 to be effective, your lungs need to get PURE oxygen, no outside air and no exhaled air. The nasal canulas allow WAY too much outside air. If your concentrator can keep up with your breathing, while using a NON RE BREATHER MASK, it may work out for you.

If the concentrator CAN"T keep up with your breathing, I'm afraid you may not have success with it.

As the bbz already pointed out, most O2 concentrators produce 96% oxygen at their "normal" flow rate of around 5 LPM. When you crank them up higher, the concentration drops - often below 90%.

It wouldn't hurt to buy a good mask now and try it with your concentrator because you will need one anyway!  There are several good mask kits out there and I happen to like this kit very much:

Also keep in mind that tanks give you portability!
