Title: Finding joy...
Post by jon019 on Jan 10th, 2009 at 3:55am
Hello all,

Ima a hurtin unit right now and I hate it...this ch shite is robbing me of the joy of life...and I am clinging to what makes life worthwhile...today I had a wonderful reminder of why that is, and should be, just a momentary weakness...

About once a week I visit the O2 shop, where I pick up the 7 glorius e-tanks that make life possible...as a reward, I usually visit Costco on the way back home...rarely buy much, but just walking thru is a hoot.

Today, on the way out, was experiencing a kip 3 (and climbing)...all I was thinking about was the O2 tank awaiting me...was about 100 ft behind a lady with a full cart. When she got to her car she let out what appeared to be a lab-mix dog. Red, shiney coat, he was delighted to see Mom. Tail wagging furiously and a BIG smile on his face, he was ecstatic. Thing is, he was SO poised at the same time. Looked at me, greeted me, SMILED somor, then stepped aside to let me by.

Now, I don't usually speak to strangers, but was compelled to comment ,"what a nice dog". She smiled too and said, "yes he is, and SO patient, I've been gone a long time". My regret is that I didn't ask permission to pet him, am SURE it would have been given.

Anyway, and my apologies for being my usual sappy self, it really is the small stuff that makes life worthwhile. The devil IS in the details, and it doesn't have to be bad...be well my friends and rejoice in the SMALL stuff...it's bigger than we all think...

Best,

Jon

Good to hear from you, Jon--I'm only sorry to hear you're getting beat up so badly.   :(

Thanks for the reminder to find happiness in the small things.

All the best, and be well, my friend.

Sorry you're having such a hard time..... :'(

It really doesn't take much to make one happy and put a smile on our face.....if we'll just take the time to enjoy and appreciate the little things   :)

Nice post.

Love to you,
Jackie

Anyone who can't smile when a dog greets them like that ain't alive.  Good on you for seeing what was right in front of you.  Not all of us can say that.

I hope you get a break soon too...

This is another good example of how wonderful animals can make us feel. My mother in law was just admitted to an assited living facility in Nov. Over the holidays we visited several times. Each day Casie the golden retreiver and Kaley the black lab greeted us. They were service dogs that live at the home. My dog was welcome and not only greeted the dogs but spent time with several residents. One of the ladies told me how nice it was to have visitors, especially the 4 legged kind.

It is the simple things that can make our life so much nicer . I saw it too this holiday. I hope you are feeling better soon Jon! Thank you for sharing your story!

life is about the little things most of the time.  How often do we hit the lottery?  Never for me.  Yes Jon, if walking through costco makes you happy, then get your tale over their as often as possible

These days, this is one of the few remaining universal truths. Most people have a difficult time accepting compliments about themselves, nowadays they sometimes are not even comfortable if you remark about how cute their child is in passing.

But, a dog owner almost universally takes a compliment about their dog well.

Great story Jon. I always loved it when people asked to pet my dogs and never hesitate to do so myself. They give me positive energy.

THANK YOU ALL!!!!....once again humbled by the support and kindness I get here.

I think what I finally figured out is that waiting for something GREAT to happen every day, to make me happy, is a fool's dream. I may be a knothead but I'm no fool.

After one too many folks told me I looked pissed, it was time for some self evaluation and some suck it up jonboy. Lincoln said, "Most folks are just about as happy as they make up their minds up to be".
What I am doing is to find something to smile about every day...big, small, whatever (like a neat dog sayin hello, or Laurie's wonderful cat pics and captions) and replaying it on a loop until I find the next one.

Not out of the bucket yet, but I'm hanging on the rim...

Best,

Jon

Ever since Happiness heard your name,
It has been running through the streets
Trying to find you.

And several times in the last week,
God Himself has even come to my door -
Asking me for your address!

Once I said,
God,
I thought You knew everything.
Why are You asking me
Where Your lovers live?

And the Beloved replied,

Indeed, Hafiz, I do know Everything -
But it is fun playing dumb once in a while.
And I love intimate chat
And the warmth of your heart's fire.

Maybe we should make this into a song -
I think it has potential!

How does this refrain sound,
For I know it is a Truth:

Ever since Happiness heard your name,
It has been running through the streets
Trying to find you.
And several times in the last week,
God Himself has come to my door -
So sweetly asking for your address,
Wanting the beautiful warmth of your heart's fire.

-Hafiz

Jon.   The other day I was outside and it was about 60 degrees.   I heard a thunderous sound.  Turns out it was the blue angels flying overhead on their way to our airport to make arraingments for the Sept. airshow here.

The sound was marvelous....watching them fly in was exilerating...all was free.
Today I even got a call from a friend that totally made my day.

Small stuff.  Keep looking for it my friend.   ;)
