Title: Colder Than Usual Winter?
Post by purpleydog on Jan 15th, 2009 at 5:23am
Well, have the predictions come true? It's minus 13 degrees F (-25 C) here now, with a high today of 5 F (-15C) with 20 to 30 MPH winds. I doubt it warms up that much. The north has been getting hammered with snow, which just heads straight east. We have a few inches of snow from yesterday, but it's been mainly ice so far this winter. Peoria got 6 to 8 inches of snow yesterday.

The Pacific northwest has gotten a lot of snow, and it's been colder than usual there (Cathi, I hope you've gotten dug out by now). I hate to think of the temp at Potter's house. (I really don't like cold weather anymore ... BRRRR!)

What's the temp where you are? And you warm climate folks... try not to gloat too much.  ;)

Stay warm!

Edited to add, the high is now going to be -3 F. On goes another layer...

It is -34C, -29F here this morning and the same for tonight.
Looks like another couple of days of driving around on my frozen, flat spotted tires :o LOL
Also, by breathing in this crisp arctic air I can stop a shadow almost instantly. ;)

Ain't that the truth! One good thing about cold weather, feels mighty good on my eye.

I hear ya about the flat spots on the tires. Always a little more bumpy, it seems, driving when it's really cold out.

I never noticed the sound of driving on sub-zero snow until a transplanted Floridian pointed it out to me.

It's really a creepy sound!

It is so cold, they canceled school!!  No snow or ice on the ground.  Last weeks it was in the 50's and beautiful, next week it is going to be in the 40's.  y'all picked the coldest week of the season for a meet and greet.  This is not normal weather here.

DITTO!!!

As for the cold, it's -20 currently with a windchill of -42.  They said on the news yesterday this is the coldest it's been in a decade.  a DECADE??  Ohforpetesake, that's only 10 years ago, they act like it's been 80 or something.  Yesterday it got to, oh I dunno, -7, and they acted like it was the apocolypse. ::)

We have a rule here, it's only really cold if it's hard to breathe outside, otherwise it's "not bad".  LOL

The worlds temperature has been flat for a few years, and started dropping in 2008.

Temps here in NY have been at 0F for 3 days. This is not to bad, we have had morning temps as low as -30F before. I guess we are in the tropical zone.

I agree with Mel - this isn't so bad . . . . -13, sunny, kinda pretty from inside with long underwear and a turtleneck.  I've seen a lot worse.

Like the day in 1982 (-26 before windchills) when a friend got married and the tires of her "getaway car" were frozen to the pavement.  Now THAT'S cold.

The schools closed yesterday before the cold weather even arrived . . .pshaw!

Schools were called off for today, well before the last bell rang yesterday.

-20 °F
Clear
Windchill: -40 °F

And "global warming"?  Kiss my ass...

Something tells me they may call off again tomorrow, but then that is wishful thinking.

It's 29 degrees F this morning.  Very gray--there's a temperature inversion in the valley right now, with the colder air bottled up in the lower elevations.  Supposed to break up later in the week.  That being said, I see that it's 9 degrees F in McCall, two hours to the north of us.

It's been a pretty average winter--a bit more snow than usual, but not as much as last year.

Best,

George

Thanks Lake Erie! They say it's on the edge of freezing a bit which will probably ease up on the lake-effect. It's going to be sub-zero here....it's 2 at the moment and wind chills are supposed to be in double-diget minus readings...for a couple of days.

Brrrrrrrr. it's been a chilly winter...they said it would be a bruiser.

Cathi, it's all relative... when you aren't used to it, it can be damned cold. I know this has been an unusual winter for you all, and I know it's a pain! Just glad I didn't move this season... the idea for us is to be in more constant temps, and escape the snow and cold winters.

I'm glad it's warmed up to normal temps for you. Seems once you get that initial chill, it seems to stay with you. I've been wearing an extra layer under my shirts (up to 4 layers now :-? ), and I'm staying warm. Lingering outside is not an option, though, ha ha.

I got off work today, and it was -5 F. I'll tell ya, before I got in the wind, it felt almost balmy! It's now -10 F, and will be -17F in the morning. Supposed to warm up to almost 30F on Saturday, though. Heatwave!  :D

Jimmers, great poem! And so true. Especially about your nose freezing shut.  ;) May I send it to my boss? With full credit attached.

You in the frozen tundra could move to California, ya know.   I hear there is a mass exodus of folks moving outta there.   No really there are. (not just me and Jim)

It is the state with the most people moving OUT.   But the weather won't freeze yer nose hairs.

If you move to SoCal...you are within an hour of desert, moutains, ocean and big city life.

In a few months I will have a 3 bedroom, 2 bath, 2-car attached garage.... up for rent if anyone's interested.   ;)

No snow blower necessary.

Joe, stop by an Outfitters Shop on the way to St. Louis and get yourself some long underwear, seriously! ;)

Linda, one of our friends we ride with is from California but he lives here now due to his work. He went back to CA for the X-Mas holidays and decided to drive the Trans Canada Highway from BC to Ontario, Blizzard conditions for most of his trip.
He arrived safe and sound yesterday but was bundled up like a Eskimo!  ;D ;D ;D

The cold is starting to get here in NY now. -18F this morning. Of course school wasn't closed or delayed. Maybe it will hit -30F tomorrow. That is when cars that aren't plugged in can tend to refuse to start.

My daughters horse back riding lesson will probably be canceled tomorrow, they don't have lessons when it gets lower than 10F in the barn.

I called the animal hospital this morning and the vet tech reported that he is doing much better this morning, thank goodness.

Please, please be sure to take good care of your animals during this freezing weather.  Just because they have fur does not mean they can all endure the cold temps.

Spot on, Paul!  No punn intended.

If the current sunspot cycle lasts a couple of years people will be fighting for food instead of oil.  Few realize that the stockpile of food in the world only could last a few months.

Perhasps the politicians can legislate and pass laws preventing the sun from withholding it's spots.  LOL
