Title: Another question-sorry
Post by Molly on Jan 15th, 2009 at 5:28pm
Sorry to keep buggin ya'all. Mike went to the neuroligist today to get the refill for O2 (he had not been back since 2006), but not really interested in going back to the drug route as he has tried them all and didn't like the side effects and the O2 has seemed to be the best abortive. But... the doc perscribed Indomethicin. Any experience with that? He said he has been getting some good results but I have not heard it referred to here on the board at all.
Anything you could all share would be super appreciated-again...
Thanks for being here.

It really isn't a drug for CH's, but is effective for a different head condition called CPH. It's just a very powerful non-steroidal anti inflammatory.

I was a heavy user of Indo, many years ago. If I took a huge dose (enough to make me dizzy) at the first hint of an attack it did help. We have one strange character ( ;D) on this board who used the suppository version for many years.

Big problem is that it will burn a hole in his stomach real fast. Don't get your hopes up.........

First of all never apologize for asking questions.  That's what we're all here for.  Navigating all the information around here can be daunting and it is important to ask and someone will steer you to the correct place.

Indomethacin is great for a sub-type of headache...Paroxysmal
Hemicrania but won't help Cluster headaches.  If he does take it just to try...make sure he takes an antacid along with it as it is hard on the stomach.

So it is the same as the anti-inflammatory Indocin? That was my original first reaction. I will pass on your information. He already has a messed up stomach so I am not sure this would be a good solution for him. Maybe we will try the Melatonin first to see if we get any good results from that.
The O2 seems to be losing effectiveness as the headaches are peaking. He is at 15 LPM but still using a regular mask. Working on getting a non-rebreather mask.

Thanks again.

Yes, Indocin and Indomethacin are the same and should not be taken by someone with a more sensitive stomach.

Don't wait around for the right mask, just buy one! There are multiple sources, see the Oxygen Info button on the left of your screen. It's actually an advertisement for a company that has them.

I happen to use these guys:

Some will argue against me, but I would also suggest a higher flow regulator like 25 LPM. That alone made O2 a miracle for me.

My DH has a really bad stomach/GI system, and that's an understatement.  The new neuro wanted to rule out paroxysmal hemicrania.  He prescribed Sucralfate (old drug for duodenal ulcers and GERD) along with the indomethacin.  Gary took it 1/2 hour before the indo (each dose, 3x per day), and it went OK for the 9 days he was on the indo (he doesn't have PH).

Jeeze, Molly....if he already has a messed up stomach, his Dr. should have known that.   Grrrrrrr.  >:(

Please DO NOT...I repeat , do not buy a non-rebreather mask.   Send me your full nam,e and address and I will send you several.  No charge.   I do this all the time..

I'm sorry, you're new.  Send me your address in a personal message not here.  At the bottom of my post is a "PM" box...hit it and you can reply to me there without it appearing to everyone.
