Congratulations my American friends on this historic day that inspires the globe.
The USA has come a long way since the half a century since Rosa Parks stood up (I read a beautiful book on her in my teens).

With lots of love from the Netherlands.

Here is the inaugural address:

OBAMA: My fellow citizens:

I stand here today humbled by the task before us, grateful for the trust you have bestowed, mindful of the sacrifices borne by our ancestors. I thank President Bush for his service to our nation, as well as the generosity and cooperation he has shown throughout this transition.

Forty-four Americans have now taken the presidential oath. The words have been spoken during rising tides of prosperity and the still waters of peace. Yet, every so often the oath is taken amidst gathering clouds and raging storms. At these moments, America has carried on not simply because of the skill or vision of those in high office, but because we the people have remained faithful to the ideals of our forebears, and true to our founding documents.
So it has been. So it must be with this generation of Americans. That we are in the midst of crisis is now well understood. Our nation is at war, against a far-reaching network of violence and hatred. Our economy is badly weakened, a consequence of greed and irresponsibility on the part of some, but also our collective failure to make hard choices and prepare the nation for a new age. Homes have been lost; jobs shed; businesses shuttered. Our health care is too costly; our schools fail too many; and each day brings further evidence that the ways we use energy strengthen our adversaries and threaten our planet.

These are the indicators of crisis, subject to data and statistics. Less measurable but no less profound is a sapping of confidence across our land — a nagging fear that America's decline is inevitable, and that the next generation must lower its sights.

Today I say to you that the challenges we face are real. They are serious and they are many. They will not be met easily or in a short span of time. But know this, America — they will be met.
On this day, we gather because we have chosen hope over fear, unity of purpose over conflict and discord.

On this day, we come to proclaim an end to the petty grievances and false promises, the recriminations and worn out dogmas, that for far too long have strangled our politics.

We remain a young nation, but in the words of scripture, the time has come to set aside childish things. The time has come to reaffirm our enduring spirit; to choose our better history; to carry forward that precious gift, that noble idea, passed on from generation to generation: the God-given promise that all are equal, all are free and all deserve a chance to pursue their full measure of happiness.

In reaffirming the greatness of our nation, we understand that greatness is never a given. It must be earned. Our journey has never been one of shortcuts or settling for less. It has not been the path for the faint-hearted — for those who prefer leisure over work, or seek only the pleasures of riches and fame. Rather, it has been the risk-takers, the doers, the makers of things — some celebrated but more often men and women obscure in their labor, who have carried us up the long, rugged path towards prosperity and freedom.

For us, they packed up their few worldly possessions and traveled across oceans in search of a new life.
For us, they toiled in sweatshops and settled the West; endured the lash of the whip and plowed the hard earth.
For us, they fought and died, in places like Concord and Gettysburg; Normandy and Khe Sahn.

Time and again these men and women struggled and sacrificed and worked till their hands were raw so that we might live a better life. They saw America as bigger than the sum of our individual ambitions; greater than all the differences of birth or wealth or faction.

This is the journey we continue today. We remain the most prosperous, powerful nation on Earth. Our workers are no less productive than when this crisis began. Our minds are no less inventive, our goods and services no less needed than they were last week or last month or last year. Our capacity remains undiminished. But our time of standing pat, of protecting narrow interests and putting off unpleasant decisions — that time has surely passed. Starting today, we must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and begin again the work of remaking America.
For everywhere we look, there is work to be done. The state of the economy calls for action, bold and swift, and we will act — not only to create new jobs, but to lay a new foundation for growth. We will build the roads and bridges, the electric grids and digital lines that feed our commerce and bind us together. We will restore science to its rightful place, and wield technology's wonders to raise health care's quality and lower its cost. We will harness the sun and the winds and the soil to fuel our cars and run our factories. And we will transform our schools and colleges and universities to meet the demands of a new age. All this we can do. And all this we will do.
uggest that our system cannot tolerate too many big plans. Their memories are short. For they have forgotten what this country has already done; what free men and women can achieve when imagination is joined to common purpose, and necessity to courage.

What the cynics fail to understand is that the ground has shifted beneath them — that the stale political arguments that have consumed us for so long no longer apply. The question we ask today is not whether our government is too big or too small, but whether it works — whether it helps families find jobs at a decent wage, care they can afford, a retirement that is dignified. Where the answer is yes, we intend to move forward. Where the answer is no, programs will end. And those of us who manage the public's dollars will be held to account — to spend wisely, reform bad habits, and do our business in the light of day — because only then can we restore the vital trust between a people and their government.
Nor is the question before us whether the market is a force for good or ill. Its power to generate wealth and expand freedom is unmatched, but this crisis has reminded us that without a watchful eye, the market can spin out of control — and that a nation cannot prosper long when it favors only the prosperous. The success of our economy has always depended not just on the size of our gross domestic product, but on the reach of our prosperity; on our ability to extend opportunity to every willing heart — not out of charity, but because it is the surest route to our common good.

As for our common defense, we reject as false the choice between our safety and our ideals. Our founding fathers, faced with perils we can scarcely imagine, drafted a charter to assure the rule of law and the rights of man, a charter expanded by the blood of generations. Those ideals still light the world, and we will not give them up for expedience's sake. And so to all other peoples and governments who are watching today, from the grandest capitals to the small village where my father was born: know that America is a friend of each nation and every man, woman, and child who seeks a future of peace and dignity, and that we are ready to lead once more.

Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please.

Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.
We are the keepers of this legacy. Guided by these principles once more, we can meet those new threats that demand even greater effort — even greater cooperation and understanding between nations. We will begin to responsibly leave Iraq to its people, and forge a hard-earned peace in Afghanistan. With old friends and former foes, we will work tirelessly to lessen the nuclear threat, and roll back the specter of a warming planet. We will not apologize for our way of life, nor will we waver in its defense, and for those who seek to advance their aims by inducing terror and slaughtering innocents, we say to you now that our spirit is stronger and cannot be broken; you cannot outlast us, and we will defeat you.

For we know that our patchwork heritage is a strength, not a weakness. We are a nation of Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus — and non-believers. We are shaped by every language and culture, drawn from every end of this Earth; and because we have tasted the bitter swill of civil war and segregation, and emerged from that dark chapter stronger and more united, we cannot help but believe that the old hatreds shall someday pass; that the lines of tribe shall soon dissolve; that as the world grows smaller, our common humanity shall reveal itself; and that America must play its role in ushering in a new era of peace.

To the Muslim world, we seek a new way forward, based on mutual interest and mutual respect. To those leaders around the globe who seek to sow conflict, or blame their society's ills on the West — know that your people will judge you on what you can build, not what you destroy. To those who cling to power through corruption and deceit and the silencing of dissent, know that you are on the wrong side of history; but that we will extend a hand if you are willing to unclench your fist.

To the people of poor nations, we pledge to work alongside you to make your farms flourish and let clean waters flow; to nourish starved bodies and feed hungry minds. And to those nations like ours that enjoy relative plenty, we say we can no longer afford indifference to suffering outside our borders; nor can we consume the world's resources without regard to effect. For the world has changed, and we must change with it.

As we consider the road that unfolds before us, we remember with humble gratitude those brave Americans who, at this very hour, patrol far-off deserts and distant mountains. They have something to tell us today, just as the fallen heroes who lie in Arlington whisper through the ages. We honor them not only because they are guardians of our liberty, but because they embody the spirit of service; a willingness to find meaning in something greater than themselves. And yet, at this moment — a moment that will define a generation — it is precisely this spirit that must inhabit us all.
For as much as government can do and must do, it is ultimately the faith and determination of the American people upon which this nation relies. It is the kindness to take in a stranger when the levees break, the selflessness of workers who would rather cut their hours than see a friend lose their job which sees us through our darkest hours. It is the firefighter's courage to storm a stairway filled with smoke, but also a parent's willingness to nurture a child, that finally decides our fate.

Our challenges may be new. The instruments with which we meet them may be new. But those values upon which our success depends — hard work and honesty, courage and fair play, tolerance and curiosity, loyalty and patriotism — these things are old. These things are true. They have been the quiet force of progress throughout our history. What is demanded then is a return to these truths. What is required of us now is a new era of responsibility — a recognition, on the part of every American, that we have duties to ourselves, our nation, and the world, duties that we do not grudgingly accept but rather seize gladly, firm in the knowledge that there is nothing so satisfying to the spirit, so defining of our character, than giving our all to a difficult task.
This is the price and the promise of citizenship.

This is the source of our confidence — the knowledge that God calls on us to shape an uncertain destiny.

This is the meaning of our liberty and our creed — why men and women and children of every race and every faith can join in celebration across this magnificent mall, and why a man whose father less than sixty years ago might not have been served at a local restaurant can now stand before you to take a most sacred oath.

So let us mark this day with remembrance, of who we are and how far we have traveled. In the year of America's birth, in the coldest of months, a small band of patriots huddled by dying campfires on the shores of an icy river. The capital was abandoned. The enemy was advancing. The snow was stained with blood. At a moment when the outcome of our revolution was most in doubt, the father of our nation ordered these words be read to the people:

Let it be told to the future world ... that in the depth of winter, when nothing but hope and virtue could survive...that the city and the country, alarmed at one common danger, came forth to meet (it)."

America, in the face of our common dangers, in this winter of our hardship, let us remember these timeless words. With hope and virtue, let us brave once more the icy currents, and endure what storms may come. Let it be said by our children's children that when we were tested we refused to let this journey end, that we did not turn back nor did we falter; and with eyes fixed on the horizon and God's grace upon us, we carried forth that great gift of freedom and delivered it safely to future generations.

Welcome President Obama.

I did not vote for our new President and I am sure there will be actions he will take that I will disagree with and yes, some that I will agree with.

That being said, I wish the new President of my country all the wisdom, knowledge and good judgement that the job demands. He has my support and my respectful disagreement when we differ.

If nothing else, today shows that a peaceful transfer of power is one of my country's strong points. The citizens of the United States do not agree on many things, but like every other citizen, I still stand in awe when the torch is past peacefully from one leader to another.

I didn't vote for him either (please contain your shock) but I wish him and his cabinet the best.  Perhaps this will be the best presidency ever, I'm willing to accept that as a possibility.

During the election cycle, I was loud and obnoxious in my opposition to a potential Obama presidency, but now he is the President and he deserves my support and respect.  It is a tough pill to swallow for a conservative like me, but the peaceful transition of power to a newly elected administration is a luxury that few countries enjoy, and it is something that I value above ideology.

And that's the last political post I'll be making on this site for as long as I can hold my tongue.

This is probably the coolest part of our system of government.  We don't take the former leaders out and shoot them or loot the White House when the old leader leaves.

The peaceful transition of power is a joy to behold - whether you voted for the incoming leader or not.

I didn't vote for him either.  However....

What this country has proven with this election, is that it is more than just time for change, but it's voice has been heard that it is ready for change.

Change of a magnatude never before seen on the poarches of the White House before.  In the sight of the monument dedicated to the Presdent who's dream was to free the slaves, the Lincoln Monument was directly across from that historic spot where our President took that oath today.

Mr. Lincoln, from wherever his soul resides....in the proud and stoic manner he was known for, was shedding his own tear today.

It hard enough to take this office in times of prosperity and peace.  But for THIS man, THIS day, and at THIS time in history to take up the seat of the most powerful man in this country is a very couragous act.

I wish President Obama the wisdom, courage, foresight and insight to exact the change he promised, and to temper his power with humility and justice for the people he serves.

While Lowery certainly made sense as a speaker for this occasion, his speech seems like it was written 40 years ago and quite inappropriate for today.  Today should have been a day to celebrate a new leader and a day to celebrate a moment long overdue in this country.

I agree completely with what Jonny said, as I too did not vote for him but plan on supporting him and standing behind him.

God bless the United States of America and our new President Barack Obama.

The "Real" message here is not the false hopes of some, but the dreams of the many.

Today makrks the tide of a new beginning.  Not a magic wand moment, not an erasure of my rent or your mortgage or the the end of the price we all pay at the pump.

This day is not the be all and end all of the struggle.  But it IS the day when new ideas, and ideals are the set as the coals to a new fire.

This country has needed change for a very long time, and this DAY is the beginning of that change. It's not the end of it....

To think President Obama will right all the wrongs is a pipe dream, but today has started the surge.  To think that one Presidential term can turn everything around in 4 years?  Another Dream, but today has started the effort.

This Nation has proved it wants and is ready for change.  Be part of it or fight it.  That choice is yours.  I'll embrace change.

I love you all.  And today begins a journey on a course never before walked, nor even heard of.

Let President Obama prove his worth wiith open hearts and minds.  America elected him.  Now let him prove he can deliver.

As others here, I did not vote for President Obama.  I have serious disagreements with his political philosophy, but the people have spoken, and I will graciously abide with their decision.  He will have my prayers and the hope that his presidency is a success, because his success is needed for my country to thrive.

That being said, I also hold the right to be loyal opposition when I believe he is wrong.  The key word there is loyal.  I will laud him when I believe him to be right as quickly as I will criticize when I believe him to be wrong.

My biggest fear for his success is the unreasonable expectations he will be held up to by the media.  After all of the nauseating coverage of the upcoming inauguration during the last week I fully expected he would walk across the Potomac to be inaugurated.  What will be reaction be when he is not able to fulfill all the desires of the masses and the promises he has made them?

I'm a geezer and remember Orval Faubus. I was 11 when Ike nationalized the National Guard. Back then, nobody we knew was on the right side of that event but tmes have changed after 52 years. It was wonderful listening to one of the students from that time being interviewed tonight. Never did I think I'd see an African American where Obama is in my lifetime. I'm stunned but pretty proud of us.

Along with the more substantive ideas in his speech; one of my very favorite lines is when he said: "we will restore science to its rightful place." Whew.....finally!

God, we all need help. Here's praying he's up to it. Gotta hope.

My friend James wrote this... he's a smart cookie:

During the most expensive inauguration in the history of the United States, Barack Obama spoke eloquently of the "sacrifices borne by our ancestors". As he glorified those who had "sacrificed and worked till their hands were raw" because they "saw America as bigger than the sum of our individual ambitions", I began to wonder "What will Barack Obama sacrifice to make a better America?". The answer is of course - you.

When Barack Obama speaks of sacrifice, he is not talking about himself, he is talking about We The People. Barack Obama will gladly sacrifice you to fulfill the greater good, because the greater good is the beginning and the end of his moral system. It is the moral philosophy of altruism, the philosophy that glorifies extreme cases as the epitome of virtue. It is the philosophy that says sacrifice is not merely giving, sacrifice is giving up more to get less. Obama hailed the extreme case of "the firefighter's courage to storm a stairway filled with smoke", the ultimate sacrifice of a person's life for the life of an unknown stranger, because this is the centerpiece of his moral bankruptcy. It is only as a sacrificial lamb that the altruist can truly be virtuous.

I am reminded of the following quote from a well known, but long since dead American:

"It only stands to reason that where there's sacrifice, there's someone collecting the sacrificial offerings. Where there's service, there is someone being served. The man who speaks to you of sacrifice is speaking of slaves and masters, and intends to be the master. "

There is nothing that politicians say that doesn't have a lot of staging. You'll find Obama has the best staging team around him in decades. You will also find that in comparison to our recent masters,  he likes Americans as well as America.

Do all Americans truly have a yearning to fundamentally "remake" our nation? There must be a subversive minority out there that still believes the United States — even with its imperfections and sporadic recessions — is, in context, still a wildly prosperous and free country worth preserving.

His staging team includes MSNBC, ABC, NBC and CBS as well as almost every print media outlet in the country.  It's a regular Kool-Aid-fest.  The coverage of this ascension, beautification, whatever you want to call it, was nauseating.  Journalistic integrity is dead.  I can't even count how many times I heard the phrase "It gave me chills" coming from journalists.  It's like mass-hypnosis.  And I'm evil because I ain't falling for it.

The fact that he keeps hammering home the 'fact' that we are in the most desperate times EVER just kills me.  Fear mongering at best, outright lies at the worst.  The economy isn't nearly as bad as when Carter was in office, for example.  Anybody here remember 21% mortgage interest?  I do.  anybody here remember 10.5% unemployment?  I do.  This isn't nearly as bad as it was back then, but THANK OBAMA we have the annointed one to lead us out of it.

Also of interest, Big Bill Broonzy also wrote the song, "Key To The Highway".  A cool version of this song can be found on the Derek and The Dominos Layla album.

When Bush was sworn in the media said "A nation devided"

Now they say "Obama will save us"

WTF?    ::)

On departing... Bush wasn't thrilled with his performance... I nearly choked when he said  during one of his final press conferences "I guess a mission accomplished sign wasn't such a great idea" Everyone seems to be waiting to see how his presidency will be seen in history. I guess that one will be left up to interpretation.

hmmm... I watch lots of news, FOX, CNN, NBC, CBS, ABC, ...I can't recall any of the anchors or newscasters saying... "OBAMA WILL SAVE US". On the contrary, if anything, they all seem to be saying the opposite.  It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that the mess that we're in today is going to take more than ten years to fix.

I do have a prediction though... sometime in about a year and a half or two years from now when the shit from our current economic mess really hits the fan.. I Guarantee that there will be a deafening roar from the left of how Obama is not doing a good job and how this is all somehow his fault.

That is just plain and simple politics... and of course the expected rhetoric from those who will be campaigning in  2012.

Yep just two more years until the nightmare of campaigning will begin again.  <shudder>

I would love to see the constitution amended to change the terms of office for president from two, four year terms to one six year term. It seems that two years are always wasted on campaigning anyway...

with warm regards,
Tony

The media are all in the tank for Obama. Like the Kennedys, he's fun...not the exactly the same but fun nonetheless. It will be interesting to see his effect on consumer psychology.

By the way, Carter presided over inflation which is much less scary that what we are heading for more every day: Deflation....far more dangerous. Obama's braintrust is right.

To quote the rock opera "Jesus Christ Super Star"......

You have set them all on fire,
They think they've found the new messiah,
And they'll hurt you when they find they're wrong.....

I've studied the man a bit and I actually like him, Not his policies, the man himself. (Very hard for a Republican to say!!!!).....I just don't see how he can part the seas...anything less and the public will be disappointed.

Obama made 510 promises during the presidential campaign. A St. Petersburgh Newspaper is keeping a tally on these 510 promises. I understand that as an american I will support him as my president BUT I will agree to disagree that he is what the country needs. Because I worked in the media for twenty plus years I know that they will not make it appear that he failed. I myself am prepared for a very bumpy road especially in the closing of Gitmo and his unbelievable stance on abortion. Socialism and democracy do not mix well and WE will be the guinea pigs on this experiment. The inaugural love-in is now over--with a sociopath like emmanuel advising Obama--I would suggest alot of Church going for ALL americans.

Also Geitner ( spell check) was advised in 2006 that he owed four years of specific taxes but because two of the years were outside of the three years of jurisdiction the IRS could only force him to pay two years. He paid the two years in 2006. It wasn't until November 2008 that he paid the other two years. Is this guy a moron or alittle bankrupt on moral issues. He also has been in New York for several years--Fed--He didn't know what was going on?!!? My vote would be pass on this schlub. If it was a republican the media--specifically the New York Times would be calling for his execution.

Personally I think it would be kinda cool if they did it the way Canada does....

6 weeks campaigning.  You either get off your rear and learn who/what/where/how your candidate stands or you vote based soley on emotion and media - and suffer the consequences.

The thing is that McCain is a great guy and should have been president in 2000. It's a shame but the far right cultural warriors ran away screaming back then from his possible candidacy because they were "unsure" of his stances on narrow social issues that the GOP have used to win elections. Hence: George Bush, who is responsible for the near destruction of his own party and is now as welcome at party events as the plague.

Republicans that relied on social issues only, got their clocks cleaned in 2006 and 2008. This stuff and lunatic ideas on evolution and science have wrecked poliltics for about 25 years. Now I'm all for it though. Keep it up. Before this stuff was hard on the left but now it's wrecking only the far right. Young people are tired of it. Relying on this narrow crap is why someone as deserving as John McCain lost. Having to play to this group is how you get stuck with lightweights like Sarah Palin.

Keep it up. It works for me.

Charlie,

I think McCain lost for a lot of reasons, but mostly because he did not come across as a real leader when compared to Obama.  By the time it mattered, Obama's followers included all of the main media outlets (domestic *and* foreign), so he was, by definition, already a real leader.  McCain had lukewarm support to begin with, and it never got much better.

As for the cause of the destruction of the Republican Party, we disagree.  I blame their loss of support on their complete abandonment of the principles of conservative government.  That covers a lot more ground than social issues.  Spending is out of control, and the entire power structure in DC is as corrupt as any mob or gang in the world (on both sides of the aisle).

History will show, the perfect storm for a huge shift to the left is already in progress.  I wonder how far it will shift, and I wonder how long before any opposition to it materializes.

If they just keep printing trillions of dollars to 'bail' us out of the current mess, none of this is going to matter much...

Dick Morris is a former adviser to the Clintons. A democrat.

BEWARE OBAMA’S TROJAN HORSE
DickMorris.com ^ | 01.22.2009 | Dick Morris And Eileen McGann

Now that Obama is the president, fasten your seat belts. During his first year in office, and particularly during his first hundred days, we are about to witness the most prodigious output of legislation since 1981-2 (under Reagan), 1964-5 (under Johnson), and 1933-36 (under Roosevelt). The combination of top heavy Democratic majorities in Congress and a mood of public fear bordering on panic over the financial crisis and the looming depression will speed his legislation through a compliant Senate and House.

We will enter his Administration as the United States, buoyed by an aggressive free market economy. We will exit his first year - and even the first hundred days - as France, burdened with massive government regulation, a vast public sector, and permanent middle class entitlements. And Obama will take care to arrange things so that massive and permanent political change accompanies his and protects his legislative achievements in the future.

He will call this radical change a stimulus package. He will dress up a generation of liberal priorities as necessary steps to fight the economic crisis. His programs and policies won’t do much to end the depression. It will end only after the massive burden of debt is lifted from the shoulders of American and foreign households and companies, a process which will take years. At most, his stimulus will act as methadone while we withdraw from our debt addiction, mitigating the pain, smoothing over the trauma, and soothing our system.

But Obama’s strategy is to hide inside the Trojan Horse of stimulus an army of radical measures to change America permanently.

The most pernicious of his proposals will be the massive Make Work Pay refundable tax credit. Dressed up as a tax cut, it will be a national welfare program, guaranteeing a majority of American households an annual check to “refund” taxes they never paid. And it will eliminate the need for about 20% of American households to pay income taxes, lifting the proportion that need not do so to a majority of the voting population. Unlike the Bush stimulus checks, this new program will be a permanent entitlement, a part of our budget that can only go up and never down. Politically, it will transform a majority of Americans from taxpayers, anxious to hold down government spending, into tax eaters, eager to reap new benefits.

The huge spending in his stimulus package will create a budget deficit topping one trillion dollars. Ronald Reagan cut taxes to raise the deficit to stop liberals in future years from increasing spending. Obama will raise spending to raise the deficit to stop conservatives in future years from cutting taxes. As he funds every liberal dream - from alternative energy production to infrastructure renovation to more federal revenue sharing - he will force a massive expansion in the size of government for a decade to come. If the proportion of our $14 trillion GDP absorbed by the public sector increases by $1 trillion dollars, it will mean that government’s share will rise from its current 33% to about 40%, bringing us close to the United Kingdom’s ratio. If Obama adds a major expansion of health care to the mix, the proportion could reach into the mid-forties, French and German territory.

And Obama will likely use the Trojan Horse of stimulus to make a down payment on health care reform, expanding public coverage of those now uninsured dramatically. Likely, he will initially use the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) as his vehicle. He will ask the same pool of doctors and nurses and the same amount of medical equipment to take on the care of almost 50 million more people, necessitating rationing of medical services. Those too old, too sick, or with bad habits like smoking, may find themselves fenced off from good medical care, even if they can pay for it themselves.

While he is making these major changes, Obama will permanently alter our politics by taking three steps designed to alter the political balance:

a) He will set illegal immigrants on a path to citizenship

b) He’ll pass the card check voting system for unionization, raising the unionized share of our economy

c) He will crack down on talk radio through requirements either for equal time or for local ownership and control - or both.

Most likely, Obama’s inability to tame the depression will erode his popularity during his first two years in office. But, by then, his proposals will be statutes. The fiscal parameters, the middle class’ expectations of no taxes and government handouts, and the demographics of our electorate will be changed forever.

I see Dick Morris really did go off the reservation. I haven't followed him lately. He used to pop up on Fox Noise now and then making a nuisance out of himself. Is he still there or somewhere else? He reminds me of Dennis Miller of late.

You'll find Obama a lot more centrist that described by Morris. Anway, all it takes is one Senator to block legislation for months. Lots of civil rights and great society programs got stuck for months because of it. Obama knows better. The real secret of Obama is that he probably has the sharpest Washington legislative advisors since FDR...maybe ever.

It wouldn't surprise me to hear something about the fairness doctrine though. I'm not sure it's workable and likely political suicide. Talk radio screechers wouldn't lay down for it.

REMARKS BY THE PRESIDENT IN WELCOMING SENIOR STAFF AND CABINET SECRETARIES TO THE WHITE HOUSE

1:18 P.M. EST
THE PRESIDENT: Hello, everybody. Please be seated. Still getting used to that whole thing. (Laughter.) Please be seated. Thank you so much. I wanted to get everyone together on the first day to welcome you to the White House.

From our vantage point yesterday you couldn't help but be inspired by the sight of Americans as far as the eye could see. They were there because they believe this is a moment of great change in America, a time for reinvigorating our democracy and remaking our country. They've entrusted all of us with a great responsibility. And so today I'd like to talk with you about our responsibility to keep that trust.

In a few minutes I'm going to be issuing some of the first executive orders and directives of my presidency. And these steps are aimed at establishing firm rules of the road for my administration and all who serve in it, and to help restore that faith in government, without which we cannot deliver the changes we were sent here to make -- from rebuilding our economy and ensuring that anyone who is willing to work and find a well-paying job, to protecting and defending the United States, and promoting peace and security.

However long we are keepers of the public trust we should never forget that we are here as public servants and public service is a privilege. It's not about advantaging yourself. It's not about advancing your friends or your corporate clients. It's not about advancing an ideological agenda or the special interests of any organization. Public service is, simply and absolutely, about advancing the interests of Americans.

The men and women in this room understand this, and that's why you're here. All of you are committed to building a more responsible, more accountable government. And part of what that means is making sure that we're spending precious tax dollars wisely and cutting costs wherever possible.

During this period of economic emergency, families are tightening their belts, and so should Washington. And that's why I'm instituting a pay freeze on the salaries of my senior White House staff. Some of the people in this room will be affected by the pay freeze, and I want you to know that I appreciate your willingness to agree to it, recognizing that it's what's required of you at this moment. It's a mark of your commitment to public service.

But the American people deserve more than simply an assurance that those who are coming to Washington will serve their interests. They also deserve to know that there are rules on the books to keep it that way. They deserve a government that is truly of, by, and for the people. As I often said during the campaign, we need to make the White House the people's house. And we need to close the revolving door that lets lobbyists come into government freely, and lets them use their time in public service as a way to promote their own interests over the interests of the American people when they leave.

So today we are taking a major step towards fulfilling this campaign promise. The executive order on ethics I will sign shortly represents a clean break from business as usual. As of today, lobbyists will be subject to stricter limits than under any other administration in history. If you are a lobbyist entering my administration, you will not be able to work on matters you lobbied on, or in the agencies you lobbied during the previous two years. When you leave government, you will not be able to lobby my administration for as long as I am President. And there will be a ban on gifts by lobbyists to anyone serving in the administration, as well.

Now, the new rules on lobbying alone, no matter how tough, are not enough to fix a broken system in Washington. That's why I'm also setting new rules that govern not just lobbyists, but all those who have been selected to serve in my administration.
If you are enlisting in government service, you will have to commit in writing to rules limiting your role for two years in matters involving people you used to work with, and barring you from any attempt to influence your former government colleagues for two years after you leave. And you will receive an ethics briefing on what is required of you to make sure that our government is serving the people's interests, and nobody else's -- a briefing, I'm proud to say, I was the first member of this administration to receive last week.

But the way to make a government responsible is not simply to enlist the services of responsible men and women, or to sign laws that ensure that they never stray. The way to make government responsible is to hold it accountable. And the way to make government accountable is make it transparent so that the American people can know exactly what decisions are being made, how they're being made, and whether their interests are being well served.

The directives I am giving my administration today on how to interpret the Freedom of Information Act will do just that. For a long time now, there's been too much secrecy in this city. The old rules said that if there was a defensible argument for not disclosing something to the American people, then it should not be disclosed. That era is now over. Starting today, every agency and department should know that this administration stands on the side not of those who seek to withhold information but those who seek to make it known.

To be sure, issues like personal privacy and national security must be treated with the care they demand. But the mere fact that you have the legal power to keep something secret does not mean you should always use it. The Freedom of Information Act is perhaps the most powerful instrument we have for making our government honest and transparent, and of holding it accountable. And I expect members of my administration not simply to live up to the letter but also the spirit of this law.

I will also hold myself as President to a new standard of openness. Going forward, anytime the American people want to know something that I or a former President wants to withhold, we will have to consult with the Attorney General and the White House Counsel, whose business it is to ensure compliance with the rule of law. Information will not be withheld just because I say so. It will be withheld because a separate authority believes my request is well grounded in the Constitution.

Let me say it as simply as I can: Transparency and the rule of law will be the touchstones of this presidency.

Our commitment to openness means more than simply informing the American people about how decisions are made. It means recognizing that government does not have all the answers, and that public officials need to draw on what citizens know. And that's why, as of today, I'm directing members of my administration to find new ways of tapping the knowledge and experience of ordinary Americans -- scientists and civic leaders, educators and entrepreneurs -- because the way to solve the problem of our time is -- the way to solve the problems of our time, as one nation, is by involving the American people in shaping the policies that affect their lives.

The executive orders and directives I'm issuing today will not by themselves make government as honest and transparent as it needs to be. And they do not go as far as we need to go towards restoring accountability and fiscal restraint in Washington. But these historic measures do mark the beginning of a new era of openness in our country. And I will, I hope, do something to make government trustworthy in the eyes of the American people in the days and weeks, months and years to come. That's a pretty good place to start.

Thank you very much.

"You gotta love politicians. Well not really.

Judy Wallman, a professional genealogy researcher in southern California , was doing some personal work on her own family tree. She discovered that Harry Reid's great-great uncle, Remus Reid, was hanged for horse stealing and train robbery in Montana in 1889. Both Judy and Harry Reid share this common ancestor.

On the back of the picture Judy obtained during her research is this inscription: 'Remus Reid, horse thief, sent to Montana Territorial Prison 1885, escaped 1887, robbed the Montana Flyer six times. Caught by Pinkerton detectives, convicted and hanged in 1889.'

So Judy recently e-mailed Congressman Harry Reid for information about their great-great uncle.

Believe it or not, Harry Reid's staff sent back the following biographical sketch for her genealogy research:

'Remus Reid was a famous cowboy in the Montana Territory . His business empire grew to include acquisition of valuable equestrian assets and intimate dealings with the Montana railroad. Beginning in 1883, he devoted several years of his life to government service, finally taking leave to resume his dealings with the railroad. In 1887, he was a key player in a vital investigation run by the renowned Pinkerton Detective Agency. In 1889, Remus passed away during an important civic function held in his honor when the platform upon which he was standing collapsed.'

Now THAT is how it's done folks! That's real SPIN. "

I doubt if this is real, but it makes a point. I don't trust either side when it comes to the whole truth.

No Lobbyist in the Obama Administration ... Except When There Is One

But if you're going to campaign on sweeping condemnations about the evil of lobbyists and then, with great fanfare, ban them from your administration, you need to live by your own rules; or at least you shouldn't start making exceptions for them on Day 1.

So much for fucking rule's, eh?

what about... "Starting today and as of now"... I guess if the guy wants the job badly enough he simply will not lobby... from the time the rules go into effect as per his agreement.

I don't know what's so difficult about that to understand? As I said earlier... the litmus test will be in seeing what happens to those who violate the rules... I'm also curious to know what type of oversight will be used to guarantee that the rules are followed.

How did he violate his own rule? If the guy was appointed then the pres signed an executive order stating FROM NOW ON... no-one can lobby?

Unless you've been trailing this guy since the president signed the order and saw him LOBBY then WTF? That would be like arresting you for committing a crime 5 years ago if there was no law in place that made your action from 5 years ago a crime.  ;)

Political discussions will always always always have disagreements.

Barrack Obama is now the president.  He is now my husbands commander in chief.

He has done what every other president I've ever watched, do.  He's made promises on the campaign trail based on limited information.  Now he has access to all the information and realizes "Uh oh, wait a minute, I guess I can't quite make that happen the way I said I wanted to".

For good or ill, he is at the helm.  Let's let him do his job and evaluate him after he's had 100 days.  Providing of course Biden doesn't have some global catastrophe occur that will allow all the talk of change go out the window.

Real change takes time, promises on campaign trails are words in the wind, reality is sitting in the oval office seeing the whole picture.  Lets see how he paints the portrait now he has all the pieces and 'paint'.

And I still think a 6 week campaign time frame would make life much less stressful (and much more boring for the media) than this whole 2 years of bitter back stabbing and talking out the wazoo.

And what every American and resident should be doing is watching like a hawk and demanding ACCOUNTABILITY.  Doesn't matter who is in what position, transparency can only come from public accountability IMO.

This is so very true but has been almost completely ignored for so long.

When the media decides to shape policy instead of reporting it, most Americans never hear the real facts. And no, I'm not just referring to their love affair with Obama. There have been others in the past and there will be more in the future.

The level of corruption of basic principles is astounding.

FDR, Kennedy, and certainly Reagan were great communicators. They all had it....never mind the politics. It's rare and instills a bit of confidence in a lot of people. Obama is another and knows it. Even though he's quite a yakker, be glad that someone like him is doing all that yakking.

We've had some terrible communicators. Ike...while a great cold war president, was an awful speaker. He looked and was uncomfortable. Nixon........Egad! Ford a nice guy, not a speaker. Carter..bleaugh. Bush I...not gonna do it......Clinton, kinda boring and never shut up. Bush II.......A man that should never step before a microphone.

For most of us, Obama is fun to hear and you don't have to cringe when he opens his mouth. At least unlike Bush, who never sought other opinions, Obama has set up a kind of "braintrust." It's term going back 75 years. No matter what you think of it, at least it's different and anything different is good.

Like Gerald Ford said in 1974 after Nixon resigned: "Our long national nightmare has ended.'

Quote:
Former Raytheon lobbyist William Lynn’s nomination to be deputy secretary of defense got a qualified show of support Sunday from Arizona Sen. John McCain — who said he is now leaning toward moving forward with Lynn’s appointment.

Lynn’s nomination prompted protests from government watchdog groups after President Barack Obama had to waive his tough new rules for lobbyists serving in government in order to clear the way for Lynn to serve at the Pentagon.

“I don’t like it,” McCain, the ranking Republican on the Senate Armed Service Committee, said on “Fox News Sunday.” I think it’s a bit disingenuous to announce strict rules and then nominate someone with a waiver from the rules that you just announced, in one of the most important jobs in Washington, the No. 2 person at the Defense Department.”

“I’ve asked to see which areas that Mr. Lynn will be recused from,” McCain said, “but I think we need to probably move forward with his nomination.”

Lynn’s appointment ran afoul of Obama’s ethics pledge to bar lobbyists entering government from working on issues related to their former employers.

Jonny's correct.  He was a lobbyist for Raytheon so should not be able to be a pick for 2nd in command of the Denfense Department until he has not been a lobbyist for 2 years according to Obamma's rules.

During his campaign, Obama declared: "I have done more to take on lobbyists than any other candidate in this race. I don't take a dime of their money, and when I am president, they won't find a job in my White House."

Some pros and cons

According to the executive order, Lynn shouldn't have accepted the appointment though, of course, the order was only signed yesterday and Lynn presumably accepted the president's offer weeks ago. So he was arguably grandfathered in.

But because Raytheon is pervasive in defense contracting, it will difficult, to say the least, for Lynn to avoid involvement for two years in Pentagon matters that touch Raytheon.

[The company is the maker of "Bunker Buster" bombs, Tomahawk and Patriot missiles.  Raytheon also makes the "bunker buster" GBU- 28, a 5,000-pound bomb and missiles like the TOW, Maverick and Javelin, used in Operation Enduring Freedom.  In addition to missiles, Raytheon also builds sensors and radars used on unmanned and manned reconnaissance airplanes used extensively in Afghanistan.]

According to the company's disclosure forms, Lynn was part of a team that lobbied on a wide range of defense issues, including acquisitions policy, force protection, space and intelligence, command and control, simulation and training, missile defense, sensors and radars, and munitions and artillery. The breadth of the work reflects the reach of Raytheon throughout the Defense Department.

If Lynn had to recuse himself from all these areas, I'm not sure what's left for him to manage. Maybe the Pentagon daycare facilities but that seems about it.

Before his stint with Raytheon, Lynn was the Pentagon's comptroller and chief budget officer. He also previously worked as director of DOD's program analysis and evaluation.

Already, there have been two prominent exceptions made to Obama's no-lobbyists rule. William J. Lynn III, his choice to become the No. 2 official at the Defense Department, was registered until July as a lobbyist for defense contractor Raytheon. And William Corr, tapped as deputy secretary at the Department of Health and Human Services, lobbied that same agency through most of last year as an anti-tobacco advocate, according to public records.

...

As a lobbyist, Lynn worked on Pentagon budget matters including contracting policy, the military's use of space, missile defense, munitions and artillery, sensors and radars and advanced technology programs. Raytheon is one of the military's top contractors, doing $18.3 billion in U.S. government business in 2007.

Likewise, Corr lobbied for the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids on his new department's budget and a range of tobacco matters, including smoking prevention, curbing cigarette trafficking and making federal buildings smoke-free.

I suppose it depends upon whether a person wants to accept loop holes based on timing, or the spirit and intent of the order.

I think that the idea behind the order is pretty clear. It would appear that this situation is exactly what the order was designed to stop. But it's OK this time?

Somehow this just doesn't seem like real change.....

I agree Marc, it's a very weak argument.

At the end of the first link I posted is this commentary though.

Quote:
This is what makes purity on Washington lobbying so hard to maintain. Some of the people most knowledgeable about how the nation's capital works are lobbyists. That's what makes them effective.

Cracking down on lobbyists sounds great in theory. Lord knows, the public loves the concept since citizens are fed up with Washington operators who enrich themselves at the public trough, especially when it leads to extreme forms of the practice i.e. corruption.

That notwithstanding, lobbyists know intimately how the federal agencies and Congress function. Ban them for a number of years and it's going to prove difficult to fill some of the most important jobs in the bureaucracy. Americans may not want to hear that, but it's the truth.

That's why I posted his credentials at the Pentagon, also.

It's not my decision to make.  The spirit and intent of the order is clear and I'd like to see it happen.

The pros don't seem to outweigh the cons, and now there are already two exceptions, although the two may be good at their jobs.

Can't disagree with those comments, Kevin. It's a rock and hard spot, but the campaign was almost completely based on changing the way things are done in Washington.

Putting any partisanship aside, I’m afraid that I’m simply seeing a reassembly of the “good old boy” network.  Now our leadership has to decide how they want to play it: The same old way or not.

This would be good time to prove it.

Good Luck and God Bless

My Obama, My Messiah, My President, My Savior

How presumptious and arrogant can you people be?  Give the man a chance!  He has united us.  He has conquered the racial divide.  He has saved us all from financial ruin.  He is going to make all things right and good, and he's even promised the cure the planet of its fever!  Yes, these are all hard things for a mere human, but this is Obama, so stop acting like he's not God, and get with the program.

Oh Obama, I feel so much better now.

[are they still watching me?...]

Show Me the Economist Who Says We Are In a Crisis Because of a Birth Control Shortage

In perhaps the most absurd move yet by the current Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi is defending her move to include hundreds of millions of dollars in taxpayer money in the stimulus plan to expand family planning services — arguing that it will help financially strapped states.

Yes folks, her brain has now officially gone numb.

“…this is a, to stimulate the economy, is an economic recovery package and as we put it forth we have to deal with the consequences of the downturn in our economy. Food stamps, unemployment insurance, some of the initiatives you just mentioned. Believe it or not, they’re the right thing to do but they also stimulate the economy,” Pelosi told George Stephanopoulos on ABC’s “This Week,” who unsurprisingly didn’t press her on how exactly she deduces this notion.

In Pelosi’s world, less mouths to feed equals less money states will have to spend. Show me one economist that says that we are in an economic crisis because of a birth control shortage, or one that says more contraception (aka: population control) will get us out of it faster. What’s next?

Don't forget his Moses.

I'd think real change, if possible to meet expectations, would involve being an example in making the tough decisions.

I'd have to say his past seems qualifying.

"...we have to deal with the consequences of the downturn in our economy.  ...but they also stimulate the economy." ...Pelosi told George Stephanopoulos on ABC’s “This Week,” who unsurprisingly didn’t press her on how exactly she deduces this notion.

In Pelosi’s world, less mouths to feed equals less money states will have to spend.

Our state gov has a program, and "deduces this notion" thisaway:

Quote:
Granholm said if Michigan can reduce the number of unintended pregnancies by only 10 percent, it would save the state more than $27 million in Medicaid expenditures annually. Plan First!  is a program to expand family planning to 200,000 low income women.

Granholm first announced plans for Plan First! when she unveiled her Blueprint for Preventing Unintended Pregnancies in July 2005 that also includes two other initiatives:  "Talk Early, Talk Often," a pilot program that has already taught hundreds of middle school parents to talk to their children about sexuality and abstinence; and contraceptive equity for men and women.

Through Plan First!, the Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH) will now provide family planning services to women - ages 19 to 44 - who otherwise would not have medical coverage for these services.

Janet Olszewski, MDCH Director, said 200,000 women at or below 185 percent of poverty who reside in Michigan and meet Medicaid eligibility are estimated to benefit from the extension of family planning services.

"It is estimated that each public dollar spent to provide family planning services saves $3 that would otherwise be spent in Medicaid costs for pregnancy-related care and medical care for newborns, according to national Medicaid research," Olszewski said.  "These services provide cost-savings solutions for our Medicaid program, as well as prevent unintended pregnancies."

Assessed effectiveness would seem controversial.

On another note, Genesse County houses Flint, a city always listed as "most dangerous" somewhere just under Detroit.  As feared, with rising unemployment -- domestic abuse.

Quote:
The most recent numbers from 2006 show the county had over 6,200 domestic assault cases. That's up from the nearly 4,400 cases reported in 2005.

And though state police haven't compiled any current statistics, Genesee county police chiefs have reported double digit increases in the number of domestic abuse cases over the last two years.

The reasons for the increase are unclear, but the poor economy and an increase in substance abuse are at the top of the list.

Where Pelosi said, "...we have to deal with the consequences of the downturn in our economy," care is not a solution, just needed.
