Title: Cat... hummingbird pics
Post by Lobster on Jan 20th, 2009 at 1:27pm
As we discussed at Loucon...
I dunno... I suppose I am the Hummingbird Whisperer or such.  This happens 3-4 times a month during the summer.  I have about 100 pics or movies of my daughter and I handling them.

They tend to get stuck in my garage.  They land... they let us pick them up... we pick the cobwebs off them, let them rest a little, give them a drink... then they fly off... sometimes right away, sometimes after jumping around our hands for 5 or 10 minutes.

Ah Lobster - you are privileged to be added you to their trusted family.  "If you get tired, go to Lobster's house for a rest in his garage and a drink or two.  He's cool and he won't hurt you."

I like it - "The Hummingbird Whisperer."  That's very very cool.

And I'll bet you're glad that vultures haven't included you in the genealogy!!

That's absolutely amazing!  I would love to put feeders up at the house, but my two cats would kill themselves trying to catch one.

Reminds me of a story. Several years ago when we bought this house it had a big tree in the front. The kind of tree that you think, gosh, I will buy a glider bench to sit under that great tree and watch the world go by.

Then someone (probably me) had this great idea to hang a hummingbird feeder in that tree so we could enjoy that too. Well, you see, it's all in the placement of the feeder. Word of advice, do not hang the feeder over the bench. Because then, the nice hummingbird feeder, also becomes a cat feeder. Because our bad cat would launch herself from that bench and catch the poor little birds.

Needless to say, we moved the feeder. Poor hummingbird!

You're not getting them drunk, are you? :)

• It is important to change the sugar water daily or once in a couple of days at the most. Otherwise, the sugar water will ferment, especially on very hot days.

"We don't want drunk hummingbirds flying around,"

That is so cool, thanks for sharing.  :)

What does it feel like when they are ready to fly out of your hand? I know they have super fast wing speed and just wondering if they vibrate before take off and if you feel that or not.

The Humming birds have a trust with you, and that is so awesome! [smiley=thumb.gif]
