Title: CH in the news?
Post by aj on Jan 22nd, 2009 at 7:47pm
Sort of on the lighter side of cluster headaches (pauses for groans from the audience) has anyone heard of any celebrities who suffered from cluster headaches?  Any stories with characters who have cluster headaches?  In telling people I have cluster headaches, I never really feel they "get" how horrid this is.  Maybe if I could add on, "yeah, and it's why <insert historial figure> died!" it would give it a bit of gravitas.

Maybe it's just me, but I find that explaining to people what this is and how it just ruins your life is frustrating.  especially at the office when you can't come in or you leave unexpectedly and people sort of look at you with a "what, you can't take a little headache?" sort of look  it seems only we who have them, or those who are related to those who have them really "get it"  I hate when you explain it and people say, "oh yeah i get really bad sinus headaches so I know how that is" or "oh, yeah my migraines make me want to die" and you're thinking to yourself, "i'd give my eye teeth to trade this crap in for a sinus headache!"   I mean, I also get "normal" migraines from time to time, and those are a little tickle compared to the Beast.

So far, about the only thing I have is the oft-mentioned thing that women who get them say the pain is worse than childbirth.  that seems to lend some weight to my plight.  How do you explain it to people?  Does anyone else out there get irritated that people just don't get what this Beast is completely?

Carry a ball-pean hammer along with you... and instead of telling them what it feels like SHOW THEM!
:D

I gave up trying to explain the pain... and the best I can do is show them what I look like when getting hit.

That is what I do as well, I Think Artonio has a blog or somethin, found it once looking at his vids on YouTube. I gave up long ago, got tired of hearin, " yeah i get migranes as well"

When my friends look at me and say I look like hell, I bring them over to the computer, show them Artonio, and never have to explain again

I thought someone once said they thought someone like VanGogh had it, but I have no idea if that is true.

House did diagnose someone with Ch in 1 episode.  I dont remember if that was the final diagnosis.

It's one thing to be the one dealing with this and another thing to be the one that is watching it happen.  I believe Artonio did enough for the big screen.

Well, that's just spooky.  Watching that video, that could as well be me  Exact same reaction; the moaning, the frustrated, hopeless sobbing, the rocking, etc.  I knew we were all in pain, but I didn't realize it's so bad, it almost reduces us to the "lizard brain" part of our beings where our unique personalites are pretty much obliterated by pain and we are pretty much just organisms in torture..  I'm so forwarding a link to that video to everyone I know, perhaps with the intro, "is this what your sinus headache does to you, you twit?"

It may also just be my sick sense of self-mockery, but late at night, when I'm having an attack, there's a little voice in the deep back of my head who's thinking, "wow, the neighbors must be thinking I'm having some awesome sex with all this yelling and banging."  Well, at least until I start pleading with it to back off and go away.

Well I don't know of any celebrates that suffer, but the movie Pi's main character (Max Cohen) suffers from what looks similiar to cluster headaches.

that's true now that you mention it.  And I have thought of his fate more than once when under the thumb of a K8 hit. ;-)

That would explain why everyone thought VanGogh was crazy and possibally why he cut off his own ear.

Edgar Allen Poe was a possible.  Of course, I've also heard he had rabies...or tertiary syphillis.  Whatever.

A couple of years ago, someone posted a description of an historical personage in the 17th or 18th century--female, some sort of British nobility--who had what was unquestionably episodic CH.  I can't recall any specifics, unfortunately.

Stuff's been around for a while.  I often think of our brothers and sisters who fought this for centuries with nothing at all, and no one to help them.

Best,

George

Edit to add:

The first historical mention of episodic CH is generally attributed to Gerhard Van Swieten's 1745 description:

I'm pretty sure we all have thought of his fate. I know I have.

Artonio. I've never seen anyone else in an attack.  I cried watching you. We all go through it alone. Respect to you for doing it. I couldn't do that. I'd be too embarrassed to have people see me.

There is thread (2005) on famous people and celebrities who are thought to have clusters.

I doubt if many people in the public eye would talk about it. It would take someone big and up there to blow it into the public domain.
