HARTFORD, Conn., Jan. 28 (UPI) -- The mayor of Hartford, Conn., has been charged with getting free home renovations from a contractor who did business with the city.
Eddie Perez was arrested Tuesday, The Hartford Courant reported Wednesday. The state charges include bribery, falsifying evidence and conspiring to falsify evidence. Perez claims that failing to pay contractor Carlos Costa was an oversight because he was distracted by his wife being sick. Investigators say that in 2007 Perez falsely said that he had paid Costa for $20,000 in work and said he could give them the canceled check. He allegedly applied to the Hartford Federal Credit Union for a loan that afternoon. An arrest warrant quotes Costa as saying that he did $40,000 in work for Perez and was paid for half of it. He said that he was planning to do the work for free, believing it was "the cost of me doing business with the city." Costa said that the mayor came to his rescue after city employees appeared to be ready to remove him from a major municipal project. |

Big difference between kickbacks and the like and what Blogo did. I just hope he doesn't get a radio show.

I'm not sure that I follow your line of thinking, Charlie. What is the big difference? |

Every big city.....and a pile of smaller city mayors and the like are often the recipient of "political contributions" to parties and campaigns. "Kickbacks," although it's not too far off in some cases, was the wrong word.
Been that way since the stone age. Charlie |

Marc,
We are a heavy manufacturing area, exporting a lot of goods. Also, a high percent of RV manufacturers and suppliers here. This county is called the RV capitol of the world. The unemployment was very high in December because of the holiday closings which happen every year. However, this year some were down for a month or longer. Most are running again but a few have yet to start up. It will get better after the 1st quarter. At least we hope so. Some people are really having a hard time of if. |

I'm sorry for their situations, but as you said, many of them will get called back soon or after the end of the first quarter.
Then there is myself and 4,000 others from my former company that are permenently gone just in the 4th quarter layoff's alone, and from today's 2008 year end report, there are likely going to be further permanent cuts in late 1Q or early 2Q 2009. Upon doing some research, Advertising/Marketing and Print Journalism are both careers that are going to be short to no supply in 2009. The market is bleak out there. |
