Title: Need pet medical advice !
Post by HappyElaine on Feb 15th, 2009 at 8:15pm
Ok I have two cats, both have come down sick in one day.
No vet this time of night, one of the cats face is swollen up bad, and eyes watering, the other eyes are running bad.
What can I do for them tonight? They will be at the vet tomorrow morning, what can I do right now. I usually know what to do for my dogs but I am lost with these cats. They are both 13 and 14 years old.

I have no other suggestions, Im afraid.   Sorry :(

We don't have a clue. Our dog died a week before Christmas of a heart attack. My other dog Peanut started having a hard time breathing at times. Took her to the vet two weeks ago they said it was her teeth, they gave her meds and said the breathing problem would stop. I called them yesterday because peanut has not gotten better they want me to bring her in tomorrow for more test. Now the two cats.
We have looked this house over for anything that might cause this.
I am so lost as to what to do.
I put warm cloths on the cats face that seem to help some. I don't know anything else to do. They are all asleep now. I guess all I can do is wait. The vet opens at 7 am so we will be there with all three animals.
I am afraid also. Its hard losing a pet, but to have them all come down sick at the same time. We still have two dogs that have not come down sick yet.

cats outside?   could someone have sprayed them with something? like pepper spray?   that would cause breathing probs too.

No they are inside cats. I can not for the life of me figure it out. We have not sprayed anything around the house, we use the same cleaners as we always have. Haven't changed their food.  I can not think of what they could have gotten into.

Sounds like they got into something Elaine. Sleep is the best thing for them but keep track the little buggers until tomorrow.

Last night my dog swallowed a pen and it was stuck 3/4's down his throat, I thought for sure he was a gonner, he was in total freakin panic mode, his mouth was stuck open and everything.

Short of the story, I was able to get two fingers on it and he was happy as a pig in shit again. Kids stopped crying etc etc.

When I was a kid I got a dime stuck up my nose and had to go to the ER, just thought I'd share  [smiley=grin2.gif]

Hope your cats are OK Elaine. And just so you know, my tag name is named after the funniest damn thing ever posted on this board, your lip story LMAO!!!!

Elaine, it SO sounds like they got into something toxic!  I looked up allergic reactions -  OK, so it's not necessarily comprehensive, but from this, it doesn't sound like an allergy problem.  START PRINTPAGEMultimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or RegisterEND PRINTPAGE

I do know that when kitties are having trouble breathing and the problem is upper respiratory or asthma-related, it is recommended to get him into a really humid room - so easier done with a humidifier in a bathroom or something.  Don't know if that would help here or not.

But I agree with you - the watery eyes - best thing is the warm towel to help the weeping.  I would NOT use visine or anything to flush them, and human anti-inflammatories like aspirin will kill a cat, so do NOT go that route!  Wish I knew more!  7:00am can't get here too soon!

If you're up and still reading this, perhaps register at the forums of The Cat Site and post the same question in the Health forum.  START PRINTPAGEMultimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or RegisterEND PRINTPAGE  - there's 90 people on the site right now, with 14 in the health forum.  Maybe someone there will have an idea.

I'm so sorry, and I'm sending HEAPS of vibes that the vet will be able to help them recover and quickly!

Laurie

They made it through the night. I put them in a cage and put a towel over it and ran a humidifier under it. They look a lot better.. I called the vet they have a appointment at 10:30 Buddy is coming home and taking them. I don't do the vet thing.

I don't always have the money for vet bills. I found a place on the net called care credit. com. The vets take it. That is how we are paying, with three animals sick it will take it.

It turned out to be sinus real bad. I got enough meds for both cats.
Now we have to take our dog this week to have her teeth cleaned.
My little dog is so scared of the vet I hate to leave her.
It has to be done.

Thanks for all the advice. It helped  the cats a lot.

whew... thank God.

Glad it wasn't anything more serious... but it's always so devastating when our furry little buddies are ill.

with warm regards,
Tony

Hey E....

Is the air in your home overly dry by chance?  Max has been sneezing recently.  Nothing worrysome or that often, but he never did during the summer.

I wondered if it might be the terrible dry north winter air in here.  Megan wakes up with sore throat from the air this dry, but a humidifier in this tiny place makes he walls run and steams up the windows.

He's healthy otherwise but for the occasional sneezing.  Doc give you any idea what the sinus infection is from?
