Title: Fundraising for CH.com!
Post by UnderTheRadar on Feb 17th, 2009 at 3:01pm
Hey everybody!  So if you don't know, I'm finishing up my art degree and I'm studying Printmaking.  I had a great idea for a fundraiser for this wonderful site- how about a limited edition print of something?

I'm talking a real art print, not just something printed out on an expensive printer...fine art paper, hand-printed, embossed, numbered, the whole shebang.  Right now I'm heavily into screen printing and lino-cuts (which is like wood block printing, where you hand-carve the image, in the block, and run it through the press.)  That means I can replicate just about any kind of image, be it a photograph, a drawing, a painting, what have you.

What do you guys think?  We could all present ideas and vote on them,  or I could design something myself...it could be just an image you all like, or we could make it like a "CH.com 2009" poster with information on it...and, I could even do a run of t-shirts, too, depending on the size and format of the image.

All the proceeds would go DJ for the site; I really love what I do, and I love this site, so I'll be donating my time and the supplies (though if you want t-shirts, I may need the cost of the shirts covered.)  What do y'all think?

-Radar

Here's one idea- what about a cool map of the world, with something showing all of the countries that are represented by the membership on the board?
For example, Nasa has some amazingly beautiful images of the Earth at night...

Careful about using copyrighted images . . . . people are funny about intellectual property, and rightly so.

Actually, the NASA images are public domain; after all, it was our tax money that paid for it, right?  ;D

That our tax money paid for it has nothing to do with copyright.  That's like saying anyone who receives NEA money works in the public domain.  It's simply not true.

From NASA:
NASA Regulations for Advertising Requests
12.05.08

Strict legal regulations govern NASA policy regarding advertising requests. Companies interested in producing NASA-related advertisements must notify NASA's Multimedia Division in writing by sending e-mail to Bert Ulrich (bert.ulrich@nasa.gov). Requests should describe the intended use of NASA imagery in the ads. If possible, layouts or storyboards of the advertisement should be included. When all legal requirements have been met, NASA will send the advertiser an approval letter. A general overview of NASA policy follows:

   * As a government agency, NASA will not promote or endorse or appear to promote or endorse a commercial product, service or activity. Therefore, there are strict regulations on the use of any of the NASA identities and emblem imagery in advertisements.
   * NASA does not permit use of the insignia and other NASA indicia in advertisements. Any use of the NASA identity on spacesuits and on the Shuttle is generally not permitted unless authorized by Headquarters Public Affairs.
   * Any references to NASA in an advertisement must be factually accurate.
   * Many NASA images and most film and video footage are in the public domain can be used for advertising purposes. However, there are rules regarding the appearance of astronauts or NASA employees or names in commercial activities. Astronauts or employees who are currently employed by NASA cannot have their likenesses or names displayed on any commercial products, advertisements or commercial product packaging. Astronauts and NASA employees who are retired from the Agency can grant permission for the use of their likenesses or names, but that permission may be subject to a fee. For deceased astronauts or employees, their families must grant permission for use of their images or names.
   * Commercials are not permitted to be shot at NASA Centers.
   * The NASA Insignia cannot appear on websites that contain open advertising unless approved by the Associate Administrator for Public Affairs.
   * When all legal and policy regulations have been met and approval is obtained, the advertiser may contact the Photo Department at 202-358-1900 for information to access imagery.

I think it's a great idea that you have decided to use your artistic talents to raise funds for the site.  It's just what DJ and Steph need to see right now with the future in such an uncertain time.

Anything we the members can do to raise funds to keep the site going and relieve stress from their financial and emotional burdens involved with carrying the site will help to insure the site remains active and alive for many years to come!

Perhaps it's time I got back to some of my crafts - maybe I'll start a new clock fund raiser.  They always went over well.

Anyone out there with suggestions for other things we can do help keep the site alive and breathing while DJ transitions out of the military and has to consider how to support the site?

C'mon, lets everyone pitch in and show how important this place is for all of us - for us to share our grievances, to share of views, to share our experiences, and to just be able to vent and not have to explain, to know there will be someone who will understand.  That kind of environment is priceless.

Cat

p.s. perhaps I can even do up some of the favorite poems or sayings in calligraphy for people.

And we could all just hit the Paypal button on the bottom of the page and they would have the funds instantly . . .

But it's so much more fun to buy an art print and have it hanging on your wall as a reminder of helping out the site than just hitting a paypal button!  :)

Don't worry, Mosaicwench, I've worked with some artists in the past who use public domain imagery in their work, and that's how I found out about the NASA satellite imagery, like the photos of Earth from space.  This is from NASA's website:

"As a government entity, NASA does not license the use of NASA materials or sign licensing agreements. The agency generally has no objection to the reproduction and use of these materials (audio transmissions and recordings; video transmissions and recording; or still and motion picture photography), subject to the following conditions:

   * NASA material may not be used to state or imply the endorsement by NASA or by any NASA employee of a commercial product, service, or activity, or used in any manner that might mislead. Please see NASA Advertising Guidelines and Merchandising Guidelines for more information.
   * It is unlawful to falsely claim copyright or other rights in NASA material.
   * NASA shall in no way be liable for any costs, expenses, claims, or demands arising out of the use of NASA material by a recipient or a recipient's distributees.
   * NASA does not indemnify nor hold harmless users of NASA material, nor release such users from copyright infringement, nor grant exclusive use rights with respect to NASA material.
   * NASA material is not protected by copyright unless noted. If copyrighted, permission should be obtained from the copyright owner prior to use. If not copyrighted, NASA material may be reproduced and distributed without further permission from NASA.
   * If a recognizable person, or talent (e.g., an astronaut or a noted personality engaged to narrate a film) appears in NASA material, use for commercial purposes may infringe a right of privacy or publicity. Therefore, permission should be obtained from the recognizable person or talent. If the proposed use of the NASA material could be viewed as a commercial exploitation of that person. However, if the intended use of NASA material is primarily for communicative purposes, i.e., books, newspapers, and magazines reporting facts of historical significance (constitutionally protected media uses), then such uses will generally be considered not to infringe such personal rights.
   * Some NASA audiovisual material may incorporate music or footage, which is copyrighted and licensed for the particular NASA work. Any editing or otherwise altering of the work may not be covered under the original license, and therefore would require permission of the copyright owner.
   * NASA audiovisual material may include visible NASA identifiers (e.g., the name of the vehicle and the NASA Insignia or Logotype in photographs or film footage of Space Shuttle vehicles). Use of such materials is generally non-objectionable, provided the NASA identifiers appear in their factual context."

What you posted were the NASA guidelines for advertising requests, and that mostly pertains to the use of their logo and any implications of government endorsement of a product or service.  but really, I was just showing the Earth at Night photo as an example of what can be done with a plain ol' map.   ;)

What's the clock fundraiser, Cat?  (I was just thinking today how handy it would be for friends and family to have a clock on the wall with my CH "attack" times clearly marked!!)  ;D

Oh, hey, I just checked out your mosaics website- great work!  I especially love "Sediment" and "Midnight Snow."  I used to do stained glass work, but it's just toooooo hot in Texas in the summer to be covered in sweat and glass dust!!  :D

Paige every clock I"ve done has been unique and specific.  I did one that went up for auction after 9/11 - Jonny bought it for DJ.  As a result instead of the one and only clock I would do of that kind, I did a second for Jonny.  DJ and Jonny are the only ones who own the clocks.  They were done with the OUCH logo though.

Perhaps Jonny has a pic of the clock he can post to the thread, or maybe DJ and Steph.  It was done with a certain piece of me attached, a reverence for the time we faced as a nation.

There have been others as well, and perhaps I can work one in that will have the CH times co-ordinated.  I can do them individually so it wouldn't be hard to do.  Although the artwork - if taken from antoher - would have to get pre approval.

If anyone has suggestions, I'm all ears :)

Clark has (through me) talked to Marc about taking a couple of his photos and transferring them into paintings as well.  That is another possibility.  I've also done Christmas ornaments.  There are a multitude of ways to express your caring through your talents.  I've even crocheted doilies for special friends.

The universe of imagination is the only limitation :)

Hey Cat, I could work some of your calligraphy into a print!

...Lemme work up some ideas tomorrow after class; I have a photographer friend who does beautiful infrared photography, and he's been wanting to see what I could do with some of his photos anyway!  I think a cool photo with a poem or saying in calligraphy would be really neat.

Here's another thought. Maybe everyone here could nominate DJ at this link, the past inductee's had something to do with medical stuff.

I heard on Fox news that the winner get's $10,000....That should run this site for awhile!  ;)

"The Energizer Keep GoingŪ Hall of Fame Recognizes
perseverance, boundless energy and a never-quit spirit."

DJ not only does that himself, (CH and Moyamoya) he helps all of us do it, no?
