Title: Fish Talk
Post by KJ on Feb 21st, 2009 at 9:42pm
No, fish don't really talk! But I have fish questions. I bought a swordfish steak at the store, because I'm trying to eat more fish, and cut down on red meat. Plus, it was half price! :)

Well, doing some research, maybe swordfish is a bad one to eat, because they live so long, and store lots of bad stuff in their fat. So, that led me to more sites, and the sustainable fish lists, and the methods used to catch, and farm, and which is better, and which to avoid, and damn, after eating my fish, I fear I might not make it through the night due to all the mercury and other toxins. Anyway, if you eat fish, or want to eat fish, and wonder about the sustainability and choices, here is a good web site START PRINTPAGEMultimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or RegisterEND PRINTPAGE

Maybe there are some fish experts that can help us (me) choose healthy alternatives?

The Ocean is the worlds largest toilet, and it flushes twice a day. Now that we have that out of the way. If you like Sword Fish, and don't want to worry  about all the nasty toxins and Mercury. That the do gooders try to scare you with. Have Thrasher Shark Steaks instead. They taste the same and don't have any of those toxins and stuff. Or atleast not much of them.
Salmon: Don't consume Farmed, Atlantic or Pink Salmon
Tuna: Albacore or Yellowfin. Get young ones that are under 14 lbs. If you must by it in cans. Only buy Chunk White Tuna, doesn't matter what brand. By law only Albacore can be labeled Chunk White in the cans.
If you want to spring for the gourmet stuff online START PRINTPAGEMultimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or RegisterEND PRINTPAGE Jim really does filet and smoke all his own fish. And Scott cooks every one of those damn crabs.
If there is a particular specie of fish you're interested in PM me. I'll be happy to tell you as many fishermen's lies about them as you want.

Some fish contain mercury and eating too much of those can cause mercury toxicity. Its recommended that you eat fish not more than 3 times a week and some particular type not more than once a week. Its also better to eat a variety of fish. Crustaceas like lobsters and prawns have lower level of mercury.
