Title: Starting to sound like spring....
Post by midwestbeth on Feb 22nd, 2009 at 11:54am
The lake thawed out and they are back!  I don't need an alarm clock anymore.   About 25 of them out there right now, along with a few ring necked ducks.

Took this yesterday morning through the window.

Now if it would only start to feel like spring.  It's only 26 out there now........brrrr.  It's a beautiful day, but looks can be deceiving.  I want to go outside and play.....

My nipples are tingling with anticipation for spring to arrive!!!

I can't wait to get out there to start my veggie garden.

I had the good fortune to be able to can 58 quarts of tomatoes last summer. I planted 2 dozen tomato plants. This year I'll start my tomatoes from seed sometime in the middle to the end of March.

Tulips and day lilies should be fine even in a hard freeze.  The business end (bulbs and corms) is protected by the earth.  Too dry or too wet would do more damage than cold - they were bred for this type of climate!  Your leaves may look a little bedraggled, but the flowers should be fine.

I just ordered my vegetable seeds - it must be spring!

I can't wait to plant my bell peppers (red, orange & yellow,my FAV)!!  I'm going to make it a point this year to get my ass out in the garden with Jesse.  I usually stay away from it, but I have to try and stay busy and be outside as much as possible.  I think I'll also plant a strip of cosmos again in the front yard (that or Dahlia's.  I love annuals, not really a perennial gal :-/).

Come on SPRING!!!

I don't have room for a garden, but I was thinking about growing a tomato plant or two, hanging from the carport.

I think we'll have an early spring, the wind has been blowing like it's March already, and the sun feels good. Been watching the geese for a couple weeks now, saw a bunch the other day.  [smiley=vrolijk_26.gif]

Then it'll be April before you know it!  [smiley=vrolijk_1.gif]

And April showers bring May flowers. And  you know what May flowers bring.....

Pilgrims.  [smiley=curtain.gif]

I'm not yet aware of the same sensation perculating about, but you'd been industrious, looks like a labor of love.  Enjoyed your ambitious, expansive semi-circle work undertaken in the pics last year.  Gotta get a dirty thumb before the green one glows.

Give a bloomin' pic again when the the sun shineth and you maketh hey!

Another thing I cannot WAIT for is to go camping!!!  There's nothing like the crackle of a campfire, the stillness of the night falling asleep to the symphony of crickets chirping and the hot steamy goodness of coffee in the morning. :)

Hey Beth!

I saw a very fat Robin yesterday!  Spring must be close.  I just wish someone would tell the temperature that!

Oh spring is near! * Did ya hear that Mr.Weather?* snickers
I was being lazy a bit and set out tons of newspaper and cardboard over my garden letting the rain soak it all down. I hope this cuts my weeding~ I read about it with equal pros and cons. But thought it was worth a try as I am not about to go out to that muddy mess right now. I live in Oregon, mid valley actually. Todays forecast was showers, with rain. Makes a mess of a clay garden...
On the bonus side, set in five new cherry trees, and going to get more figs, almond and kiwi trees in soon. The greenhouses around here been having sales.

OMG!!  The geese have decided that they like my lake.  Had at least 50 of them on there this mornign when I left.  Wish I had my camera with me.

I did get bundeled up and went outside yesterday.  Burned dead grass where mowing is impossible.......which meant slidding down and falling in the mud several times....LOL.......At least I didn't fall into the fire!

Pruned and fed all the fruit trees last weekend.  Might start getting something on them this year or next.

I'm going to start prepping the ground for the garden next weekend no matter what the weather is!

24 degrees and sunny out here in the center of Wisconsin.  The angle of the sun has the snow melting off the roof outside the South facing windows and freezing into a nice lovely sheet of ice once it hits the ground.

As luck would have it, the front door and porch face North, so the walkway is devoid of slick areas.

Sure could use some spring like warmth around here.

Yes - only 8 inches of snow qualifies as spring.  It's melting pretty nicely - the sun is higher in the sky.

It's starting to "smell" like spring.

Warm wind out of the south today.  No snow, and it's 60 here.

Starting to notice the leaf-mould smells that tell me that spring's on the way.  No crocuses yet, but it can't be long.

The male redwings have been back for a few weeks now (they always arrive before the females), and I saw a yellow-headed blackbird perched on some cattails in a slough over by Meridian the other day.  First one I've seen this year.

Starting to get a hankering to get out on a river with a fly-pole.  That's always a sign of spring.   ;)

Won't be long...

Best,

George

You'll know spring has finally sprung in Wisconsin when you hear the thunder of the first Harley engine on the road.
