Title: Newbie question on Verapamil discontinuance
Post by jgkirk on Mar 1st, 2009 at 7:16pm
My previous CH cycle was December 07 for 2 months. Was fine in 2008 once out of cycle. My typical medication (along with Oxygen) is Verapamil (360 mg /day), with a prednisone ramp up and taper for 10 days, along with Imitrex injections for aborting when I have to. Last October 08, felt another cycle coming so started taking verapamil again (360 mg) until late November when started getting hit with major anxiety attacks daily. Stopped taking the verapamil because I thought it might be causing the anxiety - still have the anxiety attacks. Anybody had any experience with this sort of thing? Am getting milder headaches daily, but no wallops, but was wondering if anybody had any success with anxiety relief? Could the verapamil have played a role? I'm sure interested in any suggestions or ideas from anyone.

Thanks everybody.

I'm not aware of any of your meds being associated with anxiety.

Sudden onset of anxiety is common and often a source of distress because it does not appear to have a clear source/etiology.

First, I'd put your question to your doc just to settle the question from a medical perspective.

Then suggest you look at this link, reading it with the question in mind: Have I begun to think along the lines outlined. It's not uncommon for "routine" worry to suddenly take on a driving force of its own, i.e., what becomes defined as anxiety, even panic attacks which come out of the blue. IF you can see your thinking patterns in this little article, you may wish to either consult a counselor and/or go to the link at the end of the article and see the catalog for useful helps.

In any case, anti-anxiety meds can help relieve the immediate symptoms but they will not cure the problem: that requires some reworking of how you may be thinking in patterns which are disruptive.

Interesting report:

Curr Pain Headache Rep. 2005 Apr;9(2):109-12.
Cognitive processing in cluster headache.

Evers S.

Department of Neurology, University of Munster, Albert-Schweitzer-Str. 33, 48129 Munster, Germany. everss@uni-muenster.de.

[Edited for length.] In neuropsychologic evaluations, a reversible decline of memory processing was detected during the cluster attack, but not between two attacks. Long-term observation revealed no progressive cognitive decline in cluster headache patients over the years. With regard to personality changes, a liability susceptibility to anxiety disorders and to hypochondriasis, but not to mood changes, has been described inconsistently. All changes in alterations of cognitive processing in cluster headache are demonstrated to be mild and do not relevantly contribute to the clinical picture of this disease.

i have a severe anxiety disorder that i fight, sometimes my anxiety is just about the hit to come or cycle when i was epesodiac. i am able to not take to much for meds to control but i do take klonopin in small doses.
one should take an inventory of themselves to see if the anxiety is a defined issue or general anxiety or panic. self introspection is time well spent.
