It's the most experienced (read: highest paid) that are geting the pin slips.  Economy sucks and they save a ton in payroll.  

I hope they've offered you a decent severance package.

Maybe all us laid off Clusterheads can drive and meet up for dinner at a centrally located McDonalds?

Yes it certainly is Mark and  I am hurting for you right now.  I know you've been dreading and waiting for this exact thing to happen for some time now.   I am so sorry.  It's a sad day for America that you will be unemployed for a few days.   :-*  I know that there are still places and people out there who will recognize what you have to offer..it won't be but a few WEEKS  at most.

In the meantime, start networking and of course take the time to relax and enjoy your short sabbatical.

With 31 years I'll leave with a full year of severance and benefits. Whereas I hit the magic 75 I'll be filing my retirement paperwork this week.  Along with that the retirement benefit comes with a $350 gift or a $600 party.  I think I'll go with the party and invite my CEO, VP and the snot nose young director who decided to let me go. (She met with me for about 10 minutes to determine my fate).

I've got an HR friend who is re-working my resume and will then send it to her other contacts.

The magic 75 is the total of age and time of service.  54 with 31 = 85

I ask because I don't think the topic of your thread will be rare these days. I made it through the first round.  I went directly to the Principals of the firm and asked a kid question and they said not to worry. Right.

What I'd like to know is did you ever want to do something totally different than where you were? In hind sight, I should have been a Park Ranger. Too late now though.

You ever think about doing something you really wanted to do or do something you thought might be rewarding in other ways?

Your question was not in any way rude.

Before the economy took a nose dive I definately had plan A, B, and C in case I got layed off.  Now A, B and C don't exist any more.  Checked into Customs Agents and Air Marshalls but I'm too old. I let my Commercial Drivers License expire so that's out for now.  Hopefully I can land with one of the out sourcing companies that will be back filling the positions that Sprint has layed off.

You know, that is SO SMART! I mean, it's too bad the plans A B and C didn't pan out, but I have never even thought through a plan past going to the unemployement office. I work in IT dept of a major financial services company and we're certainly vulnerable. I guess I'd look at temp agencies and outsourcers too.
