Post by worriedwife on Mar 20th, 2009 at 11:20am
hia ppl here's hoping as many of u r PF right now :), i've gotta question 4 anyone who can help...  My hubby finally got the 02 a few weeks ago and it has been a life saver ;D the prob now is he seems to be sucking his bag flat!! now over here in the uk the max flow u can get is 15lpm & thats what he's on... the only other option is the machine that turns air into 02 & as far as my research shows thats no good for a CH.. the nice man that delivers the tanks has given has just given him the mask without the bag on it although he wasn't really sopposed to have ;)... what if any opinions do u all have about this charlotte xoxo

Yes, that is a typical problem with those tiny bags.

One way to help this, but it sure can be difficult.........
Put a much larger bag on it.....like an 8QT plastic bag.  Just use tape and tape the damn thing on.  Then when he needs to use O2, and this is the hard part, he needs to turn it on and let the bag fill before he starts trying to use it.  Let the bag fill for a full 15 to 30 seconds, then, breathe very slowly and deeply.

BMonee has a great idea, but there are still flaws in it.  YES, it will give him a few good breaths of oxygen, but he will eventually still get ahead of the flow rate, and the bag will then collapse, again.

I don't fully know the set up, there in England.  Is the tank the type that has the regulator already attached to the tank?  If so, it would be difficult, I would think, to get a higher flow regulator.

Another idea, that I have seen, is to take TWO tanks, and then by means of a "T" connector, hook BOTH tanks to the mask, and then turn them on.  It may take some ingenuity to get it set up.  I would think that the "T" connector could be purchased at an aquarium supply store.  I am not a physicist or an engineer, but with the two 15LPM tanks, you would get a larger flow rate.  I don't know if it would be the doubling (30LPM) or not, but it would be higher than the 15LPM, that is for sure!

Give that a shot, and let us know how it works out!
