Title: I'm either going crazy, or this is screwy.
Post by Redd on Mar 30th, 2009 at 9:42pm
So I sent a resume last week to a Media Design firm for sales.

This morning, 10:07 AM I get an email from the VP  stating.

Quote:
Good Morning Peggy,

I would like to set up an interview with you at your earliest convenience.
Please let me know when you would be available to visit us at our office.

Sincerely,

Rick Stensberg
Vice President
Neumark-Stensberg Design & Print, Inc.

10:27 am I return his email.

Quote:
Good Morning Rick,

Thank you for getting back to me regarding this position.  I would be available tomorrow afternoon or Wednesday morning if either of those times would work for you.

I look forward to discussing this opportunity with you. Sincerely,

Peggy Flick

Yes...would that be at the office here in Point, or your offices in Wis. Rapids?

Peggy

That would be at our office in Wis. Rapids.

so at 8:05 PM

I had to send this...

Quote:
Thank you for getting back to me before morning, Rick.

I hope it won't be too inconvenient to reschedule for Wednesday.  My daughter was sent home from music rehearsal today with a bout of food poisoning I believe, and I'm not sure how she will be feeling tomorrow, or if I many need to take her the doctor tomorrow if she isn't any better.   I'm sorry this came up last moment.  Please let me know as soon as possible.

Thank you,

Peggy

Is it just me, or are 6 and 4 hour delays in emails from a potential employer, especially regarding an interview, from the  the Vice President of all people, just a bit  off...strange...and then to leave ME to pull teeth for the details of the location even thought the ad stated the Point office is where I'd be working from.

Maybe the business world has really changed in the last 6 months I've been laid off...but this just doesn't seem normal.

Any input?

Sometimes I experience multi-hour delays in sending and receiving e-mail to and from Pat. My corporate account is behind a firewall, and Road Runner gets really backed up with its batching sometimes.

I DO have an idea, about that.  As vice-president, he has MANY things on his plate, beside the interview.  For all you know, he could have been in a very important meeting, and only when he came out for a break, would he scan his email.  You just don't know.

I actually think you did GREAT in getting several responses in the same day!

BTW, just a suggestion here, but in your first response back to him, unless you know him personally, I would have addressed him as Mr. Stensburg, and NOT by his first name, even though he addressed you by your first name.  Maybe I am just an old fart, and that courtesy has gone by the wayside, but that is what I would have done.  It is old school courtesy to use his proper name, until you are invited or instructed to do otherwise.

Good luck, dahlink!

Chuck

Well wouldn't that be hell if an email came in to me from him, 2 hours past a deadline for returning him responce?

;D ;D

All I know is that with the delays as they were, I got the feeling he isn't quite focused on filling the position.

When it's stated "earliest convienience" one would believe they are at least looking to expedite the process.
As well as addressing the issues long past normal business hours seems odd.

I can't remember arranging a job interview by email - only by phone. But I am old and enjoy living in the past.

I had a situation of constant anxiety once when trying to get an interview/tour for one of the grad schools I was applying to - I ended up leaving a bunch of messages on answering machine of the admissions director, got no responses, finally just called the person to leave a message saying that I would be in town on campus on a certain day at a certain time. I showed up, no one there .... he wandered in later, oblivious to the meeting, but had a letter of acceptance and a scholarship to offer me.

So maybe things will work out!

As I mentioned...

addressing the issues long after normal business hours...with this economy, he better be offering a damn good base salary if he thinks I'm going to be working 16-18 hour days.

A delay of several hours in an e-mail is not out of the norm.  and for him to address the issue after buisness hours is normal too.  You are on his time frame, he is not on yours.  I would be greatful he contacted you and not complain that it took him a couple of hours to return an e-mail.  Pegg, I would be greatful that I had an interview given the state of the economy and unemployment.

I am with Cuck on this with reguards to being to  informal with a prospective employer.  Addressing him as Mr. Stensburg would be the only way to go.  It shows respect and profesionalism.

Good luck with the interview!

-P.

He may be in the busy process of interviewing many now,

and had stayed late doing so, but your last e-mail was at 8:05pm, he may have left the office at 8:00pm.  E-mail again this morning including interest to show sales experience, mentioning commissioned sales success also.

Sales could be more incentive based, they are looking for producers.  I know its a job opportunity but ask about turnover and travel at the interview.

Peggy,
If these are your actual responses, he might have needed to reconsider.   I have not worked in a very long time, however if I were looking for someone to be detail oriented, the error in the last response would have made me rethink my own position in hiring someone who missed such an obvious editing error!

I think the fact that you missed the extra letter in the word "MAY" that turned it into "MANY" might be a head turner for most prospective employers

He He He!! Just busting your chops!!!  LOL!    John

The executives in the world have so many meetings that they are living their lives by Blackberry or other mobile PDA. It is not surprising that he sends or answers emails after hours. I do it all the time.

In the old days I wrote myself notes or left myself voicemails for things I had to remember to do or calls I had to make. Now I just send it via email at my own convenience.  I don't really have the expectation that the recipient will answer during the crazy off hours, but in reality, many do.

For what it is worth... pointing out what is going through his head:

- First, it is still an employers market.  Times are tough.  He is expecting every candidate to bend over backward to meet his requirements during this process.

- Do not worry about the time delay between his emails.  He is busy or in meetings and such.  For the late one he was obviously checking his mail from home one last time for the day.

- The fact he is handling this personally instead of through an assistant, along with how soon he wishes to set up the interview, indicates that they have a pressing need now... to be filled as soon as possible.  Someone quit, or they signed some new piece of business... but they need a seat filled now.

- Pushing off the first interview... bad bad bad.  In his mind... if your personal life negated your ability to attend something as critically important as a new-hire interview, then you are a risk of being a 'high maintenance' employee.  In hindsight you should have called in a favor from anyone to take care of your personal issues while you attended the interview.

- Another downside with pushing off an interview... you often want to be the first one in front of the hiring manager.  The hiring process is a pain in the ass.  If what appears to be a qualified candidate appears in front of me, I want to hire them and get the process over with.  This is especially true if my need to fill the seat is pressing.

I am writing up reqs for two open positions this week.  I -hate- the process, even though I need the bodies.

Good luck.

Peggy I agree with the previous posters, especially lobster.as a mom I understand you wanting to be there for meg especially with what she's been through lately.that being said He was good about asking for your Best time to meet and I imagine he is probably on a tight schedule. That shows to me that he is trying to accommodate your schedule.your daughter being sick is not the fault of either of you but may get him thinking.
As for the timing of the e-mails it just seems to me that he is willing to and does put in long hours.Does that mean he expects the same from you? that is to be determined at the interview and hopefully future meetings.in the positin he with the company the fact that he is taking on the job of setting up the interviews doing the interviewing and hiring that is somewhat of a  rarity.
All of this being said I hope you have a great interview and that you get the job that fits you perfectly.everything I am saying is just my opinion and not intended as criticism.I hope only the best for you and I hope meg is feeling better.hugs and prayers for a great outcome.

Per his email first thing this morning, he was more than happy to reschedule the interview for tomorrow.

This business in quite small in comparison to my last employer, and offices are confined to two counties/two offices.

I understandd it's an employer's market, and as much as I need a job, I also need one that is "family friendly".

I have no one here to call in any favors to.  If caring for an ill child is a deal breaker for this job, so be it.

Aye... good luck.  Smaller businesses are typically the more family friendly, so hopefully you will be good to go.  Impress the crap out of them.

Pegg,

I had just graduated from college and got an interview with John Torinus, then editor of the business page of the Milwaukee Sentinel. I ended up having to call him the morning of the interview to tell him that I had slammed a big glass of OJ the day before which Pat had turned her nose up at. In retrospect, it had gone bad.

The morning of the interview my guts had a 3-D life of their own. When I called Mr. Torinus, he half-jokingly asked me if I wanted to hold the interview in the men's room. Of course I passed and I rescheduled for several days later. I got the job. Just like you're going to.

They tried to pull a bait and switch, and I made it clear that in no way would I agree to a straight commission with no group health or other company paid or reimburced expences such as mileage or laptop or cell phone, hotel or meals on the road ...no nothing.

I told them I was applying for a salary plus comm.  position as advertised.

We'll see if they want to negotiate compensation.

That would appear to me to be the only hold out I would have.
