Title: Finnish site adds ch.com and OUCH to its links!
Post by sandie99 on Mar 31st, 2009 at 1:52pm
I mentioned a long time ago that I emailed Finland's Migraine Association (the organization in which ch sufferers also belongs to in this country) about adding this site and OUCH to its links under "cluster headache" or as we Finns say, "sarjoittainen päänsärky".

The president of the Association emailed me shortly with a promise that both of these websites would be added to the links - section. Well, I've been patiently waiting...

Until now. They have FINALLY added both ch.com and OUCH to their links! :)

You can check it out for yourselves right here:

I'm so happy about this! Finally more Finns can find their way here and to OUCH. :)

Doing the happy dance,
Sanna

I have a question Sanna.

Do most Finns read and write  English as well as you?

Linda, in my travels to MANY European countries, I found that MOST are quite fluent in English .. It is only a lot of us snob-nosed Americans that are too dumb to be fluent in several languages!

BUT, in France, it is difficult to find anyone that is willing to use English, yet most know it.

Chuck

The reason I asked is that if this is a Finnish association I would expect most would want to read in their native language and ch.com and OUCH is all in English.  Might not reach  folks who weren't as fluent as Sanna.   I guess you're correct in that a lot of European countries  have more people who speak English than we have who have learned Italian or Hungarian for instance.

Sarjoiitanen paarsaki? Or something?
Holy Moses Sandy, I hope you Finns do realize your language resembles nothing of the other Northern European languages whatsoever? Haha but that is also what is so charming about your tongue, and most certainly, how mysteriously.
A Norwegian could learn Dutch within a month, a Dane Swedish in the same time and what have you not, but we all look at Finnish as if it were alien. Go Finns!!!!

Anyway Sandy, that is great news and way to spread the word. Hail to you. It is us, the sufferers whom build this house, and you've just laid not a brick, but a wall to it.

Oh Chuck, do not get me started on the Frenchspeaking lol.
As I've mentioned before, and some might even remember, I'm from the southermost part of the Netherlands, in the small space between Germany and Belgium.
Allthough the majority of Belgians have Dutch as their first language, both French and Dutch are required subjects in school, so all should be able to speak both.
But what d'ya know?
Going to a city like Liege, only a few kms away from our border, and they all resist to speak Dutch! Now, I don't mind spending a bit of my French (which is minimal) but damn y'all, wouldn't an entrepeneur be inclined to sell anything in a language he learned?
As I've said do not get me started on Frenchspeakers................

Kudo's on you Sandy.

Greetings from the Netherlands, Pascal.

Thank you, Linda. :)

Many Finns do read and write English very well these days; it's usually the first or second foreign language to every Finn. So quite many of us can - language-wise - come here to learn more about ch! :)

I'm not sure it what age kids begin to learn foreign languages now, but back in my junior high days, Swedish begun when I was 9 and English a year later.

But back in dad's youth, things were different. He was taught to speak and write German and Swedish before English, but he was keen to learn it better in his 50s.

Today's young Finns can easily master Finnish, Swedish, and English for sure and many others will also master German, French, Spanish, Russian or Italian once they graduate. And I do know that some schools offer Chinese, Japanese and Latin!

Latin is rather hardly useful as long as you are not going to study medicine or law :p

When I was a kid back 50+ years ago....and into middle school...we were "exposed" but not necessarily taught stuff like Spanish...little bit of French too. In high school, the girls usually took French and boys learned German. Spanish wasn't offered for several years. Of course just to be cantankerous, I took Latin. It was probably useful over the years. Over here, languages were always an elective.

Because of all the Swedes here, every other year they found a teacher to who agreed to teach Swedish.

Thems wuz the daze.

Glad at least you got a laugh out of it Linda - personally, it kinda creeped me out...... but I said it and there's no turning back  ;D.
Coming here is slowly turning me into The Incredible Yankeefying Dutchman.
