Title: And .....they're OFF...and back again..
Post by Redd on Apr 2nd, 2009 at 1:01am
My two children have left out the front door for four days in Atlanta GA ay the Hyatt Regency (sp) to attend the National Keystone Conference. They are with 2 other Keystone members as well as the BGC Advisor.

So why is my stomach all in knots?

Anyone in the area that could PM me phone number in case all un-holy hell breaks loose down there that they could call?

You know...in case of a terroist attack, flood, hurricane, hotel roof colapses?

Yes, I know...Calm down Mom....

I'm sure they'll be fine, Pegg.  I know how you feel, though.

A few years ago, El went on a class trip to Costa Rica for two weeks.  After I put her on the plane, I sat in the parking lot at the airport for a half hour, asking myself what the devil I'd just done.   [smiley=eek.gif]

Best wishes from a paranoid parent,

George

At 9 central time, I was so exhausted I was ready to crash and burn.  Dyl was at his weekly team rally for his job, and I didn't want to go to bed before he got back and Kong was here to pick them up. (The advisor)

Now that they are off and on their way to Milwaukee Airport, I can't even think of sleeping.

Last minute I was getting them threw a check list of things.  So many things they didn't even think to pack.

Dyl's allergy meds, some Ibuprofin, Meg's Midol and other "lady like needs" just in case the stress brings on an early...well..you know teen age girls.

Ok...maybe a BIG glass of wine will get me over this hurdle and I can sleep...maybe.... :-/

Not's is right there Pegg, (As in Not Dave 'cos he's too nice to be a "Dave" LOL) and so is Elaine - have no worries they will be fine.

If it's any consolation I've even panicked about day trips my kids have been on, it's all part and parcel of the parent trap! I'm glad Meg was well enough to go ((HUG))

Pegg,
Dana and Todd were on Swim Team. The last meet of the season was the day the Rodney King riot began. The kids were an hour and a half away, and a riot was going on in their path.  I sat, eyes glued to that TV, watching for signs of my children, almost in tears. They walked thru the door, oblivious to the events, perfectly safe and the riots raged on. They were shocked to see the news, I was so relieved the bus made a detour around the affected area, and they made it back to the school all in one piece.
Somehow, things have a way of working themselves out, have a glass of wine, take a deep breath and remember EGBOK........
Hang tight, Mom!

They called when they landed, both punchy tired from no sleep either on the drive to Milwaukee NOR the plane to GA.

Talk about taking the Red Eye flights.... ::)

Sessions started at 9 AM Eastern time, and I'lm going to guess they are drinking energy drinks like crazy to try and stay awake.

Good thing they are young...I'd be passed out or loopy as a dodo bird by now... :D

Pegg - You'll have to pardon my ignorance, but what is Keystone?

(Really glad they arrived safely. And, there are far worse things than being hopped out of your gourd on Red Bull. :D)

Keystone Clubs are local youth community leadership groups within each local Boy's and Girl's Club facilities.

Dylan happens to be President of the Portage County group, Meg is a member, and is poised to be elected President after Dyl Graduates and has to step down.

All Keystone Clubs gather annualy for the national conference which has 4 days of leadership building sessions, and an awards banquet for outstanding achievements in fund raisings and services offered to the communities the groups serve.

Does this help Brew?

Yes, Pegg, that helps a great deal. Sounds more than worthwhile.

Good for Meg and Dyl.

The world our kids are going to be thrust into has changed dramatically from when we were teens, and in my opinion, anything that gives them a good running start to life as an adult is a worthwhile thing.

So they had a BLAST!

Met a few Celebs.  Mario Lopez was hired as the Ulumnus Physical Fitness Embasador.  (Guess he was a Keystone member back in the day) {can we say HAWT?}

Rev. Jesse Jackson spoke on diversity and leadership.

BowWow, Ashante' (sp) Kim Fore (electric violinist) were there...all former Keystone members.

Comedian Griff was the host for the entire weekend.

Portage Co.. WI and Laguna Beach CA Keystone clubs have sister'd each other and are now great friends.

There were "Strong Women" and "Strong Men" sessions.  Building upon confidence and values that the different genders have in society, yet how they can help to overcome some of the biases.

Fitness sessions daily, and Dyl tried his hand at kick boxing.  He's a bit sore, but said he really enjoyed it.

They both brought home CD recordings after taking their shots at Karaokee.

They have an entire new wardrobe of T-shirts from all the sessions they went to, work out clothes from Russle athletics curtesy of Mario Lopez.  Some damn sweet carry and tote bags sponsored by different national companies.

I tell you I wish I had some of these bags, they are truely sweet and well made.  Not junk.

Thermoses, and other drink carriers.

But the biggest thing they came away from this conference with, besides the new friendships and a ton of things I have no idea where to put it all, is confidence in themselves that they are doing great things in their communities through Keystone, and building great values and leadership skills in themselves in the process.

To see the excitement and joy in their eyes, (even when they are so sleep deprived) was the joy this Mother will never ever forget.

Glad to hear they had such a great time Pegg.

No need to worry so much, even though that's a parents job.

You must be very proud.

All the best. Iddy

I am glad the kids not only learned something, but had fun while doing it!  I am well aware of being a nervous mama.  Sarah's most likely going to head to South Korea before the summer is out~going over there to teach English as a Second Language to Korean kids.  Nervous, me?  Nah (lying out my ass).
