Title: An OXYGEN project for ALL of us
Post by ClusterChuck on Apr 10th, 2009 at 3:34pm
I got a call from our dear Jackie.  She told me that when the guy came to deliver the oxygen, they recognized him as an old friend, whom they had not seen in a while.

Well they got to talking, and you know how Jackie can be, she was blunt and to the point, and complained that his company did not carry regulators that go higher than 15LPM, and seemed to imply that they were not even made!

She also told him what pieces of crap their non-rebreather masks were.  She displayed Blake's O2PTIMASK, and explained its benefits.

She then took him to her laptop, and showed him the information at the oxygen info tab.

The guy was dumbfounded with the information, that he was not aware of.  He was extremely impressed with what Jackie and Blake told him and what they showed him.  He loved the information that is at the oxygen info tab.

Jackie said that he was scribbling notes down, at a mile a minute, to make sure he got all the right information.  He was then going to go back and pass the info on to the company's respiratory therapist.  He was also going to have the head respiratory therapist call Jackie.

Jackie came up with the idea that EACH of us should go to our own supplier and give them the rundown.  Teach THEM what we know about oxygen.  Show THEM the information that we have all gathered.  Let them know how much MORE they can improve their sales, if they got the word out to all their cluster headache customers. (Hit them with how it will improve their bottom line.  That ALWAYS impresses them!)

We keep beating our heads against the wall to get our doctors to listen to us, and too many have that "holier than thou" attitude, and don't REALLY listen to us.  BUT, our oxygen suppliers would, I bet, listen and learn from us.

So, THIS is the project for ALL of us:  Spread the word and information to our suppliers!  Print out the oxygen information, and drop it off to them.

I am sitting here, kicking myself, that I had never thought to use this approach!

Chuck

I already did my homework and handed it in, in January.

VERY good, Mel, but unfortunately, I can only give you a B on that.  If you are REAL nice, I might think about making it a B+.

The reason it is only a B is because you only went to ONE supplier, and you did not talk to the respiratory therapist.

Better luck next time.

Chuck

Chuck, I went to Walgreen's Medical, which is my O2 supplier (you did not specify seeing others) and spoke directly with the Respiratory Therapist there.  Am I missing something here??  I want a new teacher!!! :P

You go, girl!

Some teachers, I swear. They always have to appear smarter than their students - instead of recognizing brilliance when they're in the presence of it.

I am on very friendly terms with the manager of Apria here where I get my 02 re-filled.   Think I'll pay her a visit on Monday.

It works, too.  I once had an oxygen guy tell me that the doc had prescribed the wrong stuff (cannoli at 2-3LPM).  I found a new doctor.

I have been doing this actively since I became a high flow convert. I got a new Neuro recently - he got my standard 15 minute lecture and actually took notes when I said 25 lpm.

I have many, many encounters, but just last week I was in our local medical supply place here in town needing a new barbed connector for my regulator.

The lady behind the counter said that she didn't recognize me and asked how she could get my O2 business. I told her I was using welding O2 for Clusters expecting a look of confusion.

Instead I got "Have you tried 15 lpm?" - I chuckled and said that 25 or higher worked much better. She asked if I had time to talk because she wanted me tell her crew more about it. The first comment I got was "There are no regulators that go that high" so I had spend time busting that whole myth too.

I brought in MY tank and mask and made them realize that 25 lpm ain't a whole lot of flow if you're hurt'n. They ALL ASSUMED that 25 lpm was way too much to breathe until they really understood a tight mask.

I'm just waiting for the new study that Pete has alluded to. Then I will have something more concrete to point to (and reprint the shit out of)

We have 11 Pharmacies. 5 of them handle 02 and 4 Home Medical Supplies that handle 02 as well.

This town has more Banks and Pharmacies than a town twice this size. Must be a lot of money to be made in both. Of course, we don't have much else. :)

Thanks for spreading the word in one of the RIGHT places!

I'm glad you found a new doctor too Jon.   Italian pasta does nothing for CH.
