Title: Question........and an UPDATE!
Post by Cathi_Pierce on May 10th, 2009 at 11:00pm
So, last night, my adult son Todd told me he had a rash-similar to a wetsuit rash all over the trunk of his body. Miserable, itchy nasty thing. This morning, he took his sorry behind to the ER, because it had not lightened up a bit..... this was far more than a need for some Benadryl......Know what the Dr came up with? RUBELLA! Remember when the kids were young, and they were innoculated for MMR? Todd was, and I've never heard of a booster trivalent.........soo, if he had the series as a kid, why now, at 33 does he have Rubella??
The actual pustules broke out this afternoon, early. The Dr says to take the week off work.....can't help but wonder if she could make the pymt on her Beemer if SHE took a week off work....but that's neither here nor there.........
(deep sigh) anyw3hooo......just was hoping for any input. this sucks for Todd! (but it'll pass)
Thanks for listening!

Wow, cathi, I haven't had any  experience in an adult child having this outbreak.    I looked it up and this was all I could find:

Sorry to hear about your son, Rubella is a miserable illness. As for the MMR, my daughter had that when she was 18 months old and then had the booster at 5, she then proceded to come down with Measels at the age of 8. In short my GP said that there is still a 20% chance that children and adults can get these illnesses even with the vacination. Hope thats helps a bit.

Thanks, Linda, that's basically what I got, too. He's on anti-inflammatory, antibiotic and something else which escapes me, and as of this morning, he is finally sleeping. He googled yesterday and found that German Measles-part of this triple threat COULD affect his ability to produce children. He is simply FURIOUS....but, whatcha gonna do?

Becky, I feel somewhat better knowing there are others who have been innoculated, or been though measles-I mean, I am so sorry your daughter did it twice, but, at the very least, I don't have to question Todd's childhood innoculations, I guess.

How to avoid this? Don't touch the open pustules of someone with Rubella. Our house is pretty much quarantined right now, and Todd MOST especially cannot be near his son for now........
sheesh!
If it's not ONE thing, Roseann-Roseannadanna, it's another........

Does he have German measles or rubeola/measles?

Cathi,
I looked everywhere and could not find where measles affects reproductivity in adults.  Mumps can affect men, but that is primarily because it is a glandular disease (and can affect the testes).

Delta,
Per Todd , it is Rubella, and it is glandular. I've decided 2 things....
-I'm not gonna over think it.......
-I'm not giving him any hugs........

Thanks, all!

Well, give him a hug for me -- I've had them (we didn't get shots for everything when I was a kid - we just had everything and got it over with by the first grade :) )

Hope he's better soon.

Hugs BD :-*

Barb, Oddly, though the Trivalent became mainstream in about 1969, and Todd had it as well as the boosters, about 3% can get reinfected somehow. When it is in one's adult years it is MUCH worse!
I have never seen Todd that ill........he described the pain on his skin like bacon sizzling. I LITERALLY watched him as his skin went from normal fleshtones to beet red, with pustules all over..now3, after 3 days, it is draining off just as it arrived.......his face is now normal fleshtones, and his neck is going back to normal.....it's moving back DOWN his body as it flushed UP his body 3 days ago.
Anywhoo, I thank you for listening, sending vibes and such ,and Linda, for looking it up, like I had.......more heads are always better than one!
BTW-Simply because of mixed messages and no concrete anwers, I have remained pretty much quarantined as well. Not something I am good it.....but since the rash is drying up.......I"M OUTTAHERE!!

Again, my thanks.and BEWARE THE PUSTULE!!!

If I remember correctly I was advised to have a booster back in the late 80's.   I believe  they were discovering that the MMR's given to children in the 70's were not protecting people.  It was highly recommended that women of child bearing age receive a booster to prevent complications should she contract Rubella during pregnancy.  It can cause deafness and blindness in unborn children.   When I worked at Missouri School f/t Blind there was a classroom full of " Rubella Babies."

I hope Todd is feeling better soon.  I had Chicken Pox as an adult.  If Measles are anything like that ..... YUK!    He has my sympathies!

had the measles, both types as a kid, and had the Rubella form twice.  not supposed to be able to do that.  Quite rare.  Maybe that is why I got CH too.

The reason Rubella can affect reproduction is the fever that often accompanies it.  I know I was at 105 degrees (F) a couple of times with it, and it didn't affect me!  I'm perfectly normal, NOT!   ;D
