Title: Tomatoes!!!!
Post by BarbaraD on May 15th, 2009 at 2:00pm
I've got TOMATOES!!!! Yep, this morning we have tomatoes on our topsy turvy vines. A BUNCH of them... Looks like in a week or so we're gonna be EATING tomatoes!!!! Wow that was fast (of course I've been talking to them real sternly every day... :) and explaining what's "expected" of them.

But I guess those topsy turvy things DO work. IT's only been a month or so since we planted them and we've already got tomatoes. I'm just so excited!!! (course at my age it doesn't take much to excite me!)

I'm so jealous!!!!!

I don't even try to have tomatoes any more.   I got tired of feeding the squirrels.   They would take one bite and then leave the darn things on the ground!

I have to get my home grown tomatoes from the Farmer's Market.

Enjoy!

Jeannie

ETA:  What kind of tomatoes are they?  Beef Eater, Big  Boy?  Can you buy different varieties in the Topsy Turvy plants?

Jeannie,

Go to a Barber Shop or a Beauty Salon and get a bag of hair.  Sprinkle it around your plants periodically and you should have no probs.

"Topsy Turvy" is a method for growing. It means they grow upside down, with the root ball and soil in a bucket above the vines. You hang the whole thing, keeping the fruit from touching the ground.

I see,  So you can grow any type of tomato that way.

I buzz cut my son's hair every couple of weeks.  I should have been saving it, huh?

At harvest time, I would recommend an Upsidedown Tomato Sandwich.

Toast, mayo, pepper and thin sliced tomatos. Don't forget to smash it a little. And, when you are about to take the first bite, turn it over.

Let us know how it goes.

Jeanie - we planted Beef Eaters - the big juicy ones... I can already taste them.  They just grow out the bottom of the hanging pot. You can hang the pot anywhere.

And Steve LMAO - now that's funny.  I think I'll put it in my next cookbook - Topsy Turvy Tomato Sandwich -  :)

Does anyone ever simply stand over the sink with a huge, vine-ripened tomato in one hand, salt shaker in the other, and sleeves rolled up so as to allow the juice to drip off the elbow?

That's my most favoritst way.

Throw in a cold beer and that'll be my "last meal" request. ;D

Well, yeah, but it's a LONG walk back inside...vine ripened, sun warmed, rub the dust and bird poop off on your shirt...salt shaker in hand right in the garden....oh my....
