Boggles the mind!
However it is not the least bit surprising once the technology of baby making became part of the scientific norm. Sad. :( Iddy |

Shoot!
I was 37 when my last munchkin came into being, and I thought THAT was too old ... But, who am I to say ... I just wonder how an 82 year old woman will be able to deal with a 16 year old hellion? And there is a hell of a good chance she will never live to see, gloat and spoil her grandchildren. THAT is called payback time for ALL parents! To each, their own, I guess ... <shaking my head> Chuck |

What really gets me is the man ( doctor?) who said "We don't tell a 14 y/o unmarried woman not to have a baby so why should we tell a 66 y/o healthy woman not to. Who's to say?"
Would a doctor "help" a 14 y/o get pregnant? I don't think so. I lost my mom when I was 32.... My dad five months later. It was really hard. I agree with you, Mel. Very selfish. |

I guess my main question would be, "why wait until now?".
I know someone who did not have her last child until she was older (not that old, but older) and her daughter was so embarrassed because her mama was the oldest one there (she looked even older than her age). If you are so busy with your career that you cannot stop long enough to have a child, then you really need to think twice about having one at an advanced age. |

You made an excellent point Jeannie. What he said about we (society) not telling a 14 y/o girl to get pregnant doesn't make sense. Is he saying that society tells 14 y/o unmarried girls that it is ok to get pregnant?

You know, now that I think about it, I'll bet there is at least ONE doctor out there somewhere, who would perform IVF on a 14 y/o if she had the means to pay for it.

I understand everyone's points, but really it is her choice.
I do not know all the facts - such as does she have a support system in place? Is she in really good heath? All of us could go at any time, there is no guarantee at any age that you will be around to finish rasing your kids or see your grand kids. Who are we to judge? |
Title: Re: Pregnant at 66 Post by Melissa on May 18th, 2009 at 3:53pm
I am not saying what someone can or can't do, I'm just saying that in my opinion, this lady is being selfish. Am I judging her? Hell yes I am! I'm judging her based on my own reaction to such a situation. I just don't understand it! If it were me, I wouldn't want to put my kid through losing his/her mother at 10 years of age should I die at the average lifespan of 76 years old. I don't think that's fair to him/her. :(

IF she lives to see this child graduate from High School....she'll be going there in a walker. Embarrasing....you bet. Selfish...yup. Dr. being irresponsible oh, hell yes!!!!! Can any of you other Mom's see how hard this will be chasing a toddler around and keeping him/her safe when you're in your 70's ???????? it was hard enough when I was in my 20's

I lost my mama when I was 18 and even today, 33 years later, it still hurts. At least I did have a Grandmother around (daddy was useless) and other family. What is this kid going to have? *Mum* (for lack of a better word in referring to this woman) had a choice years ago and didn't take it. Now the kid is going to pay for her selfishness.

One thing I DO know - making babies isn't one of those things people put on their lists of "things that keep you young."

I'm probably opening a can of worms but..... if nature had intended for women to give birth in their 60's we would not need the help of science to achieve it.
Not all that long ago, it was not uncommon for young women in their teens to start families. In fact, at one time, it was the norm. While I am NOT advocating teen pregnancy, it is more natural than a 66 y/o woman giving birth. I just feel that it's unfair to the child to wait so long. Jeannie |

I work with a women who married for the first time when she was 45. From the very beginning, they tried to get pregnant. She just delivered a beautiful little girl a few months ago, 8 years later at 53 yrs old. They went to every specialist and have had 2 miscarriages. There is no way she would have conceived with out medical intervention. The pregnancy was high risk and she spent the end in bed. I look at the love and desire those parents have for this little baby girl but wonder what the future will bring. For now though, it seems so right....

I think its wrong.
I think medicine interfering to make someone who otherwise couldn't have a baby due to age is a misuse of medicine. Nature will allow a woman of 45 to fall pregnant naturally, I'd be horrified if I fell pregnant at 45 but at least that is possible physically. Giving birth in your sixites is not possible. I am 100% in favour of IVF for people who can't have kids but for goodness sake - with some discretion! I have a problem with a 60+ woman having a baby just as much as I would with a crack addict of 25 being given IVF. This is right up there with making men pregnant. It's playing God, its messing with nature and it's going to bite back. This 66 year old woman isn't the first to have a baby in her 60's down to unscrupulous doctors wanting megabucks and the chance to play Frankenstein |

Dumbth.
You have to wonder if something like this relates to some kind of "fashion" about having babies at that age. Not good, if so. Charlie |

EXACTLY. Not to mention someone wanting their 5 mins. of fame just like Octomom. California taxpayers are going to be paying for that 5 mins. of fame for a long long time. Those (8) poor children don't have a chance..they will be hounded by media as they grow up.... over and over again just as this womans child will be. I'm sure Mom never thought of that right? >:( |

I'm 27 now and having a totally miserable time. I consider myself fit and healthy but I am barely managing to cope now, never mind in 40 years time!

Aww Em (((HUG))) you have my sympathy. I had horrific morning sickness with Brid. I had to be hospitalised with it. I still can't bear chocolate 15-16 years later because the smell of anyone eating it near me made me so ill! The good news is - it IS worth it! It is just so worth it and this from the woman who was pregnant again within two months of giving birth!

66? Then, at 29, I have nothing to worry about because time is not right for kids yet. I have plenty of years ahead of me in that case! ;) Just kidding.
Seriously, my mother will turn 65 next Wednesday. I can't imagine that she would want another baby at her age! I was born when she was 35, and that was considered "late" to many of our relatives; in fact, dad's sister-in-law mentioned that they were sure that my parents would never have kids! ::) I do understand that some people do want kids when they're older, but at over 60... It sounds bit mad to me. Doctors can do a lot, but is it truly wise to push the body's biological clock that much? Sure, she can get pregnant, but will she have the energy to take care of the baby and play with the child when s/he is older? Was that even considered...? A decision like that should never be made without thinking about the future - that baby's future as well. My friend's sister-in-law was 43 when her and her husband quit trying for a baby. They thought that they were too old and opted for adoption instead of IVF. Now they have a cute adopted toddler from Africa and no regrets. :) Sanna |
