Title: Me vs. Chainsaw (WARNING, pics, but not too bad)
Post by Mrs Deej on May 22nd, 2009 at 12:01pm
So, yesterday my leg had a VERY close call with a chainsaw, however I became another chainsaw statistic! LOL  My dad and I were working outside yesterday, burning pine tree libs, brush and cutting down pampus grass.  We were ALMOST done when the accident happened.

He moved one way and I moved another...LUCKILY (thank you Jesus) he had taken his finger OFF the trigger and just barely nicked me.  My dad and I don't dance well together with a chainsaw...LOL  It got the inside of my left shin.  The cut was about 6 centimeters long and gashed pretty good, requiring 10 stitches (5 double stitches).

Needless to say, my dad feels pretty bad!! LMAO!!

Sitting in the ER waiting for the needle and thread...

I was MORE than lucky, I think.  Had to have had a guardian angel on my shoulder yesterday!!!   :)

Oh dear - Steph I'm so glad you are ok.

You're right - it could have been much much worse.  I'll bet your dad feels just terrible.

Gardening is not for the faint of heart!

Can't wait to see the well-healed scar this summer.  Be safe!

WOW...! Lucky girl, you are fortunate your dad took his finger of the trigger. At least you have an old war wound to show the grand children about the day you did battle with the evil pampas grass... :)

You mean you've come out from the last time you went to hide?

Some of us might actually find a woman using manly equipment just a little on the hot side. ;)

Hi I have to use a chainsaw to cut firewood once in a while and Never Ever do it when my boyfriend is at home! He has a nasty habit of sneaking up on me.

I think you are very lucky and maybe it might possibly be a good idea to consider the special pants that you can wear around those dangerous things.

Nice legs.... what is your workout routine because I am jealous?

well steph at least you got the balls to run a chainsaw. the hardest thing i've found about getting stitches on a cut like that is when they clean it out with iodine and a swab before they sew it up. your a pretty tough mama 8-)

Yeeeowwwch!  That had to hurt big time.

Got to see the inside layers of my calf about 20 years ago.  My dog, Freeway was tied outside on his rope, ran around me, wrapped the rope around my leg and took off running.  Knocked me on my butt and when I tried to stand up, I realized that I had a rope embedded in my calf.

It was a surreal moment because for about a minute, it didn't hurt.  Kept standing there thinking, "If I can see the bone in my leg and all of the layers of skin and subcutaneous tissue, fat, etc., why isn't this hurting?"

The pain finally set in and it hurt like hell.  I was rolling around in the back yard screaming while Freeway, who thought I wanted to play, was jumping all over me.

Take it easy, Steph.  Sucks gimping around on one leg but ya gotta give the sutures time to heal.

Hope you feel better soon.

I'm glad you're ok, Steph!

That is a great warning to me and mom; when we will use our chainsaw this summer, we must be careful (especially, because the nearest hospital is far away!). A huge tree had fell down right next to our summer cottage and with no men around... one of us will have to cut that tree into pieces. Hmmm... then again, I have plenty of cousins. Maybe I'll bribe one of them... ;)

Sanna, if you or your Mom do not have experience with a chain saw, then PLEASE DO NOT USE ONE!!!!!! Steph got off lucky, as I know some people who are missing limbs and such from being inexperienced with one of these saws. You are only wrong once with this type of machine.
Just concerned for you, that's all. ;)

Barry,

thanks for the warning and your concern. :) We both have used chainsaw over the years on several occasions, mom more than me; after all, she was born and raised at a farm in Middle Finland. And I was raised with the idea that girls can do whatever they need to do... so I was using a hammer at 3.  ;)

Believe me, I'm enough of a scaredy cat to stay away from anything I don't know how to use properly! But still, it's good to remind oneself every now and then to be extra careful. I kinda like my hands and legs and plan to keep them. ;)
