I was wondering if anyone else has problems with paint? I was episodic for 10 yrs, slept in a room that had just been painted and that was it! I have been chronic ever since (6 yrs) Any kind of wood stain does it also. It took 3 wks after each episode to be able to function (meds wouldn't work). I dont know much about paint, whether its the VOC's in paint or what, but we are about to have our house painted and I'm terrified! I can only stay away so long. No one in this world should have headaches, and my heart goes out to everyone that has to live the pain.

I'm lucky in that odors aren't a trigger for me. But a LOT of people on the board say while on cycle any petroleum based fumes, paints, even strong perfumes can light them off.

I'd stay out of the painted rooms until they're WAY dry. For those that find it's a trigger, it doesn't take much. Do you have a decent regiemn for dealing with the beast?

Yes, as a class of products, solvents are often triggers for an attack when one is in an active cycle. I was amazed at the instant attack I had some years ago when spraying a white board in my office with cleaner.

It appears to not be a 100% experience for us--i.e., CH always presents new surprises!

I work in an automotive parts store and deal with a lot of nasty fumes, anything from automotive paint in which we mix, hydraulic oils, carbs leaking fuel ect. Some of these have caused me to leave the shop and go outside for a walk around the building before it turned into a full blown hit.

Then there is the little hemroid (no other way to describe this piece of work) who grabs a broom and fills our showroom full of dust, almost like he does it on purpose ::), but either way it is another trip around the outside of the building. We CH's sure do get our exercise. :)

paint can be a major trigger for me also.  Not sure what it is in it that does so, but primarily spray paint or shellacs will trigger me instantly.  Not sure that I could say it is what caused you to go chronic though.  My personal feel is that it is coincidental.  Usually a trigger won't continue to affect you after the agent is gone.

Wow. I grew up around and worked in our auto parts store where I just about lived with all kinds of godawful stuff, paint, solvents, cleaners.... including tanks of stuff in the machine shop that we used to clean engines. Made your eyes water during coffee break which we dumbly held there. (what a different world we live in today!) Anyway, my CH didn't begin until 4 years after I left town. I can't think of a thing that I got into in Utica, NY.  I wasn't around much of anything nasty there but that's where they began in 1969. (fortunately they ended 23 years later. So far so good.

I know that I'm almost a cult of one when I say that I know of no trigger, including alcohol other than Jonny.

Just thought I'd put in my two cents.

yeah things are allot different now charlie. i worked in a machine shop when i got out of high school. one of the machines i ran was the hot tank. zep made an alkaline powder that i would add to the water in the tank. after you ran some parts in it for a while you'd open the big steel door and a big poof steam would belch up toward the ceiling. that was one filthy job.
